Seventeen children competed in the Sunday Children’s Chess Tournament held at the U3A rooms on Sunday 20 February

With some of the top child chess players in Bundaberg in attendance, as well as two top Maryborough players, competition was going to be keen

The Tournament was conducted in two divisions, with children rated over 600 in the top division and children rated under 600 in the second division

In the top division, Timothy Harris blitzed all opponents, winning eight out of eight games. He was followed by Ashwarya Preshy with 6.5 games out of eight. In third place was Brandon Lowe from Maryborough with David House from Maryborough in fourth place

In the second division, Patrick Harris came first with 4.5 games out of eight. Second place was Mitchell Riggs, third place was Allen Preshy with David Riggs in fourth place

Director of Play Allan Menham said the standard of chess amongst the children is improving in leaps and bounds, no doubt to the numerous tournaments held and the growth of school chess clubs.

The first round of the Wide Bay North Team Chess Championships is to be held in Bundaberg on Wednesday 23 February. Some of the competitors in the Sunday tournament will be playing in the Wednesday Tournament.
