Hi everyone. The first in this series of rapid tournaments starts in a week - looking forward to seeing many of you there. It is open to players of all strengths, juniors and adults. Note that this series encompasses the annual Billanook Chess Classic which was held last November.

To date the top seed for the event is IM Leonid Sandler.:)

Any questions, check the Northern Star Chess website or contact Pearl Yung via the email address in the above post. You can also ask me here.

I might come and play.
Is there any public transport to and from the venue? At the juniors there was a shuttle bus from the station to the school but it seems like there isn't for this tournament.

I have sent out publicity for this tournament to everybody on the Chess Victoria mailing list. Hopefully this will attract participants

Hi Miranda. Will be great if you come and play.
The shuttle bus won't be operating but those of us with cars will be happy to pick you up at the station and drop you back. Just give Pearl Yung a call when you arrive and she'll get someone to pick you up (possibly me. :) )
If anyone else would like to contact Pearl directly to organise this, her phone number is 0407 072 250 or you can email her at the address in the first post.

For those who don't know: Mooroolbark Station is on the Lilydale train line. It takes about an hour from Flinders Street Station to get to Mooroolbark. This Saturday the 7:50 am from Flinders Street is scheduled to arrive at Mooroolbark at 8:49 am. That's probably the best train to catch for those coming by train. Billanook College is about 2.5 kms from the station so it's not a long drive from there.

Just an extra note on this: the cash pool per tournament is $350+.

I've just been advised that the categories are now Open, U18, U14, U12, U10 (U12 is a new category which is not on the website.)

The top seed is IM Leonid Sandler and Paul Bearup is the second seed but that may change as we expect quite a number of people to turn up on the day as they usually do!

Hi everyone. It all went very well on Sunday I've been told.

This is just a quick message to say that Pearl provided me with all the results shortly after the tournament finished - SORRY for the delay in posting them (I'm a bit frantic with study.) I'll do it tonight!

Just a quick note to remind people that apart from all the prize-money, trophies, medals and give-aways that will be given out on the day of the tournament, there will also be the 5th Billanook CCCC Booklet containing the second half of FM Bill Jordan's article "Turning back the (chess) clock".

In this article he reminisces about his long career in chess and also gives an interesting insight into the personalities and developments in Victorian and Australian chess since the 1960's. Well worth a read for those interested in the history of Australian chess.

The booklet is free to those competing in the event.
