IMs & GMs free entry.

There is a very good chance that we (myself and my son) will be playing in this event (that will be my first official free entry:))

Could somebody possibly suggest some good accomodation, somewhere close to the coast? We (a family of four) are thinking about coming for a week or so to have holidays. Thank you very much in advance.

It would be good to have you and your son. Having you would have made it more difficult for our last two winners of our open events. They were Stephen Solomon (2011 Powell Open) & Gene Nakauchi (2010 Suncoast Open) and both won without losing or drawing.

I have not had a chance to scope out the best deals in the area. For our other open event we I did but that is at the other end of the coast. My best advise is have a look on-line and call a couple. Areas to consider are Caloundra (5km to 9km - link below) and Mooloolaba(12km). If I get time (I hope to get some next week) I'll ring a few and try and get a good deal for players in our event.

I would highly recommend Pacific View in Caloundra, realitivily cheap, 5-10 minute walk to kings beach, 15-20 to the town centre. And the place is very nice with everything you could probably want.

Thanks a lot, this accomodation looks quite good!

I would highly appreciate if somebody could answer a couple of my questions. How far is this place from the great barrier reef? Could you possibly suggest good tours? Thanks a lot.

Attractions:
We are close to Australia Zoo (Steve Erwin). Popular tourist spots include underwater world, the ginger factory, the Eumundi markets, Kondalilla falls, Noosa River wetlands, the hinterland (Maleny, Montville), Kenilworth and its cheese factory. Fraser Island & Rainbow Beach is a nice place to have a tour but a little further North.

The Great Barrier Reef is about 6 hours drive North. As a result we have some great surf beaches.

Accommodation options:
Also to be considered for the length you are considering is holiday apartments, they are cheaper than hotels and can be quiet good, I have relatives who do this regularly.

Pacific View is our home time share place, believe it or not:) . It means we can have a free week there every year, although we usually swap it for places like Queenstown! Anyway we could arrange extra weeks there for about $200 probably and they sleep 4 in beds and at least 2 more on fold outs and lounges. It is a great place and includes a beautiful pool.

I will be playing but will advise whether Anthony or Rachael can play a little later.

I am thinking of playing if anyone is able to tell me the nearest airport and if there would be anyone to billet me at all?

G'day Lost,

The nearest airport is the Sunshine Coast(Maroochydore) Airport. Both jetstar and virgin fly out of Melbourne direct to this airport. There is a bus service from the Sunshine Coast Airport that goes both North and South.

You could talk to JaK about his experience getting around on buses as he flew up for the Bill Powell Open in February.

If you are considering Brisbane airport because of the cheaper flights it will be harder to organise transport to the Coast, there are airport transfer services and a train that you can use. Or you may be able to organise someone travelling up from Brisbane, we have quiet a few coming up but I'm unsure of what times or days. You can continue to ask here and I will also circulate your requests to our membership.

Brisbane airport to pacific lutheran college - 93km
Maroochy airport to pacific lutheran college - 24km

As for billeting I will see if there are any volunteers in the club(I can't volunteer yet as I would need to check with my wife first as we have a new baby in the house). Other wise you may be able to organise something with some of the other entrants travelling here and share apartment/hotel costs (Vlad/Solo). Also they would have plenty of great chess advice.

Cheers,
Jeff

Hi Jeff
I really enjoyed playing at Caloundra! It was great to see such a strong tournament. Schmaltz showed his class and Brodie can say he has drawn with a grandmaster in Tournament Chess.
I only wish I didn't feature on the wrong side of Paul Summer's upset Mars Bars Awards - they are a great feature of your
Tournaments!

Let's hope you and anyone near Brisbane makes it to the CAQ AGM on Saturday Dec 3 at 12:30 pm at KENMORE LIBRARY. It is to be held in the Meeting Room of the library which is in the
KENMORE VILLAGE SHOPPING CENTRE.
Don't forget the Team Chess Comp at 10am at St Joseph's Primary School 30 Eldorado Street Bracken Ridge on Saturday Dec 10 and the Qld Blitz Champs at about 4 pm!

Cheers Mark C Stokes

Thanks Mark, and thanks again for picking up "Lost" from the airport, and driving others around. Schmaltz definatly showed his class defeating two IMs, a FM and one of our past club champions(this included our two previous open winners). I would also like to thank the Pypers for picking up Ali from the Caloundra bus station on Saturday, with out their help he would not have made it to win 4 of the 5 games he played.

I would like to thank the organisers of the event for putting on a great tournament and would like to thank a few people.

I would like to thank Jeff Dyer for his fantastic hospitality and showing me around the coast. Also for running a good tournament in the role of arbiter as well.

I would like to thank Mark Stokes for picking me up from the airport and dropping me off as well. Good drive down and back as well as entertaining.

If there is anyone that I have missed I am sorry. Well done to all prize winners and I would recommend people going the coast for a hliday and play some chess.

Hehe Juniors had a ball everytime they were drawn against me last year. I think they enjoyed three out of three marsies or something! :) Good on them! But I am coming there prepared next time!

On the other hand, it was lovely to see so many players (it must be some kind of a record) participating and enjoying this great event!

I do, however, believe that a word of encouragement before, or a congratulatory message after the end of the event from CAQ would have been a rather nice gesture! It wasn't to be ... Well, c'est la vie I presume!

If such a message was sent privately, please accept my apologies!

And good news. We will again hold a tournament at the Coolum-Peregian RSL. It is the Bill Powell Open on the 18th/19th of February. Stay tuned for a new chesschat thread. I'll put one up as soon as I have finalised the entry form.

Thanks JaK, it was a record for an event where I was the principle organiser, but not for the club we have had them over 100 before. We are currently in a rebuilding phase and hope to have further gains on the event just held.

This is very sad for me because I enjoyed having participate in our event. Remind me to check with you next time before I set the dates. If you pay an entry fee I will put you down as a sponser/supporter of the event and give you half price entry in to the next one you can enter.

Hi Jeff
At the CAQ AGM on Sat Dec 3 A motion was passed to provide a 50% subsidy of the ACF Grand Prix entry fee each chess club pays, to all CAQ Inc Clubs that run Open Tournaments in 2012, so for example, a Class 1 entry will only cost the Club $50.
Get your 2 Suncoast Opens in now - and avoid a late entry fee!

Cheers Mark C Stokes xxxx Gold

PS Over 50 Tournaments are already on the Calendar for 2012!

Thanks for the wonderful gesture Jeff, but no need to include me in the sponsor / supporters list nor giving me such generous discounts for my next entry.

Truth is I had such a wonderful time this year that I would love to have the Powell Open as a permanent fixture in my annual chess / holiday calendar.

If I can make it OK, if not I would still love to pay my entry fee as a token of appreciation to your hospitality and wonderful efforts.

Everything else being OK I will be with you in 2013! Cheers and best regards to all! :)
