MCC
GRAND PRIX
2012
More tournaments, more prizes, more opportunities!

In 2012, our Grand Prix will be made up of our 5 Monday evening FIDE rated tournaments, as well as our 4 FIDE rated weekend events, giving players 9 tournaments from which to score their grand prix points! A player’s scores from all 9 events will add up to form their grand prix score at the end of the year. The tournaments included are:

Australia Day Weekender: 7 rounds (Jan 26th – Jan 29th)
MCC Club Championship: 9 rounds (Feb 6th – Apr 16th)
ANZAC Day Weekender: 7 rounds (Apr 21st – Apr 25th)
City Of Melbourne Open: 9 rounds (Apr 30th – Jul 2nd)
Edwin Malitis Memorial: 7 rounds (Jul 16th – Aug 27th)
MCC Open: 9 rounds (Sep 10th – Nov 12th)
MCC Cup Weekender: 9 rounds (Nov 2nd – Nov 6th)
Bob Brooking Round Robins: 5 rounds (Nov 19th – Dec 17th)
Christmas Swiss: 6 rounds (Dec 14th – Dec 16th)

Every point a player scores in any of these events, equals a grand prix point, for example if a player scores 5.5 points in the club championship and 4 points in the City of Melbourne, they will have accumulated 9.5 points over the two events. At the end of the year, the players with the highest number of points will win the grand prix prizes.

PRIZE POOL:

1st, $400
2nd, $200
3rd, $150
4th, $100
5th, $70
6th, $50
7th, $30

1st under 1800, $350
2nd under 1800, $200
3rd under 1800, $150
4th under 1800, $100
5th under 1800, $50

1st under 1500, $350
2nd under 1500, $200
3rd under 1500, $150
4th under 1500, $100
5th under 1500, $50

The rating used all year for grand prix purposes will be the players ACF rating on January 26th (the first day of the Australia Day Weekender). Players can only win one prize.

Since our grand prix has been extremely successful in its first year, we have decided to extend it in 2012 to include more tournaments and thus more prizes. We now have 7 prizes in the open section and 5 in each of the two groups. 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes have all increased significantly.

2012 will be a better time than ever to play in MCC events, with 9 opportunities to grab the points!

You're making it tough on arbiters who like to play. Any chance that the GP could be your best 6 results?

You're making it tough on arbiters who like to play. Any chance that the GP could be your best 6 results?

I certainly hear what you are saying and feel for your position! But part of the idea of extending the grand prix is to reward people for playing as often as possible in MCC events (thats actually the whole purpose of having a grand prix at all).

That said though, Ive just worked out some stats which may make you feel a bit better!

Ive had a look at the 5 of these events which have already been played in 2011 (Aust Day, Club Champs, ANZAC Day, MCC Open, Malitis Mem). Of the 91 players who played in these events, only 2 of them have played in all 5! (John Dowling and Gary Bekker). And only 1 of them has played in 4 of the 5 (Kerry Stead)... That means that 88 of 91 players (97%) have played in 3/5 (60%) or less of all MCC grand prix events! Therefore if you play in 6 of the 9 events (66%), even with these rules, you will still be playing more than 97% of players (if the trend continues like this)...

In real terms, basically most players either play in the weekenders or the Monday night events - not many people play in both. Extending the Grand Prix is a way of trying to get people (from both groups) to play in both! If we get 10 "Monday night players" regularly into our weekenders and 10 "weekend players" playing on Monday nights, then it will be a great result for the club!

And a subsequent effect of the Grand Prix is to penalise players who volunteer their time and efforts to be arbiters of tournaments thus discouraging them from doing this important job.

I'll give you some statistics from my own personal point of view: I intend to play in the Aus Day Weekender, and will probably play ANZAC day as it doesn't fall too close to Easter this year. I will try to play Cup Weekender again, and I would like to play 2 tournaments on Monday nights and be arbiter of 3. If I needed 6 scores to count, then I would make the effort to play in the Christmas Swiss. If all 9 scores count, then I will either not bother with most of the weekenders OR not be an arbiter at all for the year.

One reason Monday nights are going well is because the tournaments have run smoothly, with neither myself nor Peter Tsai having had any complaints about the jobs we've done. Arbiters are important, and the MCC has a lack of them. I am the only willing arbiter at the club for Monday nights (and I do it for free!), and if the GP goes ahead in the format you propose I will seriously have to consider whether I am going to carry on in that role.

Allegro and Blitz should be included in GP :)

Lol excellent idea  and I am sure, MCC will come up with a way to reward regular Allegroists and Blitzers!

(not that they aren't rewarded already as in having the opportunity to play on a regular basis against players of master strength like James and yourself just to name a couple, thus gaining invaluable experience for their chess develompent)

Actually, one for the most interesting and commendable features of MCC's functioning under Grant's leadership is the egalitarian approach to all activities be it lengthy tournaments, weekenders, allegros, blitzes, opening & ending seminars etc.

So allegros and blitzes aren't considered as second rate, supplementary, poor relative activities only to fill in during breaks of "major" events!

Allegro should have its own GP, 1 point per win, 5 points per argument:D

FM Michael Baron is leading the grand prix after winning the first event (the MCC Australia Day Weekender)! That is 6 valuable points towards his final score! The players playing in the upcoming Club Championship who also played in this event will boost their standings by having played on Australia Day... Gorka, Urban, Ari Dale, Beaumont and Lycett are all set to play in the Club Champs and their points scored here will mean that a reasonable score in the Club Champs will put them in a very good position going into the third event of the year! An excellent score in the Club Champs will mean that they will be doing very well indeed! Here are the full results so far:

Players who have played in both of the first two events are now in the lead in the 2012 MCC Grand Prix - with Ari Dale, Sylvester Urban and David Beaumont leading the charge with 10 points, closely followed by Carl Gorka and Gary Lycett! Despite playing in only one event, Dusan Stojic and Guy West were so dominant in that event (the MCC Club Championship) that they are breathing down the leaders necks already!!! Rad Chmiel and Finley Dale are in the lead in the Under 1800 section while Finley is also leading the Under 1500 too!!! 3 of the top 5 Under 1800s are also elegible for the Under 1500, so it is all being very closely fought! Get down to MCC this weekend for the third event in the MCC Grand Prix - the MCC ANZAC Day Weekender. 7 points are up for grabs for anyone who is good enough to win them!

The ANZAC Day Weekender is finished now and Ari Dale and David Beaumont still share the lead in the MCC Grand Prix! Ironically, Ari and David drew their final round game in the tournament and thus we do not have an outright leader yet!!! Who will break away first??? The big news however is that a number of the lower rated players are taking it right up to the big guns! Garry Bekker, despite being eligible for the Under 1800 prizes is actually third on the table whilst Finley Dale and Jason Chew are 4th and 5th and eligible for both the Under 1800 and Under 1500 prizes!!!! It is all looking very exciting so far! The 4th MCC Grand Prix event - the City Of Melbourne Open begins on Monday evening! All players have the opportunity to nab 9 MCC GP points - if they are good enough!

How come certain players move up a rating division and others don't? For example Jack Puccini has 9 points but is only listed under 1500, while others such as Jason Chew appear in all the lists.

I have only done this for players who are in the top 5 in the top division or the top 3 in the middle division.... But yes, Jack Puccini and Tanya Kolak are clearly in contention in the second group...

Ari Dale is looking hard to catch in the MCC grand prix, extending his lead to 1.5 points after winning the City Of Melbourne Open! At this stage the only other player anywhere near him is David Beaumont with a pack of players 4.5 points or more further back! The under 1800 section is being very tightly contested with Garry Bekker leading with numerous players snapping at his heals whilst Finley Dale and Jack Puccini are both way out in front in the under 1500 section. The next (5th) event in the MCC Grand Prix is the Edwin Malitis Memorial - 7 rounds on Monday nights, beginning in a few weeks!

Ari Dale has stretched his lead in the MCC Grand Prix to a 2 point margin now with his 4.5 points gained from the Edwin Malitis Memorial. David Beaumont is also keeping up in second place... Sylvester Urban's 6.5 points from the Malitis Memorial has brought him up into the top 8... Finley Dale and Jack Puccini are dominating the lower sections and are even a chance to take home prizes from the open section!!! The next next (and 6th) event for the MCC Grand Prix is the upcoming MCC Open - a chance to take home up to 9 grand prix points in a single event!!! Get your entries in!!!

"The Airedale Terrier" and "The Goat" (Ari Dale and David Beaumont) are moving onwards and upwards and are looking like running away with the MCC Grand Prix! Not sure if Ari is playing, but Im hoping that there will be a big showdown in the upcoming Bob Brooking Round Robins between the 2 players!!! Richard Voon has surprised everyone by jumping into 3rd place with a strong performance in the Cup Weekender while Sylvester Urban is still a chance too! MCC Champion FM Dusan Stojic is the highest of the titled players with 13 points, followed by IM Mirko Rujevic on 12. Note that even if you are not titled, you still have a chance of winning this event if you play often enough and well enough!

Finley Dale, Jack Puccini and Garry Bekker are still out in front in the Under 1800 section, with Jack outscoring Finley by half a point in the Cup Weekender - meaning that he is now only half a point behind Finley. This section is looking like coming down to the wire at the end.

Of coure Finley and Jack are also eligible for the Under 1500 section too and have Jason Chew and Tanya Kolak snapping at their heals there, with Garry Bekker being uneligible for Under 1500 prizes.

You still have more chances to improve your grand prix totals: The MCC Open is almost finished and the final two events in the grand prix are the Bob Brooking Round Robins and the Christmas Swiss. Remember, you have to be in it to win it!!!

Updated here too. Good luck to everyone in the last two events of the year. With any luck we'll have Air Con installed for the Christmas Swiss on December 14th too.

Can ANYONE catch the Airedale Terrier (Ari Dale) or the Goat (David Beaumont)??? Ari and David have ploughed on ahead and was it not for a significant turn of events, they would simply just have to turn up, put in a mediocre performance in the final two events of the year and then take out the 1st and 2nd prizes respectively!

HOWEVER

The turn of events is significant: Ari will be overseas for the duration of the final two events (the Bob Brooking Round Robins and the Christmas Swiss) and David will be interstate for both of them too! This opens up the Grand Prix to a number of competitors snapping at their heels!!! To actually win the grand prix, a player will need 11 points to catch Ari (5/5 in the Brooking and 6/6 in the Christmas Swiss) so only Uncle Chop Chop (Richard Voon) and Jack Puccini can do it as Finley Dale will also be overseas. But there is a huge race now on for the other 6 prizes (2nd - 7th) in the top section, with Penroe, Lycett, Bekker, Chew, Urban, Gorka, Stojic and Rujevic all making their run! Things will look good for Voon if he can avoid the top round robin in the Brooking, whereas IM Rujevic is a confirmed starter in that tournament and will be wanting a 5/5 win! Its all getting very interesting now! What makes it extra interesting is that Finley Dale, Puccini, Chew and Bekker are in the running for higher prizes in the lower sections, which may open up more prizes up the top!

As I just alluded to, Dale, Puccini, Bekker and Chew have a vice-like grip on the lower sections, but since all except Bekker are elegible for both lower sections, more prizes may open up in the higher of the two - meaning that more players may end up in the money!

If you are in the top 10 players in ANY of the sections, you would be absolutely mad not to play in the Bob Brooking Round Robins and the Christmas Swiss if you can!!! There are 11 more points on offer over these events (5 in the Brooking and 6 in the Swiss) so you could improve your score significantly!!!

These are the results of the grand prix AFTER the Christmas Swiss, but BEFORE the finish of the Bob Brooking Round Robins - so none of the rounds of the round robins have been added in yet. I will add them in once the results are posted on chesschat! What I can tell you though is that David Beaumont has won the MCC Grand Prix regardless of what happened in his or other games tonight in the final round of the Brooking - congratulations David!

David Beaumont has won the 2012 MCC Grand Prix with 42.5 points - a magnificent effort and a great reward for someone who played in every one of MCC's nine Grand Prix events this year! Ari Dale finished second after leading for most of the year but missing the final two tournaments. The evergreen Richard Voon finished third.

Gary Bekker and Jason Chew dominated the lower sections and also were rewarded with large prizes for playing in all 9 events. Others to impress in the lower sections were Jack Puccini, Finley Dale and Tany Kolak.

One thing I love about the MCC Grand Prix is that it rewards participation first and foremost - followed by elitism. While our specific tournaments (eg. Club Championship, MCC Open, Cup Weekender etc) reward the players who play the best chess, the grand prix rewards those who not only play well, but also play a lot! Notice that the 7 prize winners in the open section only contain 1 titled player (MCC Champion FM Dusan Stojic), which indicates that the MCC Grand Prix offers great value to everyday players who support the club and its events year in year out and dont usually win a prize. You still have to play well to win a prize, but it makes it much easier if you also play a lot! Players are only elegible to win one prize each - in cases where a player could win more than one prize due to their score, they have been awarded the bigger prize (the one containing more money). Congratulations to all of the prize winners and thankyou for your continued support of the MCC and its events!
