Bundaberg Sunday Children’s Chess Tournament 29 August 2010

It was a great day of chess at the U3A rooms on Sunday 29 August when nineteen children rolled up to compete in the tournament. This was the highest attendance at a Sunday tournament for a long time.

It was made all the more interesting when three of the top Maryborough School players turned up to give the local top players a run for their money. However, top player of the tournament was rising young primary school player Timothy Harris from Bundaberg who gained 6.5 games out of seven, defeating top Maryborough Secondary School Player Nathanael Tomlinson, who gained 5.5 games out of seven. Equal third place was gained by Aishwarya Preshy of Bundaberg and Anish Preshy of Bundaberg with 5 games out of seven each. Six players gained 4 out of seven games.

Bundaberg Chess Club Secretary Allan Menham said the children are improving in leaps and bounds. All the players named above will be playing in the School Team Chess Championships in Brisbane in October.

Interest in Chess at schools is steadily increasing owing no doubt to the numerous school chess clubs in the district. Members of the Bundaberg Chess Club teach voluntarily at many of the school chess clubs.
