cool !

Have to start looking around at accomodation.

Good luck with the Blitz. There was a blitz tourney on the Saturday night at the recent MCC Cup weekeender and they got 5 or 6 players. Hope you can do better !

I have a list of accomodation from the last event, it is a bit old but can be used as a guide.
http://suncoastchess.webs.com/Suncoast%20Open%20Accommodation.pdf

The Blitz should be a bit of fun for those not to warn out, and those who want to stay for a beer.

Well done at the MCC Cup weekender. Equal 9th out of 61 players.

Thanks for the info Jeff.

Already starting to make some plans.

I'm not keen on blitz but I'll support the club and stay for a beer after round 3 :)

Hi Greg,
I just checked on my calendar and the weekend 26 -27 Feb is free! :)
If possible please provide some information for the interstate travellers.
What's the best way (flightways) of getting to Coolum for someone from Melbourne?
Are there direct flights to the Sunshine coast?
Closest airport to Coolum?
In the old ways we used to hitch hikes from one Coast (Gold) to the other! (Sunshine) :uhoh: but it doesn't work anymore! :P
Sometimes we ended up in Cairns hippy communes but don't tell Howie!

For our interstate travellers.

Tiger, Jetstar & Virgin airlines fly from Tullamarine to Sunshine Coast Airport (which is about 10km South of the venue). I am flying down for the Begonia Open in March with my wife for $284.60 return with Tiger airways. I believe there is now a new bus service from the airport terminal, I am unsure whether it goes North. If more details are needed let me know.

Flights also available from Sydney.

Cheers,
Jeff

Booked flights and accommodation (Atlantis Marcoola) just about a km from the venue, could have found closer but I love the walk across the beach! ;). Posting entry fee sometime next week.

Make sure you don't overstay your viza, otherwise there 'll be additional charges! :P

G'day JaK,

You'll be the 1st interstate entry for the 2011 Powell Suncoast Open.

The event will go well, we used the venue for the first time last year and it is very nice.

Thanks for the comment in your earlier post about the fact that our open (Noosa) & the Gold Coast open used to be ran a week apart, our club will keep that as a consideration in the future. We also had considered running it near one of the Redcliffe Open events.

Time of year was a factor which may have attracted you to this event. The water temp should be great and I hope you have a couple of extra days to enjoy the beach.

Cheers,
Jeff

I hope my Victorian Visa lasts for at least 10 days without extra charges.;)

Following Garrett's example I am becoming an organisational genius! :) Once I scorned over scheduling for interstate events but now I realise how right he was and how wrong I was!

LOL no worries mate, I will make sure you have an honorary Vic Visa, I am not sure about Garvo though ;) I might have to hide him from some unruly Victorians! :P
Cheers and good luck

PS Oh BTW what's the dress code for the RSL?
Kev, Rince, Jono, Eclectic, help! I forgot the rule! Is it an honour or a honour?

I forgot the rule! Is it an honour or a honour? As the 'h' is silent, the words phonetically starts with a vowel: 'o'. Language is designed for speech, so adapts around how we say things.

So it is an honour.

All Queenslanders would/should know that there is a new Grand Prix. This grand prix is "The 2011 Queensland Participation Grand Prix". It is open to all CAQ members. This Grand Prix has a prize pool of $1500 and will reward the most active CAQ members who play in Queensland weekenders. Details are in Garvinís most recent CAQ newsletter.

The 2011 Powell Suncoast Open will be one of the first tournaments that is part of the Participation Grand Prix. All participants (that are CAQ members) in this event will get 20 points plus their score in the event.

I hope that this new CAQ initiative will help (as intended) boost participation in our events.

----

On a side note entries have started coming in. Among them is JaK (who has also entered the blitz tournament), and some from our club locally.

----

Cheers,
Jeff

Hi Jeff
I am looking forward to your tournament very much indeed - it was great at Coolum last year!
Wonderful to see my old mate Bill Powell donate $200 into the prize pool - I will even buy him a beer for that!

I hope to grab plenty of CAQ INC PARTICIPATION GRAND PRIX POINTS and some ACF Under 1600 Grand Prix Points too!

Stephen Solomon is picking me up on Friday night so I should be there on time for Round 1 for a change!

I will now go and photocopy plenty of entry forms for the upcoming
46th Peninsula Open on Sat April 30, Sun May1 & Mon May 2.

Cheers & beers - especially for Bill Powell - from Mark C Stokes xxxx Gold

- Many players won Mar Bars as upset prizes - JaK was the victim of at least one of these losing to Tony Zhong (who won prizes for both his wins and his draw).

-------------------

Lots of fun was had by all. It was a beautiful weekend up here and many people enjoyed some time at the beach (before the tournament and between rounds). There was a lot of praise for the venue - quite, carpeted, air-conditioned, catering.

Hopefully full results will be posted soon and some of the players put up some of their more interesting games.

Cheers,
Jeff

A big thanks and well done to Jeff Dyer, Bill Powell and the gang up there for putting on a great tourney. Although I play down at the Gold Coast a bit, this was, I think, the first time I had played up at the Sunshine Coast since the excellent Australian Open in 1999 (and some classic Noosa Opens before that). I thoroughly enjoyed it. Great venue, friendly, relaxed atmosphere and superb weather (almost too good for playing chess...).

After the extremely disappointing and somewhat bizarre performance perpetrated on a roomful of chess players at the recent Queensland Teams Championships by the common-sense-challenged CAQ hierarchy, it was great to experience a positive, professionally run event.

Perhaps the lads at the top of the CAQ food chain could take lessons from you and Graeme Gardiner on how to move chess forward in this state, instead of finding new and innovative ways to put obstacles in its path.

I wish you well with your future events, and will continue to enthusiastically support your excellent club. Awesome job!

Cheers,

Kevin Casey

Hi Jeff
I loved the Suncoast Powell Open! All the players played with great sportsmanship and Many Mars Bars Upset prizes were given out too!
I really enjoyed catching up with Bill Powell too- maybe he will come down and play at Redcliffe on April 30!
Marilyn ran a great canteen and the venue was excellent.
Here is my quick loss to fellow Redcliffe Team mate Tony Weller- in my pet Sicilian Line too! Natasha Bortsova was kind enough to watch us analyse and check our stuff on Fritz 12!

Natasha told us Fritz 12 also liked 16 ... Qh4 with chances for both sides!

See you all at the 46th Peninsula Open at Rothwell on Saturday April 30 - it is

rumoured to have the best hamburgers on the Redcliffe Peninsula!

The CAQ is offering a Bulk Entry Fee of $150 for 3 Tournaments in a row- the

From the bottom of heart thank you to all who organised (especialy Mrssrs Powel and Dyer) and participated in the tournament, making my 5 day stay in beautiful Sunshine Coast a holiday to remember! :)
I was so busy catching waves (on a borrowed surfing board) on Sunday I forgot about different starting times and lost a game on forfeit! Excuses, excuses! :P
Thanks to all the juniors who beat me and then showed me where I went wrong! :
It was wonderful to see Boris and family! They looked so fit and happy! The young Princess is an absolutely lovely girl! :)
Nice to see Natasha, with mum and dad and little sister. Natasha was doing her homerwork during the tournament! :)
Also nice to see Jack Marton (with mum and dad and little sister too) thank God I didn't have to play him (and lose) this time! :P'
Garrett was there, Mark was there and so were many other new and old friends! Thanks for everything!
I 'll see you next year! :)
BAD NEWS: I have lost my camera where I had more than 300 pictures (inluding quite a few from the tournament)! :(
HOPEFUL NEWS: The camera was lost at the Sunshine Coast Airport! I am calling them first thing tomorrow morning to check out if it has been found.
Talk to you soon! :)

This is not coded as a forfeit in the crosstable above so if it was submitted for ratings in that form that needs to be fixed.

Hi Kevin,

How is a time forfeit meant to be displayed in swiss perfect? I have made Pat who I submitted the results to aware of the 2 time forfeits that occured.

I followed what I found in the FIDE rules see below.

Article 11: Points
11.1
Unless announced otherwise in advance, a player who wins his game, or wins by forfeit, scores one point (1), a player who loses his game, or forfeits scores no points (0) and a player who draws his game scores a half point (Ĺ).

Cheers,
Jeff

JeffThey should be shown as +:- for a white win or -:+ for a black win on forfeit.
A double forfeit should be shown as -:-.

Losses due to mobile phones are not forfeits and should be recorded normally.

The following is from the Swiss Perfect help file.

Results dialog box

This box allows you to enter match results.
You can either type in the result or click an appropriate button.

Valid results for a single game are:

white wins 1:0
black wins 0:1

If it is being run with these operating systems, then this website should fix the problem: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607.

Thanks Allan for passing that on. John Harris did very well finishing equal 2nd and got himself on the top improvers list. Hope he does well in the Queensland Championship.

Yi Liu who also finished equal 2nd got himself on the top improvers list - although results from other tournaments would have been a factor for him.
