Good stuff, I'm in then. It will be interesting to see if you an add to your collection of seven Open titles (I'll try and offer you some kind of a challenge!)

From the BCC blog (http://nwtaschess.blogspot.com/) the field to date is as follows:

Tony Dowden 1948
Alastair Dyer 1929
Kevin Bonham 1837
Nigel Frame 1762
Phil Donnelly 1657
Marcus Bretag 1642
Lawrence Bretag 1608
Vincent Horton 1545
David Hughes 1484
Russell Horton 1455
Dylan Kuzmic 1432
Andrew Fifield 1415
Nigel Lewis 1346
Graham Richards 1333
Mason Carter 1324
Dallas Fry 1306
James Briant 1292
Owen Short 1271
Adam Carter 1246
Tony Sturges 1123
Harrison Briant 923
Bill Chen 721
Robert Jiang 407
Shuqi Yu UNR

Total 24, which with a few days to go is very good.

I could get Mason in round 1 which would be interesting; I have only played him in rapids before, never in a full-length game.

I'll be interested to see how Bill Chen goes; I think he's quite a bit stronger than his rating.

Thanks Kevin,

It's good to see the NW players out in force again.

Alastair has to be favourite. It will be interesting to see if he can continue to be the form Tassie player of 2010.

The field is 25. From those listed above we are plus Reg Harvey, John O'Mara, Noel O'Mara and Nick Hunn and minus Phil Donnelly, Bill Chen and Shuqi Yu.

Round 1 currently in progress. One result against rating so far, Jamie Briant win against Lawrence Bretag. Could be another barring blunders as Graham Richards just went exchange up in the ending against Nigel Frame. Dowden vs Fifield, V Horton vs A Carter (which is interesting) and N O'Mara vs Hughes the others still going.

Do you mean you are posting while your game is still on?

Of course not (as explained in shoutbox).

Bear in mind I am only a spectator here so I'm not wired to the SP files the organisers are using. First round results:

Dowden 1-0 Fifield
Lewis 0-1 Dyer
Bonham 1-0 M Carter
Richards 1-0 Frame
M Bretag 1-0 Fry
J Briant 1-0 L Bretag
J O'Mara 1-0 Short
A Carter 1-0 V Horton (Wing Gambit strikes)
Hughes draw N O'Mara
Sturges 0-1 R Horton
Harvey 1-0 H Briant
Hunn 0-1 D Kuzmic
Jiang 1 bye

round 2 draw

Harvey - Dowden
Dyer - Richards
D Kuzmic - Bonham
J Briant - M Bretag
Jiang - J O'Mara
R Horton - A Carter
Frame - Hughes
N O'Mara - L bretag
V Horton - Fry
Fifield - Short
H Briant - Lewis
M Carter - Sturges
Hunn 1 bye

Kevin Bonham
12-06-2010, 05:58 PM
Harvey - Dowden 0-1
Dyer - Richards 1-0
D Kuzmic - Bonham 0-1
J Briant - M Bretag draw (finished as two rooks and rook pawn vs two rooks)
Jiang - J O'Mara 0-1 (OCB ending with O'Mara two pawns up, perhaps holdable with perfect technique and knowing there was a chance to draw)
R Horton - A Carter 0-1 (also OCB ending, I think this one was a forced win but Adam had to play very well to convert it. Earlier he had been winning by more)
Frame - Hughes 1-0
N O'Mara - L Bretag 0-1
V Horton - Fry 1-0
Fifield - Short 1-0
H Briant - Lewis 0-1 (very close, was Q+3Ps+OCBs each but sort of position where blunders are always possible)
M Carter - Sturges 1-0 (nice mate in 19 moves Tony tells me)
Hunn 1 bye

Here's Dyer-Dowden round 4. As I believe they are going to annotate the game themselves (not necessarily for publication!) I give only the moves, suffice to say both had serious winning prospects at various times but time trouble resulted in a draw (they had about 1 min each plus increment when draw agreed).

Alastair Dyer is the new Tasmanian Lightning Champion. Defending 2006-9 champion Tony Dowden was defeated by Vincent Horton in round two. Alastair took the outright lead by beating me in round 4. In a complex position where I had had quite a nice attack, I picked up my f-pawn then realised it was protecting my bishop on e3, which was attacked by his queen. Instead of realising that my rook on h3 was also defending said bishop, and hence playing f4, I wrongly decided I was losing a piece no matter what and played f3?? double-unprotecting my bishop. :wall:

By round six, Alastair's dominance of the event was so advanced that he was downfloated to play a player on three, there being only four other players above 50% and him having already beaten all four!

A picket fence was prevented by a gallant round 8 effort by Mason Carter who had the better of his draw with Alastair but that draw was also enough to put Alastair over the line, with Lawrence Bretag second and Tony Dowden third.

NB re the following crosstable: my copy of SP inserts a fictitious blank round 5 (there were really 9 rounds not 10). Also the rating list used to seed the field was a slightly outdated main-list as that was what was readily to hand when the organisers were keen to get underway on time.

Alastair Dyer is the new Tasmanian Lightning Champion. Defending 2006-9 champion Tony Dowden was defeated by Vincent Horton in round two.

Congratulations Alastair, a worthy champion

My loss to Vincent was my first blitz loss in five years of Tassie Lightnings. Alastair then backed up by comprehensively outplaying me two rounds later.

I also drew with KB in a tragi-comic last round game where Kevin played the cunning 1.Nc3!? which morphed into a kind of Sicilian. After not realising for more than 20 moves I had blundered a piece, I found the ending wasn't as 'winning' as I'd thought. With time ticking down KB immediately blundered a piece back then I let him take all my pawns! I put it down to one part old age (I used to find it so easy but now it is so hard!!) and the other part the predictable result of squeezing a blitz tournament into the end of Day 2 after five punishing rounds of 90/15.

5/0. Hobart club may try 3/2 or 4/2 next time we run it.

Last round of the Open featured an excellent "grandstand finish" with the last two games going being the top two boards Fifield - Dyer and M Bretag - Dowden. Both Dowden and Dyer prevailed, Dowden from what may well have been a losing position (I have the game but have yet to look at it in detail) and Dyer finally converting a drawn rook ending when Andrew didn't have the technique to hold it at a 15 second increment. (It ended up as a KR vs KRP. Earlier with three pawns each it looked completely drawn except Alastair found a very nifty zugzwang-type trick).

It is the second win of the Open title for both Dowden and Dyer; both previously tied for first with yours truly in 2007 and 2009 respectively. It also means Alastair has won both Championship title and the Open two years in a row, albeit mostly tied, and he is the first player to do this in two different years, let alone consecutively. Well done Alastair! Alastair is also the second player to win the Championship, Open and Lightning all in the same year (Tony Dowden did this in 2007). Still waiting to be claimed is the feat of winning both Championship and Open outright in the same year.

Apart from =1st and =3rd prizes were awarded for U12 (Mason Carter), U1400 (Jamie Briant), U1700 (shared between Marcus Bretag, Vincent Horton and John O'Mara). U18 was pooled into =3rd. Tony Sturges again made a donation to increase the junior prizes. (I would have pooled U1700 into =3rd as well but that said for me to win any money at all from this particular weekend is probably enough of a travesty as it is!)

Andrew Fifield and Jamie Briant were the junior stars of the tournament (now that Alastair is arguably an ex-junior) and when they get the experience and match toughness to be better at holding difficult games under pressure on the big boards in the final rounds, look out!

With time ticking down KB immediately blundered a piece back then I let him take all my pawns.

Yes, what finally happened at the end to this rather pitiable game was that Tony decided to abandon his bishop for a won ending with three pawns against a knight, which was a good idea but hopping around nimbly with knights in the ending is the one thing I can still do when exhausted, and I just managed to mop up two of them and hold the third on the seventh rank.

I also won a very drawn knight ending against Vincent despite him missing an illegal move claim.

Incidentally I noticed a very similar rook ending was held on one of the top Vic Open boards.

I have to say I was absolutely dead in the water before pulling off a sneaky swindle! At one point I lost concentration completely and missed Marcus' next move three times in a row. (We are playing again in the Club champs this Wednesday which will be interesting).

Again, congratulations to Alastair Dyer    He is the form player of 2010 on the Tassie circuit and it is simply a matter of time before he breaks 2000 and cements his status as the top-ranked Tasmanian.

I must admit, if instead of chasing your B with the weakening 33.h3, he had first confined it with 33.f5, I'd like to know myself what Black could do.

Back in NZ Championship days, you would have found 27.Nxe6!! like a shot in that position against KB.

Agreed Jono. I was (completely) lost against Marcus. I felt like resigning after 30.Qd4! but sniffed slight swindling chances. 34.f5 is obviously still winning but Marcus was shocked that he'd missed my reply of 34...Rxg3 and played the 'obvious' but fatal 35.e5?

You are too kind - I miss lots of tactics these days! Interestingly, I correctly analysed the Nxe6 sac against Kevin but only from a line where my knight went to c5 first. But it simply didn't occur to me on move 27.

Tony, I remember you were asking if we could come one more time to Tassie. We are thinking about coming to play in the Hobart weekender in the middle of August. Can you make sure that the strong field will be there?
