It was a great day of chess when sixteen players from Bundaberg Maryborough and Hervey Bay competed in the first chess tournament held at Hervey Bay in many years

The one day tournament was held to help promote the newly formed Hervey Bay Chess Group, which meets on Wednesdays at the Library

The Tournament was opened by the Mayor of the Hervey Bay Regional Council.

The event was an eight round swiss. Senior placegetters on the day were Keith McLeod
(1st), John Harris (2nd), and Melba Horwood (3rd). Junior placegetters were Timothy Harris
(1st), Brendan Dahl (2nd) and David House(3rd).

Keith McLeod was prevented from a grand slam win of eight games, when he agreed to a draw with John Harris. Timothy Harris had a draw with his father, John Harris. This was a great effort by Timothy as his father is one of the top Bundaberg Club players.

Medallions and prize money were presented by Ted Sorensen the local Member of Parliament.

It is hoped to have a one day tournament in Hervey Bay at least once a year.
