According to many witnesses, in the final round Stephen Solomon lost by mobile phone in a winning endgame when his mobile phone rang during his game.

The Bundaberg Weekender was fortunate to have many top players in attendance. Some were I M Stephen Solomon, Jan Priborsky from Czechoslovakia (who won the tournament), Gene Nakauchi FIDE Master, and Yi Liu (who won the Junior and Senior Queensland Chess Championships). There were many other top players from around the State and Northern NSW

Of the thirty three competitors, 15 were local residents. This was great to see!!

There were many tight games and a great weekend of chess was had by all who attended.

The fifth Bundaberg Weekender will be held in August next year.

The Club sincerely thanks all those who attended, and the numerous sponsors of the tournament!!

Is Jan titled?

If this (http://ratings.fide.com/card.phtml?event=317063) is his FIDE Chess Profile then no.

Is Jan titled?

Someone mentioned something about him having the required IM norms, but needing to lift his rating.

Treat that as a rumor for now, I don't know if you can search for norms on the net or not.

cheers
Garrett.

I gave Jan a lift on Saturday morning and he told me that he had received the three required IM norms. It's also worth noting that his 2361 rating is roughly three years old (that is, gained at the age of 19) and that he has taken time off in the interim to study.

Thanks. I think I was due a good performance after some pretty ordinary tournaments over the last eighteen months.

Obviously, I was fairly lucky in my game against Solo, but I was pretty happy with the way that I played to reach a drawn endgame before my attempts to simplify backfired because Solo saw a little bit further than I did.

The Bundaberg tournament was a good tournament.

The weather was absolutely beautiful !

Ian Murray did a good job. I think this is one of the few tournaments I've played in where every round started pretty much on time.

Congrats to the winners and thanks to the organisers/ sponsors. It was always going to be interesting when two guns lobbed into town.

Will be back next year. Noticed this time there is a fishing jetty behind the motel so Friday afternoon next year will be spent down there with a rod, an esky and a few dillies if the water is salty.

cheers
Garrett.

It's exactly as David wrote. Once more, thanks everyone that I had a possibility to participate in this great tournament.
