Kaitlin

Disscussion is allowed now and I will either get posts deleted form here or make a new threat once we get started.

So far I have decided..

1. you can challenge the person 1 place above you
2. the loser drops 3 places
3. if the person above you declines your challenge 3 times in a period yet to be decided they drop 1 place

Actually .. it was 4 years in the conception stage......(I was holding out for governemnt funding)...
... but we have progressed to level 2 of development now... :D

Ok this is what Ive thought of (just this second) but its looking good -> Its going to be a KnockOut tourney ladder... and if you lose a game .. you go to the bottom of the ladder... its not going to be like heaps of games just scheduled games but you have heaps of time to play them in .. and long games (or short ones if the players want that)... but if you lose, you get knocked off the ladder and fall all the way to the bottom.. splat, but you can rejoin at the bottom of the list :)

Aw Nice :0)

Looks like Kaitlins has got the right idea now- for a ladder tourney would be very nice.

Have played alout of other games in the ladder style onlines. Would be great to set up a online Chess Ladder Tourney here at Chesschats.

Looks like all that time didnt go to waste Kaitlins. keep up the good work. <"-">

Chess Ladder - Rules as @ 17th Feburary 2009

Here are the General Rules:

1. You can only challenge the person directly above you in the ladder.
2. You have 1 month from the time a challenge is issued to you to play your game.
3. The loser of the game drops to the bottom of the ladder.
4. You can choose not to play the game especially if you unavailable in which case after the 1 month period you will just drop down one position and the challenger will move above you.
5. If a player drops to the bottom of the ladder all thier challenges become void
6. Challenges should be posted in this thread and corresponding result.

nb: The Games are not played in the thread like in a corro tourney, they can be played anywhere - FICs, Playchess, ICC, OTB or in corro games in Chesschat but not in this thread

Here are the start up Rules:

1. If you want to be added to the ladder PM me your name and mention Chess Ladder
2. Mostly players will be added to the bottom of the ladder in order of application, but if a good player joins they will be insert at the bottom of thier prospective rungs.

Kaitlin, will you have a mattress or trampoline at the bottom of the ladder. Some of us are very weighty you know. Are we insured? We all can't be at the bottom of the ladder - are some lower than others? Should I bring a crash helmut?

Now to stay relevant when will it begin?

Kaitlin
17-02-2009, 07:15 PM
Its starting now... actually it started in September 2004 but there was teething problems... but its a happening thiing now ..

Kaitlin

Dont get the idea that this is a fast thing... its not even a tourney per say. You have a month to play any challenges you recieve and even then if you dont have time to play that challenge you only drop one place.

Its not a all games happening at once tourney.. its a climbing to the top of the ladder tourney.. and seeing who can stay there the longest :D

Kaitlin
28-02-2009, 02:16 PM
So am I suppose to challenge james?

You can challenge the person above you anytime you like... but post it here or PM me so we have a record.

This Ladder is so well worked out (and still being developed) that is has nothing to offer cheats so it isnt like it has to be arbitrated all that much... when challenges are offer for the top ladder rungs Im sure they will have people that would like to watch that match or be very interested in the result, and anyone rising too quickly up the rungs will surely attract attention and have people interested in their games.

 ..this ladder was years in development.. fair enough it is just in its testing phase now.. but believe me - you do not have a better grasp on its conceptual and logistical aspects than its developer :D

..a swaping of rungs would just lead to the loser automaticaly re-challening and the person having to play them over and over and over and over and over ........

Note that AC is now suspended for two weeks. However as he has a month to play his challenge, and challenge was issued on the 11th April, he should still be able to attempt to defend his position on the ladder after his ban expires on the 26th.

Kaitlin, re one move a day, it may be a move every two days, giving each person one day for their move. Otherwise they only get half a day (theoretically). I read my opponents move today and I have until tomorrow arvo to reply. Is that the correct interpretation? Ask around maybe, thanks

Otherwise, I have to stay internet cafe until worked out my move, inconvenient and can be expensive

Chess Ladder - Rules as @ 30th April 2009

Here are the General Rules:

1. You can only challenge the person on the rung directly above you in the ladder.
2. You have 1 month from the time a challenge is issued to you to start and keep playing your game.
3. You may if you wish play two games at once but if you dont challenges must be accepted in order of being issued and the second challenge will be labeled 'pending' in the current challengs list. (nb rule 6)
4. The loser of the game drops to the bottom of the ladder.
5. You can choose not to play the game especially if you unavailable in which case after the 1 month period you will just drop down one position and the challenger will move above you.
6. If a player drops to the bottom of the ladder any other current challenge/game they have becomes void
7. Challenges should be posted in this thread and corresponding result.
8. The higher rung has choice of colour in any challenge

nb: The Games are not played in this thread like in a corro tourney, they can be played anywhere - FICs, Playchess, ICC, OTB or in corro games in Chesschat or anywhere but not in this thread

Here are the start up Rules:

1. If you want to be added to the ladder PM me your name and mention Chess Ladder
2. Players will be added to the bottom of the ladder in order of application

its not instant chess... you have a month to start your game but if your like on holidays and cant allowances are made for that.. but once you do start you should keep playing .. unless you like tell us you cant for a good reason.. so time limit at this stage is a bit grey area :)

Of course Kaitlin is a fair and reasonable person and would not ban the Top of the Ladder player over a minor barring infringement. Listen mate I am putting up a big fight to stay top of the castle, and I reakon I am ahead. Even I have never won against this opening again. Actually the only game I lost when winning the Ukrainian Chess Club championship was against this opening. The devil is in the detail in this game, no big plans.

OK thanks. I don't know if DeMann got the full 'Your BBQ is ready' treatment. I'll endeavour to catch him next time I see him. He may have struggled with what was going on to a similar degree that michaelrichards is presently struggling.

He has tried to play via PM, this thread and the shoutbox - completely missing the idea of a specific thread - and that's despite a return PM with explanations and a link to the actual game thread below his move :wall:

I'd like to wait until DeMann is back on board and is given a proper chance to play.

It's an interesting rule that one. Thinking about the game theory of it, unless a player is very confident of winning it makes sense for them to refuse the challenge and drop a place rather than risk dropping to the bottom in order to try to hold their present place. But people will tend to accept challenges for the fun of it even if the likely result is losing and sinking like a stone, which reminds me a bit of the Keynesian theory of "animal spirit".

I suppose if Gunner is taking over the administration then participants should say if they have strong views either way on whether Gunner should revise the rules if he feels inclined to do so.

Why are we dropping down all the way to the bottom of the ladder if we lose once? I think it would be better if we dropped down two places for a loss (so we can't challenge the person that just played us and keep swapping places, but still don't have to work up the ladder so slowly again...)

Basil

Well done school. I congratulate them for blocking chesschat.

I think you should find out what the actual purpose of the block was and whether it was even intentional before forming such an opinion.

Of course, all schools should block chesschat because it is a thoroughly interesting and excellent site and if they do not block it students will waste far too much time here when they should be working at school and browsing chesschat at home. Worse still they may even learn things here and that would be unconscionable. Alexa stats show that the average visitor to chesschat stays here for 41 minutes while the average Toolbox visitor stays for 66 seconds.

Berulf is a registered member but does not show on the members list because Berulf has a postcount of zero and the members list only shows posters with a postcount of at least one.

kjenhager, was, is and forever will be axiom - which is an online construct - a self-replicating rogue escapee from one of Microsoft's labs (closed down in the late 90s), obsessed with conspiracy theories, yet lacking in sufficient self-awareness to realise that these yearnings are supressed ghosts of his own origins.

His creators have been in touch with the authorities on this board and it has been decided not to tell it what is going on.

Yes, regardless of the extent of the drop of Alana, AzureBlue is and will be your next port of call.

I've applied the same standard to Trent as to Alana (adding high weight to the many rules appearing well after the ladder's inception). As losing challenger he drops a place, but not all the way to the bottom of the pit.

With the 'dropping to the bottom of the pit for absconders' rule now well ensconced and publicly considered twice, that rule is now well and truly in play.

I'd like to join the ladder.
Boris positioned into the ladder on 'the vibe of the thing' rule.

I have been advised by Kaitlin that AzureBlure "wants out" of the ladder. michaelrichards suspicion was correct (although baseless at the tie it was made!).

This adds weight to the idea that proportionately, juniors on this board are bordering on the pathetic for seeing their correspondence games through to the end.

Alexrules01 lost his challenge match and therefore drops one place ("losing challenge rule") but this has not been recorded on the ladder (Duggan can do what he likes: "the vibe of the thing rule"). The reason is because there is a Boris challenge on michaelrichards (which is yet to be accepted) both of whom who are directly below Alexrules01 (which means AR01 would drop between two people engaged in a game).

I may or may not change this ruling, depending on "stuff" and "vibe" in the coming days.

Michael hasn't logged in since the 6th Sept, although he could have lurked. I PMd him on the 8th regarding your challenge and of course he wouldn't have received that either.

Special permission granted to challenge AlexRules01 if desired (partly because of your recent arbitrary ladder insertion). We'll keep the michaelrichards challenge open until one game or t'other is under way.

• Boris beats AlexRules01. Those players switch positions.
• michaelrichards neither responded to the challenge nor my PM. He has since logged on a number of times. He drops (courtesy of a very complex algorithm) to below AlexRules (interested parties may refer previous discussion on this point or ask me for amplification).
• Kaitlin is again active.
• As Trent Parker has not been heard from for some time and failed to respond to a challenge, I have marked him as unavailable.

Exactly Kaitlin, actually No 2 won't challenge me so I am stuck here bored like at a dance with no partner. But I always had gals coz I had the gift of the gab.

By the time I get a serious game I will be stale and maybe even on my deathbed.
