It was a great day of chess in Maryborough on Saturday 20 November when twenty six keen chess players (13 Juniors and 13 Seniors) competed in the Tournament. The words check and checkmate were heard many times during the day. Some of the players were competing in their first tournament and using clocks for the first time. Channel Seven came to make a news story on the tournament.

In the Senior Division Keith McLeod from Bundaberg blitzed this division with a perfect eight out of eight games. He was followed by John Surridge of Maryborough with seven out of eight games. Third place with six out of eight games was Bundaberg Chess Club President John Harris.

In the Junior Division Timothy Harris of Bundaberg blitzed this division with a perfect eight out of eight games. Second place with six and a half games out of eight was Brandon Lowe of Maryborough. Patrick Harris of Bundaberg came third with five and a half games out of eight.

Director of Play for the day, Allan Menham, said this was one of two tournaments that the Bundaberg Club conducts in Maryborough each year. The tournament allows players from Bundaberg, Maryborough and Sunshine Coast to test their playing skills. It also helps to promote chess in Maryborough which now has its own chess club
