Ok, here are round 2 pairings. Also, just want to remind players that games start at 3 pm from next week onwards. Also, for anyone travelling by train from city to Noble Park, there are buses running between Oakleigh and Springvale instead of trains, so just make sure you leave earlier. Also, we will still be accepting entries for round 2, so if you still want to play, please let me know.

We had a fantastic turnout for the Noble Park Chess Club Open Day. We estimate more than 50 people came by to check out the club. Leonid Sandler (Chess Victoria Prez), Elliot Renzies, Peter Tsai and NY Wong were among the many visitors. They had many kind words of encouragement and we thank them for it.

This was the perfect setting to present the Club Championship trophies. The Club Champion will be decided between Domagoj Dragicevic and Justin Tan through a play-off series, to be scheduled shortly. So the winners are:

1. Club Champions-elect: Domagoj Dragicevic and Justin Tan

Thanks! Great pictures!

2nd game is scheduled for Sunday 1 May at MCC, provisionally the morning - subject to confirmation by MCC.

Domagoj needs to win the game. With the score 1-0 to Justin, a draw will give Justin the champion's trophy. If Domagoj wins, they will go on to a rapid play-off which they are intending to play straight after. Should be exciting!

Thanks for your great support for the club!

Hi Kai thanks for your kind words, it's a real pleasure to be a member of this wonderful club - so representative of our multicultural society's spirit and ideology!
Unfortunately, I won't be able to make in on May 1, since I will still be in Sydney for the Parramatta Festival.
However, I wish both players all the best and I am sure Michael Loh or someone else will be there to take some pictures of the event!
Looking forward to see you all for round 3 of the Club's tournament! :)

The second match of the playoff ended with Domagoj winning against Justin levelling 1-1. That meant that the playoff went to 2 rapid games, and both games were hard fought draws with the second match going for 83 moves. The next installment of the playoff will be 2 blitz games which is likely to be played at the NP chess club on a Saturday before Noble Park Open games begin. The date is yet to be decided. It's been a very exciting playoff.

Exactly , Michael - it shows that the Noble Park Championship title is one which is not easily won and that trophy has to be hard-fought over! .......just like the world championship play-offs!

I think the play-offs have taken over 7 hrs so far, and it isn't yet over:P

Well, I recall Michael Baron saying that this playoff is turning out to be like world champiosnhip playoff and looks like he is right as there hasn't been a winner decided even after the blitz games. It looks like both players want that great trophy. Dusan Stojic would be happy with this playoff not being resolved as he gets to hold on to the trophy for a bit longer :) .

So at about 2:40, the first two matches began, with both players winning a game a piece, both with black pieces. As it was a tie, the players decide to play another 2 games with the score once again being 1-1, with both players winning with white pieces. So after all that, we will keep playing with the blitz until winner is found. Originally, the players were going to play it next Saturday, but unfortunately I don't believe that the matches will be played on Saturday before the Noble Park OPen game as both players were tired after the blitz game, therefore not playing at full capacity in Open. So the players will discuss possible options. Also, I just want to thank all members who came to the club early to watch the playoff matches, and it's a shame we couldn't have had the winner decided today.

Great photos, JAK! Nice to have your presence there - we are not sure if the next play-off instalment will be back at the club. It was nice to hold it there for everyone to watch, but it was probably a bit too much to expect both players to go on and play the long tournament game straight after. So, we are having a think about what the options are.....

I believe the play-offs have so far amounted to nearly 9 hrs, and still not finished!

Classical 90+30 = 1-1 (6 hrs)
Rapids 20 +10 = 2 draws (2 hrs)
Blitz 3+2 = 2-2 (40 mins so far)

A very exciting epic so far!

I understand the difficulties and the physical pressure exerted on both players which is one more reason for all of us to congratulate them.

On the other hand due to its sporting as well as symbolic value the championship of the Club has become synonymous with it's strength and appeal to all.

At this very stage Noble Park Chess Club is one of the strongest in Australia!
Its championship reflects it's multicultural diversity and it's a pride for the whole chess and local community.

It is a major event and I was wondering if we could promote it as such, to stage it in a wider community base and might be able to get some sponsorship as well!

I am experimenting with showing the videos of the Championship playoff games captured on Saturday. The original files are large (3.5GB each) so I've had to compress them. There are four games in total - this is the first instalment. Click the picture to view the video.

Picture lovely!
Actually the noise made by the kids practicing in the next hall, wasn't as noticeable as in the video!
If I could suggest next time we have the camera strategically placed and the board set not as deep so we can actually see the moves?
For a first time initiative and effort it was just brilliant!

Centralization and framing is good.Mirror reflection is good.If game moves can be followed it is even better.Could try increased camera elevation.Good work Mike:clap:

Well, all will be decided on 18th June. On 18th June there is a lightning tournament at the club so the playoff will be played before the lightning tournament. So we will play 2 blitz games, if it's 1-1, then we play another 2 blitz games, and if it's still 1-1,then we will have one game of armageddon which will decide the club champion for 2011.
