Safari 6.5 1 postponed. Hiynh 6.5. Adams 5.5. Mariner v Rob Watson still going when I left after my game finished.
It'd FIDE rated so I hope my rating will go up.

Hi David.
No. It is currently WIP.
Our former webmaster went overseas and has been non-contactaable. Any email about renewal of the domain /site would have gone to his old address so the PCC has not seen it. So for now the site has lapsed. We are endeavouring to get the site back up and running. I will post here when this occurs.

New member and now committee member Ravi Kashelkar (UNR!) has won the Parramatta Spring Cup convincingly with 8.5/9. He only conceded one draw - to my fellow Kiwi Gavin Marner. This tournament will be both FIDE and ACF rated.

Next week at 7.45 PM Gary McNamara will be giving a lecture on the Caro-Kann as a preliminary to a 10 round Rapid (20 minutes + 10 second increment) thematic tournament played over the next 5 nights. Both the lecture and the tournament will start from the position after the following sequence , and Gary's lecture will consider both Black recaptures:

1 e4 c6 2 d4 d5 3 Nc3 de 4 Nxe4 Nf6 5 Nxf6+. As Gary said, the 2 recaptures here lead to radically different positions / pawn structures and either is ok for this tournament.

All welcome at the small cost of joining the Parra RSL if you wish to play in the thematic tournament.

Rising junior Laughlan James has won the Caro-Kann thematic rapid tournament with 2 rounds still to go! 100% score and can't be caught.

Tonight we had an excellent lecture from Gary McNamara around the theme of how to play against a higher rated player. 4 games were demonstrated and discussed by an appreciative (if too small) audience.

Kudos all round!

Next week rounds 9 and 10 of thematic.

Thurs 13 Dec - Special General Meeting (including election of President and committee for 2013), prize-giving and Christmas party (featuring "pocket knight" 5 minutes fun tournament). All welcome!

Thurs 20 Dec social chess.

LOL, knight of course. Good fun. Normal chess except one can add an extra knight to the board at any time but it must not be a check or a capture. Of one's own chess piece colour of course - black or white!

That is great news, Alana. You will be very welcome.
First major event for the year will be hosting the City of Sydney championships starting in February. Before long our web site calendar will have the outline of the year up for all to see.
Best wishes for your arbiting duties at the Australian Open. See you there at some stage.

I'll almost definitely be playing City of Sydney, but I will see what happens with the other events depending on how busy I am and whether I hate chess or not. :)

Just a polite heads-up for the NSWCA (not you Adamski), the advertising for the City of Sydney on nswca.org.au and in the brochure has the dates as "7 February 2011 to 21 March 2013". I know I'm good at picking up FIDE registrations 30 days in advance, but travelling 2 years into the past is beyond me...

Change of Plan for Parra CC tomorrow night. IM Max Illingworth will play a simul. $10 to take a board. Starts 7.30 so arrive by 7.20 if you want to play.Max achieved 100% tonight over 13 boards. Terrific performance! Included some strongish opponents such as Laughlan James, Jerry Xu and Victor Ibrahim. A prize of $10 went to newish junior member Linus Cooper, who was last to finish and at one stage missed a draw in a Max 2 R's and extra P v Q ending. Stephen Roche was second last to finish and also gave Max a good run for his money after Max sacrificed the exchange.
Yours truly administered the event and did not play.

Add me to the list. I need a bit of a warm up before CoS and I'm not playing Australia Day Weekender.

What time control is it? 15 0 or 20+10?

Congratulations to new member Alana Chibnall who won the Parra Summer allegro. Those behind her included Gavin Marner (who beat her but lost to Ravi), 2200 ACF-rated Ravi Kashelkar (who missed the first night so began tonight from 2/4 - 4 half point byes), Josh Christensen and Laughlan James. Yours truly only scored 50%.

Next week is Round 1 of 7 consecutive for the City of Sydney Championship. $35 entry fee to NSWCA. Good prizes. See NSWCA web site for details. It is possible to miss a round as Ravi e.g. is doing for Round 1.

Thanks Jonathan. If only the winning streak could continue for the next tournament! I got so ridiculously lucky in some of those games - should have lost at least 4 of them :)

I will post the crosstable up here when I am on my other computer next. Just wondering are you planning to send that tournament off for rapid ratings or not worry about it? If so I need to sent the files off to Bill/Rob.

No. We didn't advertise it as a rated event so we can't rate it. Rather, as a warm up allegro to get rid of the cobwebs and have some games under our belt before the City of Sydney.
We aren't running any other event at the time of the C of S, so hope most of our members can play.

The following article was published in the 41st year of my chess column in the Sydney Morning Herald on Monday 1st July 2013.

The FIDE rated nine round rapid over three Thursday evenings commences this week at Parramatta RSL. Arthur Huynh won the 19 player club championship scoring 7/9 and 80-year-old veteran IO Norm Greenwood won the 25 player U 1700 rated event also with 7/9.

I have not been asked to register any FIDE rated Rapid at Parramatta for this coming Thursday.
This was done by Arthur Huynh and all is ok.

I can't resist posting that I had a good night in this FIDE rated Rapid last night. I scored 3/3 and now have 5/6 which puts me first equal with Arthur and Ernesto Puzon.
It could all come unstuck next week as I have to play Arthur next. My loss was to Ernesto and my best win was the last round on Board 1 vs Dr Vasil Tulevski. This was my first win in competitive chess against Vasil. He is 4th on 4.5.

The Rapd was won by Ernesto Puzon. Congratulations, Ernesto!

Last Thurs night we had the lightning (FIDE rated) which was won by Kevin Willathgamuwa, despie the fact that there were 2 over 2000 playes in the event. Well done Kevin!

This week we start the 9 round Parramatta Winter Cup, both FIDE and ACF rated. Time control is 90 minutes plus 30 second increment per move. Come and join us in this event where the field is expected to be strong!

I note Adamski says the field is expected to be strong in the Parramatta RSL FIDE and ACF rated winter cup starting this Thursday 1 August.

According to the website the event is restricted to players rated under 2200 and is listed as an amateur event.

The website does not specify if it is restricted to under 2200 FIDE or under 2200 ACF rating.

The last (ninth) round is on 26 September according to the website yet it ends on 3 October.

Clarification appreciated on the website and chess chat. Thank you.

I'd also like to know why a tournament restricted to under 2200 players in a venue notorious for early ejection of players has a 90 + 30 time control, when it could easily be 90 + 10 and still be FIDE rated without so much worry about the venue closing before the games all end..

Yes, my bad. I have confirmed with Arthur. The details on the web site are correct except for finishing date. The details as registered are correct including the faster time limit. 9 rounds over 10 weeks. The 10 weeks is a precaution as there may be a night when we cannot get the venue.

Gavin did win against Jose. In the next round we both lost - him to Josh Christensen and I to Sandeep George, who was also on 3.5 at the start of that round.
Last week (due to unforeseen circumstances) there were no games in the Winter Cup so it was handy that we had allocated 10 weeks for a 9 round tournament.
Instead we played 3 lightning round robins of roughly equal strengh. One was won by a new member, the one I was in by George Bai and I am not sure who won the third one.

I have a question for those that play at Parramatta. Last week, I saw on the Parramatta Chess Website Calender the "Parramatta Summer Cup" beginning on the 10 October but has since disappeared. Anyone know if the Summer Cup is still running?

Congratulations to Josh Christensen who has won the Parramatta Winter Cup with a round to spare. I may get him in the last round.I did draw Josh but had to default as we could not find a time to play before I left the country for 2 weeks.

Hi,
Parra Summer Cup started later than advertised on web site as the venue was unavailable (again) one of the weeks. Web site will be updated soon.
Last week a lecture was given by Gary Mcnamara.
Round 1 was played last week. I am not playing.
People can still enter from Round 2.

Yes, I was there for the first round. I was told because the tournament started late, it is not FIDE rated.

Sad news from Shane Burgess. Paramatta CC has not been able to find a venue for the remainder of this year. Shane is hopeful that one will be found next year.
