This is always a fun tournament (with a lovely surrounding environment of landscaped, native gardens... :))
As of yesterday, there were 40 registrations to date, with a number of verbals and we're also expecting on-the-day walk ins as is traditional so it should be a good number. It's a nice chance to check out Billanook College ahead of the Australian juniors next year.

Juniors and adults of all strengths are welcome. The early bird entry closed yesterday but it's still only $20 to enter. See more details here: http://www.billanook.vic.edu.au/v2/documents/2010Chess_Classic.pdf

49 entries so far! Lots of juniors – mostly U14’s. So, there’s a big opportunity for players to enter the Open, U18 and U16 sections and win big prizes.:owned:

Entries will be taken right up until 10:00am on the day.

Hi everyone. Due to exams the Billanook Chess Classic won't be held in the usual rooms this weekend but will be elsewhere on the Billanook College campus. There's no need to be concerned, however, as the event will be very well signposted (For those who have been to weekend tournaments at Billanook in the past, you follow the signs past the usual venue, cross the bridge and turn right. It's not too far at all.)

I've been told the alternative venue is a good one and is in fact more spacious than the usual rooms.

As Ian pointed out above, this allegro event is open to chessplayers of all strengths from juniors to adults and there is a very generous prize fund as usual and many different sections.

Also, if you are keen to check out the campus where the Australian Juniors are being held in January, this would be an excellent opportunity. :)

Just a reminder that this is on tomorrow. This tourney has a very nice atmosphere and the prize money is amazingly good for an allegro. Given that there have not been many open entries, there's a good chance for chesschatters to win it if they enter!

Hope to see some of you there. :)

Thanks Watto.

Here's an idea of some of the prizes:

From the total prize pool of $2000 the main prizes will be:

Open 1st - $160
Open 2nd - $120
Open 3rd - $80

NOTE: In the Open division the prizes are minimum guaranteed prizes and are likely to be higher depending on entries.

All placegetters in each division will also receive prize money e.g. the 1st placed boy and girl in U18, U16, U14 will get $80 and the 1st placed boy and girl in U12, U10 and U8 will get $40.

NOTE: Equal placegetters will share prize money. Trophies and medallions will be determined by tiebreak.

As a small token of appreciation for Billanook College's initiatives in providing venues for very important Chess Events as well as promoting Chess in student communities, I sent earlier today the following email to their Principle Mr Roger Oates.

Dear Sir

I am writing this to express the entire Australian Chess community's gratitude for the services provided by your highly regarded educational institution for the development of the noble sport of Chess.

Billanook College has set a bright example to other organisations to support and promote Chess events.
Your gesture to provide a venue for the oncoming Australian Junior Championships as well as other important Chess events has been warmly acknowledged and commented upon by Northern Star Chess's Mrs Pearl Yung in a recent interview in Chess Chat Forum's very popular "An Interview" thread.

http://chesschat.org/showthread.php?t=5069&page=38 Post 568

I, (JaK for "Just A Knight" is my nome de plume)as the person who conducts those interviews, (interviewees include some of the strongest Australian and International players) would like to thank you on behalf of our Chess community for your application to assist our existing young champions and support the development of new ones, and to also thank you for your fine efforts and encourage you to continue this brilliant initiative for many years to come!

Faithfully yours

Elliott D. M. Renzies

to which he replied

Thanks so much for this Elliott.

We are delighted to be associated with the organisation and the sport.

Regards,

Roger Oates
PRINCIPAL
Billanook College

Cheers and good luck to all!
