Mark I tried to call you last night but couldn't get through. I'll pay on the day, guess I might cop a late fee though.

By the way there will be roadworks on the Houghton Highway (bridge) all weekend, so players going that way might want to allow a bit of extra time in case of delays. Depending on where you're coming from, it might be better to go via North Lakes.

All live games are OK.
However, only Gene Nakauchi and Alex Stahnke are still playing.
An interesting endgame in Stahnke's game vs Lachlan Benson (NSW) 1848.

IM Solomon sad that he was in a lost position in the endgame but Gene failed to take the advantage and win...Solo is the endgame expert, let's check it out on this video:

I've been shown how to do this a couple of times a while back, nice to see it actually in a game! (and remind me how to do it :P)

Yes well done.

That sort of position is in most endgame books. The important aspects which enabled you to draw so easily are (apart from White king cut off) that the rook has two safe squares, and the base pawn is on the second rank which stops the white queen making a pest of herself from the rear.

However, it is one thing to know the theory, and another to see it a few moves out in time pressure and play for it, so well done.

I was recently not able to recognise potential for philidor position in time trouble against Tomek Rej a few moves out which would have saved half point, even though it is one of the first positions we learn as a newbie.

cheers
Garrett.

Ah you were just a bit rusty Boris !

I've seen you demolish some very good opposition on the White side of the mainline KID.

In our game Black got underway on the kingside before White could strike on the Queenside. Maybe the slow Bc1-d2-e1-f2 was the culprit. I don't want to sound too informed though, as Fritz pointed out a few knock out blows for Black that I was so serenely oblivious to during the game.

Bring on Surfers !

Cheers

Finally, thanks to the organizers for a great tournament and arbiter Patrick Byrom by co-operating and enabling us to post all the results online.
IM Solomon was the man of the tournament chased by very strong juniors (but escaped):
FM Nakauchi 2036, Brodie McClymont 1924 and Yi Liu 1878 followed by motivated George Lester 1846.
The suprise of the tournament was Callum Gray (Junior)1362 who beat Tony Weller 1754.
Thanks to all the players who used the Monroi panels:
Craig Stewart, Brodie McClymont, Alexander Stahnke, Callum Gray, FM Gene Nakauchi, Matthew Ryan, George Lester, Tyson Walker and of course IM Stephen Solomon, without them we could not create pgn file below:

In the shoutbox during the Olympiad we were talking about how cool it was to play 0-0-0 + i.e. castle queenside with check.

Looks like Solo did that in round one, picking up a stray rook on b7 in the process !

I think you're right. Compare a popular line with Be3-f2, which can still get demolished by the classic Najdorf ...g3 sac.

Yes, Garrett, it's quite fascinating how devastating it can be with the sudden castle 0-0-0. Here is the game (see move 14 by black):

And if White exchanges queens first (13.Qxd8+) then after Bxd8 the pawn is still sort-of immune since after 14.Rxb7 Bb6 the rook is trapped and white loses the exchange.

Hi JaK. Heh heh, well, I was actually a Brisbane resident, but a loyal member of the Logan City Chess Club for about 14 years. It might be a while before I visit Australia again though, like next year maybe. Naturally my old chess club will be one of the first places on my list.

Garrett.Yeah I think you're right. Be1 should be ok keeping an eye on h4 but Bf2 trying to eye the queenside was a bit too much. Maybe I should have put the knight there instead.

I think it's just one of those lines that if you play it enough, sometimes you'll get crushed on the kingside, but sometimes you crush the opponent on the queenside. Maybe I'll get revenge on you next time. :)
