Fifteen children from Gladstone and Bundaberg competed in the Holiday Chess Tournament held at the U3A rooms on Thursday 8 July. The Tournament was held to give children a day of chess during the school holidays.

Young Timothy Harris continued his local Tournament successes by obtaining a grand slam score of 8 out of 8 games for the day. He was followed by Andrew Olley in second place with 6 out of 8 games, and Kieran Wallwork and Dylan Hepenstall in third place with 5.5 games out of 8 games.

To give the children more challenges during the day, they were given twenty one move chess problems to solve. Alex Peters solved 19 out of the 20 problems and was declared best problem solver of the day. This is going to be a feature at future one day tournaments for children when practicable, as it increases their analysis skills.

One of the Directors of Play for the day, Allan Menham, Bundaberg Chess Club Secretary, said the children really enjoyed the day and another one day Tournament will be held during the next school holidays. There were many close games and the children are improving their chess at each tournament in which they compete.
