 Thirteen children attended the Sunday Children’s Chess Tournament held at the Central State School on 25 July.

The Maryborough Players topped the placings with Nathanael Tomlinson and Brandon Lowe both winning six out of seven games for the day. Third place was gained by Matthew Riggs of Bundaberg with five out of seven games.

There were some upsets on the day. Young Timothy Harris of Bundaberg defeated top Maryborough Player Brandon Lowe and Nathanael Tomlinson was defeated by Brandon Lowe, which broke Nathanael’s run of wins over the last few Sunday Tournaments.

The Children are all anxiously waiting for Round 3 of the Wide Bay North Team Finals to be held on 20 August in Bundaberg. The winning Primary and Secondary teams from these finals are elegible to compete in the State Children’s Chess Finals at Brisbane in October.

Bundaberg Chess Club Secretary Allan Menham said the children are improving month by month and really enjoy their tournaments. Many schools in the district have very active chess clubs which meet weekly.
