Croydon’s next tournament, the Club Championship, starts this Thursday evening, the 14th October and runs for 7 rounds until the 25th November.

All rounds start at 7:45 pm and the time limit is 60 min + 30 sec. Players are advised to be present by 7:30 pm before round 1. Ian Birchall will be arbiter so the tournament is in excellent hands.

The club championship is open to all club members, including those who join on the night, however only members who joined the club before 1st July are eligible to win the ‘Club Champion’ title.

The 2009 tournament was jointly won by IM Guy West and Ian Birchall with the play off match won by Guy.
I don’t have a list of entries but Guy and myself are playing this year again.

Contact and venue details, results and games can be found on the club site: www.croydonchess.com

The first round of the club championship took place on Thursday. Boards 1 and 2 were postponed, but there was still plenty of action and upsets on the other boards:

On board 3, Dave Lacey sacrificed two pieces for a strong attack against Linden Lyons’ king. Linden found a good defensive measure, but time pressure, in a difficult position, took its toll and Dave’s attack broke through.

Jamie Cross had a comfortable win against Rodney Matthews.

Juniors, Kyle Gibson and Cameron Yung, were both not feeling well and their game reflected that with a number of errors from both sides. A draw was probably a fair result.

Herman Naude lost a piece early, but had some compensation in the activity of his pieces. John Fleming played solidly to make the extra piece count.

Pearl played solid chess against Joseph Wong, but Joseph maintained good pressure and eventually won on time in a winning position.

After a fairly even opening and middle game, Richard Goldsmith swapped down to an advantageous K & P ending against Steve Scott. Richard displayed good strategy to comfortably win the ending.

All games will appear in the 'Results' section of our website shortly.

One postponed game was played last night with Ian Birchall winning after Ion Kloprogge put up a tough fight.

Unfortunately, we've had a problem with our website being down this week. Steve Frost, our webmaster extraordinaire, has been working overtime to isolate the problem to our hosting company and then get it fixed. Our website is up and running again. thanks to Steve's efforts.

Club Championship R2 Commentary:

Round 2 in the Club Championship saw a number of good games:

Jamie’s Alapin Sicilian developed into a very tense tactical position which Guy resolved very effectively in his favour.

Joseph left his c-pawn on offer for too long and when Ian finally took it the tactical complications resulted in a quick win.

From a weaker position out of the opening, against Cameron, John gained the advantage and then executed a beautiful tactical finish to the game. Great play from John!

Kyle coordinated his pieces very effectively to dominate his game against Herman.

Aggressive play by Jean, and some good defence by Rodney, resulted in an endgame of R & 6P v R, N & 3P. Jean advanced her passed pawns and made good use of her king to win comfortably.

In a close, manoeuvring game, Pearl was doing well against Ion until she lined up her queen and king for a skewer by Ion’s bishop. :wall:

In the Junior Club Championship, Round 2 again saw all the rated players win comfortably. Kyle Gibson, Joseph Wong, Cameron Yung and George Stuyt are the leaders on 2 points. The tournament will probably be decided in the next few weeks with the rated players starting to play each other.

Sorry for the delay in publishing R3 pairings. I was waiting for some results from previous rounds to be finalised. Hi everyone,

Another tough club championship being held at Croydon this year again. However, I do want to make a special mention on here though of John Fleming who is playing a fantastic tournament.

Having played in the club championship last year, I got to play John in the first round and he is definitely stronger than what his rating does suggests.

I wish John a fantastic tournament and plenty more upsets to come in the future.

Board by Board Commentary:

On board 1, Dave held out well against persistent pressure. He lost on time just as Guy was getting on top.

After an even opening, Ian made some positional gains before John gave up the exchange and then a piece.

On Board 4, both players missed tactical opportunities in a very even battle. Richard managed to swap down into a rook ending 2 pawns ahead, but he couldn’t hit on a good plan and active rook play by Joseph saw a draw result.

After building up a dominating position, Jean had trouble finding the win and allowed Ion to show off his trademark resourceful counterplay (in other words, he swindled her).

Excellent endgame play with 2B v B+N saw Cameron bring home the point against Steve Scott.

On board 7, what was developing into a fairly even tussle, finished abruptly, when Linden took Rodney by surprise with a nice mating combination.

On board 8, Herman won a piece early and had a comfortable win against Pearl.

All games should appear in the next few days in the Results section of our website.

The Junior Club Championship saw wins to Kyle Gibson over Cameron Yung and Joseph Wong over George Stuyt on the top boards. Next week, we'll see the clash between top seeds Kyle and Joseph, both leading on 3/3.

There were a number of upsets (in RED) in R4:

1 Birchall, Ian 1764 [3] 0:1 West, Guy 2286 [3]
2 Lacey, David 1692 [2] 0:1 Kloprogge, Ion 1201 [2]
3 Fleming, John M 951 [2] 0:1 Gibson, Kyle 1517 [1.5]
4 Cross, Jamie 1554 [1] 1:0 Goldsmith, Richard 1262 [1.5]

6 Yung, Cameron 987 [1.5] 1:0 Watson, Jean 1283 [1]
7 Naude, Herman 1342 [1] 1:0 Scott, Steve [0]
8 Matthews, Rodney 1123 [0] 1:0 Yung, Pearl 685 [0]

On Board 1, Ian struggled for a plan while Guy invaded on the king-side and won easily.

A tactical error saw Dave in a difficult position and a piece for 3 pawns down in the opening. Ion made short work of it to score the biggest upset of the round.

On Board 3, Kyle gained space in the opening and used it well to out-manoeuvre John in a closed position.

On Board 4, Jamie did enough to swap into a won K & P ending, although Richard missed a chance to make it much more difficult for him.

Joseph missed chances in the opening complications allowing Linden to get a powerful passed pawn and a great position before going on to a comfortable win.

Another upset occurred when a series of seemingly innocuous moves lead to the win of a central pawn by Cameron. Jean tried to stir up some counter-play. But Cameron was too steady and he was winning comfortably when Jean gave away her Q.

Herman's good play to exploit the weaknesses in Steve’s position eventually resulted in the win of a piece and, shortly thereafter, the game.

In a fairly even battle, Rodney was just getting on top when Pearl lost on time.

NOTE: There will be no R5 draw until Wednesday, as I will be awaiting the result of a postponed game.

Board by board commentary:

B1: Guy quickly exploited Ion’s slight lack of development, uncoordinated of pieces and an unfortunately placed bishop to win pawns and gain a dominating position.

B2: Kyle had the advantage from the opening, but some inaccurate play exposed some weaknesses and allowed Ian to take the initiative. The pressure on Kyle’s position resulted in the win of a piece and eventually the game, despite Ian missing opportunities to finish off the game more quickly.

B3: In a see-sawing opening, Cameron won a piece, but then Linden won it back with a couple of bonus pawns. Linden finished off the endgame in regulation manner.

B6: Some reckless opening play from Joseph should have seen him lose a piece and the game. However, Jean was feeling overly generous and gave her queen away instead.

B7: Rodney gave up an important central pawn, allowing Richard to dominate the centre and run riot over Rodney’s position.

B8: A nicely played game by Pearl. Her plan to roll her central pawns and pressure the weaknesses in Steve’s position was very effective. The win of a key pawn using the threat of back rank mate was also a nice tactic.

As usual the games will be published on our website in the next day or so.

Round 6 pairings will be delayed until the results of postponed games are known.

Round 5 of the Club Junior Championship saw Heman put up an excellent fight against top seed Kyle Gibson. Kyle managed to find a win in a very even opposite coloured bishops ending. So, Kyle continues to lead with 5/5. Joseph's win over Cameron sees him in clear 2nd place on 4/5.

R6 commentary

B2: A game of oversights from both sides, where Jamie’s errors proved to be a little more serious than Ian’s.

B3: An interesting tactical battle, early on, resulted in Kyle gaining a queen for rook and knight. Kyle used his queen’s manoeuvrability effectively to clean up on the queen-side while nullifying Ion's king-side play.

B4: After taking the advantage out of the opening, the difference between moving his king to g8 rather than h8, allowing a vital check, cost David the game against dangerous junior Joseph Wong.

B5: After an even opening, both players missed opportunities to gain material before Richard won the exchange and then expertly steered the game to a comfortable win against Cameron.

B7: John’s queen went on an excursion to win a pawn in the opening. Pearl’s response to open up the position and make use of her advantage in development was correct, but came 2 or 3 moves too late to be effective. A couple of errors from Pearl then sealed the game in John’s favour.

B8: Positive, aggressive play by Rodney led to a winning mating attack in his game against Steve Scott.

In the Junior Championship, Kyle continued on his winning way to lead on 6/6. Second place will be decided between Joseph, Cameron, George and Ashish, all currently on 4/6.

Lyons 0-1 West

Black got a slight edge from the opening, but at the cost of Queens coming off.

Looking to complicate, I incorrectly offered the exchange for a pawn plus the bishop pair and Linden's King being a bit exposed.

Linden courageously took the exchange and was then objectively better, but with a difficult position to play in practice.

Despite this, it was me who made the next inaccuracy, and a brilliant King march up the board (courtesy Fritz) could have given Linden a big advantage. Like me, Linden thought it looked unplayable and selected a variation that allowed me to get a lot of play for the exchange.

A few moves later Linden unfortunately blundered a piece.

There was a funny incident during the game when Linden realised we weren't getting our 30 second increments and neither he, Jean, nor I knew how to fix the problem. Jean was eventually talked through the process over the phone 'blindfold' by the arbiter, Ian Birchall.

R7 Commentary

B1: Kyle was drawn into pawn moves, that left light square weaknesses and exposed his king, which Guy deftly exploited.

B2: Richard outplayed Ian in the opening, but a tactical trick turned the game and Richard’s king position was quickly overrun.

B3: Joseph chose to leave his king in the centre, while he went after material. The result was no-holds-barred, rough-n-tumble battle, but the win to Jamie was never much in question.

B4: Ion’s speculative 5.Ng5 paid dividends when Linden didn’t find the best response. Playing a difficult position, Linden used a lot of time and was under 1 minute after 30 moves. But he managed to hold on, and even had a drawing opportunity at move 55, before finally succumbing at move 60.

B5: David’s attack met with little resistance and Cameron was forced to give up considerable material to keep his king alive.

B6: After sacrificing a knight for very little in the opening, Rodney had to scramble to get a draw against John’s solid play.

B7: After an even opening and an exchange of queens, Jean tried to push for too much against Pearl and lost a piece for a pawn. She, then, managed to win another pawn to get back in the game. Pearl looked to have Jean in real trouble at one stage, with all her pieces menacing Jean’s king, but when Pearl handed back the piece, Jean’s two connected passed pawns proved too difficult to combat.
