Entered.
I will pay entry fee to a Croydon Club member during the Vic Open this weekend!
I enthusiastically encourage all chess players in Victoria and other states (that includes you Marcus and Lawrence - what about you Warren?) to play in this tournament. I have played twice in tournaments organised by Croydon Chess Club and I have the best memories and impressions of their hospitality, great organisation and a lovely venue close to everything!
Close to Public Transport (trains), yummy eateries and lots of parks so we can go kick a ball in the breaks!
See you all there! Don't give me the "but it's too early" excuse, time flies and better early than late! :)

As much as I would like to play in this tournament, I'll be Kuala Lumpur at the time. I very much enjoyed the Ranges tournament earlier this year, and seeing as their is a large number people who were involved in that event working at this one, I'm sure it will be a nice event to play in.:)

Hi Watto,

Please include my entry for the Guy West Classic provided, of course, I can get a pair of those mirrored sunglasses and access to the Fountain of Youth that Guy uses!

Currently, halfway through our tour of the UK. We've visited numerous friends and relatives and many places of historical interest, travelling along the south coast and now up the west side of England. After a hectic schedule, today is a rest day. So I'm sitting on the hotel terrace, looking out across Lake Ullswater, doing my emails. Here's the view(attached)!

Ian.

Ian. That sounds wonderful. Great to hear from you Ian and to get your entry too - all the way from England. :) That’s a beautiful view you have from your hotel… has made me feel a bit envious! Hope the rest of the trip goes well. (Look forward to seeing you back for 'The Frost' tournament in August :))

lol, I don’t think he has those sunnies anymore.

A general note to anyone who has registered and paid in the last day or two: thanks - I’ll send a confirmation email as soon as my email at home is back up and running (the connection has been down since yesterday but should be all okay again this weekend.) EDIT: Email is now back up.

I'm not having a lot of luck chasing the old norms so I may have to go get 2 more! + of course I'm still 12 points short of 2400, so definitely an FM at this point ...
Any tournaments that want to join Best in the West in my good books for ever are allowed to offer me free entry of course :)

Hi Jean,

I'd love to come over to the Big Island for the Classic but need to delay a decision until after a family holiday in early September - when I'll know if I've got any money left over for discretionary spending!

Cheers, Tony :)

The AFL Grand Final is on the weekend before the Guy West Classic. For those of us who feel a bit lost when the footy season ends, a weekend of chess is the perfect way to cheer yourself up! (Okay, if I'm to strive for truth in advertising I'll admit it could make you feel worse ;) but we're a very friendly club and it's shaping up to be an excellent field so it SHOULD cheer you up...)
If you wish to play in our weekender, please register online at www.croydonchess.com

Once you've had your fill of weekend chess, a week later you can be further cheered up by the Melbourne Chess Club Blitz Marathon on Sunday the 10th October. (For details on the Blitz Marathon see http://www.chesschat.org/showthread.php?t=12373)
I mention the MCC event because for a short time today it clashed with the Guy West Classic. On realising this the MCC committee made the quick decision to change their date; a decision which we deeply appreciate and has had a good result already in that Elliott Renzies can now play in both tournaments and Michael Addamo has decided to play in both as well :D:
Thanks for that Grant, now I will be playing in the Blitz Marathon, as well as the Guy West Classic
The confirmed field to date for the Guy West Classic:
FM Erik Teichmann 2329
IM Guy West 2286
Justin Tan 1978
Ian Birchall 1764
Michael Addamo 1607
Karl Zelesco 1545

Herman Naude 1342
Elliott Renzies 1317
Jean Watson 1283
Richard Goldsmith 1262

I've been asked about when players need to request a half point bye (as specified in the tournament flyer a maximum of one half point bye will be permitted for rounds 1 to 3 only.)
They need to be specified before the first round so if you are entering please think carefully about which round you wish to take a half point bye in, if any, and let us know before the tournament begins. Thanks :)

what's the record No. of participants for Croydon weeenders?
36.
Last year Croyon CC held its first weekender ever - the Khalifman in April 2009. It was an initiative of then Vice President Dougy Stones and attracted 31 players. Top place was shared by Ian Birchall and Dougy Stones on 4.5/5. Second place went to Tony Weller. We were pretty happy with how it went (as an aside, I can't remember for the life of me why Guy and I weren't in it :hmm:.) Croydon hosted a second weekender in the first week of October 2009, the Anand, which attracted 36 players and was won by IM Guy West on 4.5/5 with second place shared by then FM James Morris, Justin Tan, Lawrence Bretag and Ian Birchall on 4/5.

For 2010, we decided to just hold the one weekender. Our aim is to build it gradually into a bigger event over the years so it's a regular event players can rely on.

Hi everyone. Just recapping on the venue: Our club rooms are at the Croydon RSL at 1 Civic Square, Croydon, which is just off Mt Dandenong Road (we're near a Leisure & Aquatic Centre so if you see that, you've almost found us.)
As far as parking goes, if you drive around the Civic Square, there's plenty of parking close to the club. If you're coming by public transport, the venue is about 400 metres from Croydon Railway Station (which is on the Lilydale line.)

There are a whole lot of places to eat within easy walking distance in Main Street, Croydon ... from good cafes (Kofi Beans is a great cafe for instance) and bakeries to quick Subway type meals.

Here is the latest list of confirmed entries (good to see a spate of juniors enter in the last couple of days.) Also, just a reminder that if you'd like to save $5 on the entry fee, you have to pay your fee by this Thursday, the 23rd. You can do that online by direct bank deposit - all details at our club website. Any questions, just ask.

Hi JaK, that's fine. Look forward to seeing you in the second round.

The good news is that the TV we put in the club kitchen works - we tried it this morning while setting up. It's not an HD Plasma TV but it does the job. :)

Also, this time we have a separate analysis room (the Glenn Frost room which is part of the Croydon Library about a minute's walk from the venue around the small lake and to the left.)

I'll post a report, the full prize list and some games soon although not this evening. For the moment, I'll just say congratulations to all the prize winners, especially Bobby Cheng for being outright winner. Congratulations too to Ian Birchall, IM Rujevic, FM Teichmann and Karl Zelesco for sharing second place. (it was an exciting last round with all sorts of reversals on the top boards.) Also a huge thanks to N.Y. Wong for being our Arbiter. :)

Yes, I saw Ethan play here in January and I'm surprised his rating isn't a bit higher than 1013 already! Well it will be a lot higher very soon!

I am a little as well, but he is only 8 years old so still very young. Long time to develop.

I was going to note Ethan's strength. Last time I played at Croydon he beat me up in a blitz game. Now I don't feel embarrassed at all. :P

p.s. you asked for Guy's game against Erik. I think he forgot - sorry - but when we get back in a week he might annotate it for chesschat as it was quite an interesting game.

Hi Ian. Here is my Teichmann game for the website.

(Yes, I did look at 13...Nf4! for quite a while, but convinced myself it was too nebulous. It either wins, or goes damn close.

The Queen sac is sound, but 35...Rd8 is probably wrong. 35...f4 is fine for full counterchances.)
