Seventy One players competed in the Wide Bay North School Teams Chess Championships at Thabeban on Friday 26 August. It was a great day of chess!!

The event was conducted as a “one in all in “ event with both Primary School Children and Secondary School Children competing in one division.
Top team on the day was St Patricks 1 Primary( consisting of Timothy Harris, Patrick Harris, Andrew Olley and Keiran Wallwork) with a total of 25 points. They defeated their old rivals Norville 1 by three and a half points.

Second place on the day went to Bundaberg Christian College 1 Secondary (consisting of Aishwarya Preshy, Anish Preshy, Jason Ruhle and Wesley Stone), who defeated their old rivals Kepnock by four and a half points.

St Patricks 1 and Bundaberg Christian College 1 will now represent the Wide Bay North District at the School State Chess Finals in Brisbane in October.

Bundaberg Christian College 2 gained third place and Norville State School 1 gained fourth place.

Timothy Harris and Aishwarya Preshy were the top scoring players on the day, each with a total of seven games out of eight games, a great effort!!.

Bundaberg Chess Club Secretary Allan Menham said there were many close games and the Bundaberg area has many top school chess players. This is no doubt due to the many school chess clubs in the district.

The children are now eagerly looking forward to the One Day Tournament for School Children to be held at Across the Waves Sports Club on Tuesday 25 October. There will be many cash prizes at this tournament owing to the Waves making available the venue free of cost to the Bundaberg Chess Club Inc.

Over one hundred and twenty children are expected to attend.
