Both Junta and Moulthun have agreed to play in the oz junior masters this year.

The following details are preliminary.

Proposed Dates - 25-29 September.
Proposed Venue - Charles will book the venue in Rockdale (if you played in such kind of competition in the past you should know).
Accomodation - for interstate players who need accomodation we will provide billet.
Date and time of each round - has not yet been decided. I presume the timing of 2006 event is a good guide. Please see
http://www.netspeed.com.au/ianandjan...06/Players.htm

I have checked that 25-29 September is holiday time in ACT, NSW, Queensland and Victoria. I think it is the best time to run such kind of event.

Entries:

1. Junta Ikeda 2307
2. Moulthun Ly 2283

All junior players ACF 2000+ are welcome to contact me at v.smirnov@econ.usyd.edu.au.

Will this be the same format as last year, with Young, Junior and Girls Masters?

Vlad

I am only organizing one round-robin event. If somebody else is ready to sacrifice his time and effort they are welcome.

However, if there is a lot of interest it is possible to organize a swiss for juniors who would not make it to the top tournament.

It is under 20. Is not Chris a year older than you?:)

In post #8.:)

haha yeah that was INTEREST not actually agreeing to play. And it was responding to you saying "where are you". Besides I'm seriously thinking about giving chess a break for a while...

It is under 20. Is not Chris a year older than you?:)

Probably I have no idea! Besides, you have the tournament names around the wrong way - "Young" was the highest last year followed by "Junior"...

Vlad, can I go ahead and register the Australian Young Masters with FIDE for September 25-29 as a 10-player round-robin?

I can also register the Junior Masters with FIDE if there is sufficient interest once the numbers and/or format become clearer. The nominal deadline for FIDE registration with that starting date is August 26.

Yep, sorry about that...strangely Vlad didn't spot it either when making his comment... let me get the current position, with Black to move:

Vlad: Black deviated from the original game by taking on g5 with a bishop rather than a queen. 19 N:f6 was the first move white played on his own and it happened to be the first line by rybka.

That (Smirnov-Muller) looks seriously painful to try to win. I guess maybe white can try to get c5 with Kc4 with the bishop leading the king through the hole to stop the other bishop obstructing or something, but if white wins other than on time he should apply for a job in a sausage factory.

That Ly-Nakauchi game was fantastic. Normally there's multiple missed wins in a game like that but I put it through Fritz and the nearest thing is that 30.Qd7 forces ...cxd3 and after 31.cxd3 Qxb2 (the black bishop can't be saved without dropping the rook) 32.Qxb7 white can slowly consolidate a clear exchange up. But I doubt that wins anyway. Great game by both players.

We have just had another quick visit by GM Ian Rogers who thought that Black would have retained winning chances in the Smirnov-Muller bishop ending after 38...Ke7 39.c6 Bxc6. Black's king can shimmy down the kingside, while White has to watch out for ...Bd3-b1.

In Gene Nakauchi vs Anton Smirnov, Black has just played a nice idea (according to Ian) of tempting Gene to chase the h-pawn when queenside play would seize the initiative starting with Nd7-b6:

Here is the position with White to move:

Interesting cross table. If the top four stay as the top four (does not matter about their individual position in that top four), then the winner will be decided by who has been able to beat up the bottom finishers best.

Personally that is a little disappointing to me.

Well there's still a couple of games that the top seeds have to fight out, one of them is in this round (7) with Christopher Wallis vs Moulthun Ly. Moulthun's had a slow start to the tournament but is still in with a chance to win.

Yes, apart from the fact that he is my Club mate, he is a a champion player (he just finished equal first in the Victorian Championship) a great young man, an excellent student and I know I might be a bit of an embarrassment to him with my continuous barracking but I am a bit parochial!

Junta is now giving a frown, while Moulthun is having a small chuckle in their game. Perpie and Gene are very quiet and glued to their seats. Vlad is sitting on the far side of the room checking out Opening Encyclopaedia 2010 and Peng Yu is scratching his head while Anton is in the familiar pose of getting ready to reach out for a piece...
