Seventeen children competed in the Weekday Chess Tournament held at the U3A rooms on 7 July.

Four children were competing in their first Bundaberg Tournament and enjoyed the day very much. They also used clocks for the first time.

Outright winner for the day was Timothy Harris with a grand slam win of eight out of eight games. Timothy is one of the top Primary School players in Bundaberg and has competed in chess at State Level on numerous occasions. He has performed very well at the state level.

There was a tie for second place with Patrick Harris and Kieran Wallwork both winning six out of eight games.

In the under 550 division, Charles Liebenberg gained first place with four and a half games out of eight. He was followed by Jack Clarke and Hayden Cooper who gained four out of eight games.

There were numerous upsets on the day with higher rated players being defeated quite often by lower rated players.

Club Secretary/Tresurer Allan Menham commented on the very high standard of many of the games. This is no doubt due to the numerous chess clubs at schools in the district.
