I played this with a friend of mine, and it was the first "real" game I'd played in a few years, so I was wondering if someone could point out some areas I might need to work on, where I've gone rusty, etc. Although I won (I was white) I think my attack might have been premature and could have been stronger. The way I see it 8. ... d5 was the decisive move that let me win, but I want to see the opinion of others as well.

I'm sure others will be along later to give more qualified advice, but here's my take on things. I assume you've run it through Fritz to check the tactics so I won't bother too much with that.

5. ...b6 looks like rather an indulgence to me. ...d5 or ...c5 look more promising, though personally I'd have been inclined to play ...c5 on move three. I'm not too keen on 7. ...O-O either.

I'm not sure 8. ...d5 is as bad as all that, though personally I would have been inclined to play ...d6 with perhaps ...c5 to follow.

9. ...Ne4 on the other hand looks quite bad. ...Nfd7 followed by ...c5, ...Nc6 etc, or even ...Ng4 followed by ...f6 look like better prospects. The knight can't be immediately pushed back after ...Ng4 because e3 would need to be covered. And if pushed back to h6 it can hop back into f7 or f5 as appropriate. The e6 pawn would be a problem, though, assuming you captured on f6. I like ..Nfd7 best.

11. ...Nc6 looks a little better. And then there's 12. ...Qe7 instead of ...h6.

You might consider playing 15. f5, I'm not sure black can get away with taking on d4.

Also it's probably worth taking the Nf6 on move 17 before playing ...f5. After Rxf6 you can still play ...f5.

19. ...Qg5 doesn't seem worth much. Rxf5 seems a more useful exchange sac, but it's difficult to find any good moves.

After that it's all over bar the shouting, really.
