Check and Checkmate were often spoken as sixteen keen child chess players competed in the Sunday Children’s Chess Tournament at the U3A rooms on Sunday 21 August.

Competition was great with some of the best child chess players in the district in attendance. Top scorer of the day was Timothy Harris who gained seven and a half games out of eight. He was prevented from a grand slam eight out of eight games win when his younger brother Patrick fought him to a draw.

Timothy Harris gained first place, Bryce Rosser gained second place and Patrick Harris gained third place overall in the tournament. Bryce’s only loss was to Timothy Harris.

In the second division, Courtney Parfitt gained first place, Mitchell Riggs gained second place and David Riggs gained third place.

It was certainly a day of upsets. Charles Liebenberg drew with Kieran Wallwork and defeated Alex Buckholz. Courtney Ryan defeated Kieran Wallwork and Bryce Rosser defeated Patrick Harris.

Bundaberg Children chess players are all looking forward to the Third Round of the team championships at Thabeban on Friday 26 August. The winners of the team championships on Friday will compete in the State Chess Finals for children in Brisbane in October.

Chess is extremely popular in schools in the district and most schools have active chess clubs. Members of the Bundaberg Chess Club Inc teach chess on a voluntary basis at many schools in the district:clap:
