I'm after a bog-standard chess set. I'm thinking one with the plastic weighted pieces and green/yellow vinyl rollup board, FIDE standard size (I think that's 3.75inch king, 55cm square board, or am I wrong?).

I'm in Brisbane. Anyone know a place that sells them in Brissy? Only shop I've found is the one in the Myer Centre in the city - mostly expensive sets in there, and the cheap ones are wrong size I think.

Or am I gonna have to get one online (http://www.thechessstore.com/category/00030-tournament-chess-set-kits.00012-value-club-tournament-chess-set-kits/) - I would prefer to just buy one straight from somewhere in Brisbane though.

You could also buy one online fom Australian Chess Enterprises (ACE) in Riverstone, western Sydney.

www.giantchess.com.au has them pretty cheap and only $5 postage.

Sorry Michael, but I think this was a "cheapo".

Thing is, if I'm gonna buy online I might aswell get the best from...The House of Staunton!

The problem I have with ACE is the lack of pictures and info on their products.

Closest place to Brisbane I've found, where I can buy a standard tournament set in the flesh, is the Gardiner Chess Club down on the Goldcoast: http://www.gardinerchess.com/products/tournamentset.html - a chess club for juniors.

The Brisbane Chess Club has some spare second-hand sets, as we just bought a large number of new pieces. We also have some very second-hand roll-up boards.

We could probably sell you a set and roll-up board for about $20. The address is 67 Ipswich Rd, and we meet on Thursday nights from 7pm, or you could drop in to the Brisbane Open next weekend.

Thx very much Patrick. I might drop in and grab one (or two), or just to have a look (I'm still trawling the net for something suitable, but most likely it'll end up being too much of a hassle).

My current picks:
House of Staunton, Zurich Series, Plastic

The Chess House ProTourney Set, Plastic

The problem I have with ACE is the lack of pictures and info on their products.

You can order ACE products at www.chessaustralia.com.au

The main products have pictures but the less popular products don't have pictures.

ACE prices will be reduced significantly over the coming months due to good management! Look out for bargains!
