most popuar move for black} 5. cxd5 Nxd5 6. Bb5 Nxc3 7. bxc3 e4 {most common
move is 7.. Bd6, with the game move it may take some time for white's bishop
on c1 to get to a better square} 8. Ne5 Bd7 {8..Qg5 may be tempting, but it's
a loosing move after 9.Qa4 when white has many threats, for example 9..Qxe5,
10. Bxc6 when after 10..bxc6, 11.Qxc6 wins rook on a8. A better option than
the game move may have been 8...a6, when after 9.Nxc6 Black can play 9..Qd5,
and will regain the piece back.} 9. Nxd7 Qxd7 10. Qa4 f5 11. O-O {White's
position has to be liked here, black is in bit of a tangle, white's bishop on
b5 is doing a great job restricting any movement for black, white can even
later on exchange bishop for knight and leave black with double pawns.} Be7 12.
f3 exf3 13. Rxf3 O-O {black has at least castled, but comfortable position for
white to play} 14. d4 {now white is going to get strong centre, and has simple
plan of developing the bishop on c1, and doubling the rooks on f file.} Kh8 {
moving the king avoiding any possible checks by the bishop or the queen later
on.} 15. Bd2 g6 {maybe black should play 15... a6 to see what white will do
with the bishop. i probably would have played 16.Bd3 and focus on the kingside
attack.} 16. Raf1 Kg7 17. Qc2 {white decides to focus on black's weaknesses on
the kingside now, although 17. Bd3 would have been a better way to start.} a6
$2 {the move 17. Qc2 was serious error by white as black had a chance to get
back in the game by 17...Nxd4! After 17..Nxd4 18.cxd4 is forced, and then
after 18..Qxb5, 19. Qxc7 19..Rf7 white perhaps has slight edge, but it's a
much better alternative than the game.} 18. Bd3 Rae8 19. e4 {with this move,
white opens up his bishop on d2 to get in the game, black has weaknesses on
the kingside} fxe4 20. Bxe4 Rxf3 21. Rxf3 Bf6 22. Bd3 b5 {if white doesn't
suceed with his attack, black will have counterplay with b4, when white's
structure on the queenside will be weakned.} 23. Qc1 {keeping the pressure on,
Bh6+ threatens to win bishop on f6} Qe7 24. Bh6+ Kg8 25. a4 $1 {hard to
believe that this move is the key to a great combination white will produce,
white needs his bishop on d3 to get to c4.} b4 26. Bc4+ Kh8 27. Qf1 $1 {no
escape for black now, if bishop on f6 moves, white's rook comes to f7} Na5 28.
Rxf6 Nxc4 29. Rf7 Qd6 {if 29..Qe6, then white win by 30.Rf8+ 30.. Rxf8, 31.
Qxf8, 31..Qg8, 32.. Bg7+ mate} 30. Qxc4 Re1+ 31. Kf2 {black can't stop 32.

A very impressive presence of the Noble Park Chess Club in 2011 Dandenong's GameOn Sport and Cultural Day festivities.

I went fishing early in the day and it was reallyh cold early in the morning so I had warm clothes on! Later on I had to suffer since we had a very hot day in Victoria, but the visit to the Club's stand more than contributed to me cooling down and actually having a great day of chess and meeting old and new friends! :)

I was giving specific intstuctions by the gentleman at Yarraman Station: "Follow the track from the Railway Bridge and you can't miss it"!
But me being me, when I reached the following position....

I decided to discover my own shortcut so I ended up here ...

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee481/jak_jak1/Noble%20Park%20Chess%20Club/100_2220.jpg

As you might have noticed from my other photographic adventures I have an uncanny ability to discover water but unless I was ready to swim across, no chance to locate the festival grounds this way... So I had to go back! :)

After some more wondering around delightful creeks and beautiful Greeves Resort locations ....

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee481/jak_jak1/Noble%20Park%20Chess%20Club/100_2219.jpg

the friendly face of my friend Michael Loh (Zach's dad) appeared as he was revealing the marvels of chess to some young enthusiasts in the indoor sports complex reception! :)

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee481/jak_jak1/Noble%20Park%20Chess%20Club/100_2235.jpg

Facing Dusan and Domagoj Dragicevic the participants did not have an easy task but they learned a lot from the experience and let's hope that they will join Noble Park Chess Club soon! :)

In conclusion it was a great day. I met Mrs and Mr Stojic (parents of Dusan and Svetozar) whom I hadn't seen for a long time and Mrs Loh (Zach's mum)! They all looked great and enjoyed the day! On the way back, miles away from the venue, I also met Mr and Mrs Mijatovic who had taken out for a pleasant sunny Sunday afternoon outing their beautiful granddaughter!

Good on you Noble Park.

You have taken two of our Box Hill ideas and and are doing them well.

You will notice the increase in membership although this may take time.

Other clubs should do the same.

JaK,
Thanks for your kind words, especially the bit about "revealing the marvels of chess". I know the moves - that's about it :) . We were so caught up with meeting people and playing chess that we didn't take many photos. Space permitting, could we use one or two of your simul photos for our next newsletter?

Like you said, it was a great day out - we had about approx 50 people had come in, taken flyers and been part of the simul in the couple of hours that we were at the Dandenong Showgrounds. Dusan estimated he and Dom had played about 30. We had great feedback also; a lady said "What an honour!" when we explained that she's playing the current Joint Victorian Champion.

Just doing our bit to build chess awareness in the Greater Dandenong community. Our vision is to bring people of all ages and background together through the game of chess.

Mike

PS
If you think the inaugural issue is great, wait till you see the April 9 issue. It is 60% done and we are very excited about it.

We had a very successful Open Day at Noble Park Chess Club. We estimate more than 50 people came by to check out the club. Leonid Sandler (Chess Victoria Prez), Elliot Renzies, Peter Tsai and NY Wong were among the many visitors. They had many kind words of encouragement and we thank them for it.

The showcase activity was a simultaneous simul with FM Chris Wallis and FM Dusan Stojic. I think everyone had a bit of fun and after that there was plenty of time for a couple of games of blitz. This was also the perfect setting for Club Prez, Kai Tan, to present to the winners of the Club Championship, shiny new trophies. Photos posted in this thread (http://chesschat.org/showpost.php?p=306346&postcount=22).

Our inaugural junior coaching class started today with the first 6 students who were ably taught by Dusan Stojic.

Despite an unexpected glitch with our coaching room being mistakenly taken over by a kids' dance concert , we quickly improvised and held our class in the open reception area - it turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as the lesson was watched by many passers-by, and we had a few queries from them.

Dusan did a great job and we are looking forward to increased numbers next week as word spreads. He was helped by his assistant, Zach Loh and even FIDE trainer NY Wong was there to give a hand. Thanks guys.

Classes will take place on 16/4 /11 at 2 p.m. and then fortnightly thereafter - so the one after that will be 30 /4/11.

Indeed, Dusan is great with the kids who also loved Zach's approach and of course barracked for him in his friendly blitz games. Here is Zach playing fast chess closely watched by his mate Kyle Gibson!

This has been a fantastic year for Noble Park Chess Club. This final newsletter for 2011 is a testament of just how much each committee, club member, Junior Coaching Program (JCP) kid and parent cares about Noble Park Chess Club, our club. A big thank you to everyone who has supported and encouraged me in putting together the newsletters. It was hard work but a lot of fun. I hope you enjoy reading this newsletter and continue to support the club next year.

All the photos are available for download from this location. There are a few more group photos, which I wasn't able to put in the newsletter.

Noble Park Chess Club is pleased to announce the 2012 Noble Park Chess Club Committee, voted in at the Annual General Meeting held today at Paddy O'Donoghue Centre, 18-32 Buckley Street, Noble Park, Victoria 3174.

Congratulations to the new committee and a big thank you to the 2011 committee and everyone who attended the AGM today. 2012 promises to be an exciting year with the announcement of Noble Park's inaugural weekender tournament, the Noble Park Chess Club Classic 2012, scheduled for 22-23 September. We will be expanding our junior program to include school incursions, in partnership with Northern Star Chess. Our aim is to introduce children to the wonderful game of chess and provide a pathway for them to grow and mature as a chess player. The introduction of a new novice tournament will help juniors and some adults make this transition.

We look forward to meeting you at our club events next year.

Hi Kai, I 've already put down on my diary the dates of the Club Championship, I understand this is the Classic!

I will require two postponements, or byes (I don't know the policy of the Club in those matters)

The first for Round 2 (Feb 18 - business trip to Tasmania) and

the second for Round 8 (April 14 - Parramatta Chess Festival) but I presume it is too early for this kind of arrangements.

Hi Jak,

The NPCC Classic is not the championships. The NPCC Classic is the weekender on 22 -23 Sept 2012. Just to clarify, that is the one which you wish to donate to...right? I don't want to allocate money to something you haven't agreed to:)

As for the championships, which starts in Feb, all the postponement requests etc should now be made to our brand new tournament director, John Nemeth!

Cheers
Kai

Hi Kai, oops sorry didn't know that although there was some talk about it during the AGM. Incidentally, I have already put down all NPCC's events (including the Classic) throughout the year on my diary!

I leave decisions like that to the committee! I am enthused with all aspects of NPCC's activities, so there isn't any particular preference on my behalf! Do as you see fit! :)

Thanks Kai, I will need all the possible luck I can get! I am the only member of our household who has yet to contribute even a fraction of a point to the team! :(

On a brighter side, we are having a lovely time here!

For me the day begins with an early sightseeing tour - so many places to go and things to see!

Every evening after dinner we get together and analyse our games of the day!

Then the boys plan their preparation schedule for next day (today Dom and Dusan are playing against GMs)!

Some of our discussions revolve around Noble Park Chess Club and its bright future!

The junior coaching classes,

The news bulletin

Planning our inaugural weekender

are amongst the topics we discuss enthusiastially here!

Don't forget I share with the Club's President and Treasurer here, so I obtain first hand information! ;)

Best of luck to Justin, Zach and all our youngsters who participate in the Aus Junior Champs!

See you all back in Melbourne (that's if my application for permanent residence status is not accepted!) :P

I am enjoying this place so much, I will try to extend my staying here by at least another week.

Our friend Stephen Lukey, who shares a house with Dusan Stojic, Domagoj Dragicevic and myself, took us for a visit to Arrowtown today and after some wonderful countryside sightseing, we reached the famous Kawarau Bridge and the bungy jumps place!

"I 'll do it!" said Dusan in the spirit of the moment

And he did! (please everyone don't tell his mum)!

It's usually Zach Loh who collects the trophies! Earlier in the afternoon it was his dad Michael's turn to be awarded a distinction by Noble Park Chess Club's President FM Dusan Stojic. Michael was the manager of one of the NPCC's three successful teams in the recent Victoria Interclub competition! Well deserved Michael!

Today at 3 pm!

Free entry to bonus blitz tournament with prizes and free simul plus food!

15-09-2012, 11:35 PM
This afternoon the club hosted its Open Day with range of activities such as simul, bonus blitz tournament, presentation from the last tournament with free food provided as well. It was encouraging to see some new faces for the first time in the club. The simul was provided by Justin Tan, who believes he played up to 20 games. Whilst he won most of his games, he did draw to Bill Yuan and lost against Kevin Cron. Lots of young kids from the club's junior coaching program were very keen to play against Justin so we hope that they enjoyed the experience. Afterwards, Justin and Bill were late entrants to the club's bonus blitz tournament, an invention by the club this year where after the event is finished, players get bonus points based on their rating. So players with rating greater than 2000 get 0 points, players rated between 1700-2000 gets 1 bonus point, players rated between 1400-1700 receive 2 bonus points, players rated between 1100-1400 receive 3 bonus points whilst any players below 1100 receive 4 bonus points. In this 11 round event, the tournament was won by Laurence Matheson with 9.5/11 and no-one was able to catch him even with bonus points.

Here are the final standings.

1 Matheson, Laurence VIC 2189 9.5 50.5 62.0 59.5
2-3 Dragicevic, Domagoj VIC 2301 9 51.0 63.0 48.0

5-6 Stojic, Dusan VIC 2304 6 58.0 71.0 35.5
Sannidhanam, Anurag VIC 1702 6 53.0 64.0 35.0
7-9 Chan, Kris VIC 1372 5 55.5 66.5 33.0
Khaled, Omar OS 1921 5 48.0 59.0 28.0
Drew, Phillip VIC 1749 5 43.5 54.0 27.0
10-12 Chan, Luis VIC 1201 4 55.0 66.0 25.0
Tan, Justin VIC 2297 4 47.0 58.0 12.0

13 Crowley, Regan VIC 939 3 49.0 60.0 21.0
14-15 Stojic, Milan VIC 1084 2 44.0 54.5 15.0
Yuan, Bill VIC 601 2 44.0 53.5 11.0
16 Poojary, Ash 0 6.0 12.5 0.0

With bonus points, the standings would look like this

1st Laurence Matheson 9.5/11
=2nd Domagoj Dragicevic, John Nemeth, Svetozar Stojic 9/11
5th Kris Chan 8/11
=6th Anurag Sannidhanam, Luis Chan, Carl Dingfelder, Regan Crowley 7/11
=10th Dusan Stojic, Omar Khaled, Phillip Drew, Milan Stojic, Bill Yuan 6/11

To top it off, we had presentation for recently finished Masters&Challengers tournament, and also the Reserves tournament. Most prizewinners were present which was great.

A very enjoyable day overall!!!

To kick things of for 2013, Noble Park CC hosted an Open Day last Saturday 2 February. The format was the same as last year, with the "Bonus Blitz" running alongside the simul (this time given by Yours Truly).

I played 5 players in the simul, with several games against each player, and scored 12.5/13. Ethan Abarca (new member for 2013) held me to a draw (fittingly in the last game to finish), thus winning 50% off his entry into the 2013 Noble Park CC Championship.

In the Bonus Blitz, Milorad Mijatovic had the highest score before the bonus with 8.5/9. However, he received no bonus points (over 2000) and was overtaken by Rebecca Strickland, whose score of 5/9 was boosted to 9, (+4, U/1100 category). So Rebecca also won 50% off entry into the Championship. Congratulations to Ethan and Rebecca!

Final standings (9 rounds) before bonus:

1 Milojevic, Miodrag 2100 8.5 (+0)
2 Tan, Justin 2301 8 (+0)
3-4 Nemeth, John 2120 6.5 (+0)
Stojic, Svetozar 1992 6.5 (+1)
5 Strickland, Rebecca 1011 5 (+4)
6 Dingfielder, Carl 1323 4 (+3)
7 Kam, Ryan 1000 3.5 (+4)
8 Von't Steen, Roel 900 2 (+4)
9 Christabel, Andrew 1 (+4)
10 Kam, Sara 400 0 (+4)

After bonus:

1 Strickland, Rebecca 1011 9
2 Milojevic, Miodrag 2100 8.5
3 Tan, Justin 2301 8
4-5 Stojic, Svetozar 1992 7.5
Kam, Ryan 1000 7.5
6 Dingfielder, Carl 1323 6
7 Nemeth, John 2120 6.5
8 Von't Steen, Roel 900 6
9 Christabel, Andrew 5
10 Kam, Sara 400 4

Overall, it was a fun day and pretty well attended. A nice warm-up to a great year ahead for Noble Park CC!

We'd like to report on some interclub action that happened last Thursday - a team of four (Abdulwahab Rashid, Milic Sucevic, Prince Itty Panicker, and Eduardo Toro) represented Noble Park in this away match at Mentone's regular Thursday session. The match was played at the 60 + 10 time control, with the following results:

1. Beet,C 1834 v Rashid,A 1943!! 1-0
2. Sucevic,M 1452!! v Leontyev, L 1764! 0-1
3. Mustafa,M 1407! v Itty Panicker,P 1585? 1-0
4. Toro,E 1366!! v Jans,P unr. 1-0

so a win for Mentone 3-1.

The previous match in 2017 had been tied 2-2; although I was unable to attend I was told this year's match was very close as well.

In other news, we will be publishing the club's newsletter next Saturday 5th of May (we'll put it online and have a few print copies at the club); this has been made possible by Janaki Narenthran, who volunteered to do much of the editorial work, and by several contributors (Dom Dragicevic, Nick Ilic, George Loucas, Calvin Augustine, and myself). We will aim to publish the newsletter every four months or so - if you have an idea for an article or report please let us know and you could make it into the August issue.

The September Allegro was held today as a round robin since we had only 5 entrants. The background drone of racing cars from the neighbouring suburb (Sandown Park racecourse) made one wonder if our members went there instead this week...

All entry fees were returned as prizes, with the results:

1st - Kevin Bao, 3.5/5 ($20)
2nd - Metin Mustafa, 3/5 ($10)
3rd - Prabhat Mehta, 2/5 ($5)
4th - Jackie Li, 1/5
5th - Ryley Dang, 0.5/5

The club will be closed both for junior coaching and at 3 pm next week, and will reopen the following week for the first round of the Spring Cup, on Grand Final day. If you need a bye for round 1 of the Spring Cup let us know early and often.

The annual friendly match between Noble Park and Mentone Chess Clubs was played on three boards at Paddy O'Donoghue Centre this afternoon, Saturday the 27th of April, at a time control of 60 + 10.

Noble Park won the draw for colours, playing White on boards 1 and 3, but Leon won quickly with accurate play on board 2, establishing a one-point lead for Mentone which proved insurmountable; although Kathleen's win got the home club onto the scoreboard at least!

Results:

Mentone - Noble, 2 - 1

1. Cameron Beet - Ethan Hooi, 1-0
2. Leon Leontyev - Douglas Dias, 1-0
3. Metin Mustafa - Kathleen Hooi, 0-1

Next week, May 4th, will be the Knights Cup (open to all ages!) and the following week, on May 11th, the Teams Open (http://www.chesschat.org/showthread.php?17512-Noble-Park-Teams-Open for details) will start.

In 2020, the club will be running differently to previous years; as we've been unable to cover the costs of running long-play tournaments, we are going to be running shorter sessions more geared towards casual and rapid chess. Hopefully in future we'll have the option to return to classical tournaments at a new venue.

Our calendar for the first half of the year is viewable at http://nobleparkchess.org.au/Calendar.html , and membership info is also on the website (http://nobleparkchess.org.au/Membership.html)

The Junior Coaching Program will continue to run 2 - 3 pm on Saturdays, starting this Saturday February 8th (see http://nobleparkchess.org.au/JuniorClub.html).

We will aim to run the Knights Cup on a monthly basis, with the first one coming up on February 22nd (see http://www.chesschat.org/showthread.php?17870-2020-Noble-Park-Knights-Cup-February-22nd).

Starting on February 29th we will, after the junior coaching session, keep the club open for members and/or visitors to play casual games from 3 - 4:30 pm.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the club again!
