Sixty children attended the Wide Bay North Team Chess Championships held at Thabeban School on 23 February.

This was the first round of the championships with two more rounds to be held over the coming months

Primary and Secondary School Children played in the one tournament .
The top team of the day was St Patricks School with 27 points out of a possible 36. They were followed by their old rivals Norville School with 23.5 points out of a possible 36. Bundaberg Christian College came third with Bundaberg North Primary coming fourth.

The top scorers for the day were Keiran Wallwork and Patrick Harris, each with 8 points out of 9. Brialey Hohn came third with 7.5 points and Andrew Olley came fourth with 7 points.

Some of the players were playing in their first tournament and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Clocks were used on the top tables.

Eight schools participated in the tournament.

Bundaberg Chess Club Secretary Allan Menham said interest in chess is increasing with two more schools starting chess clubs in 2011 and two other schools investigating the establishment of clubs. He said the lack of tutors is preventing some schools from starting chess clubs
