Considering playing in this event this year, so I am wondering from the information on the CV website and looking at results from last year. With 90+ players and 7 rounds, are accelerated pairings used?

Who knows? If you are absolutely against playing in an accelerated tournament, then it could be a risk as it may very well be accelerated.

Then again, if you're just happy to play chess, and are glad that some organisers are putting a tounament together, then just play:)

Queen birthday weekend (12-14 June this year).
It is FIDE rated. According to Chess Victoria website (http://www.chessvictoria.netfirms.com/10_vic__open_championship.htm) it will be held in Box Hill.

Who knows? If you are absolutely against playing in an accelerated tournament, then it could be a risk as it may very well be accelerated.Hehe, I want the acceleration :) . Also would like the acceleration to be done correctly ie not just removed after two rounds blindly.

If there is no acceleration, then I will probably go back to Sydney for the Under 1600 there.

I have not played in an accelerated weekender before with large numbers, so I want to get some idea of the playing differences so I have more knowledge about the practicals of acceleration as both a player and arbiter.

The Vic Open to the best of my recollection has not been accelerated before.
Last year the arbiter stated that he might accelerate the pairings if there were more than a 100 entries. There have never been more than 100 players.
If there are this year it will be a big day for Victorian Chess

Lost is not a great nom de plume for an arbiter, but if you are serious and wish to be considered you will have to contact the tournament organiser under your real name and with details of your qualifications. Regards Gerry

Please note that Victorian Open 2010 is Category 4 Grand Prix tournament (not category 3 as reported on your website ).

Could you please make the necessary adjustments.

Best regards,

Hello Leonid

Yes, there is an outstanding invoice for the $300 GP fee.

But yesterday I came across an entry form which I picked up at Ballarat.
Based on this form I changed the Vic Open from Class 4 to 3.

Now I will change it back again but please pay the fee soon!

Best wishes

With just about two weeks before the official opening of the Tournament and with a couple of days remaining for the early bird expiry date and according to latest figures published in the Absolutely Remarkable Page...
Less than one third of the actual No. of the 2009 Vic Open entries have entered the tournament.
Is it due to the 2010 Football World Cup the opening stage of which coinsides with the Open's weekend?
Is it due to lack of proper promotion on behalf of the organisers?
Is it due to lack of proper promotion on behalf of Clubs?
Is the rumour regarding general tendency of players not showing enough enthusiasm to renewing memberships this year true of false?
Is it just me?

I could be wrong but I'd guess it's just due to most players preferring to enter a bit later. Most will be locals so they don't have to sort out flights and accommodation, they just have to turn up.

I hope so Jean!
Thank God there was some movement in the station tonight! I witnessed Rad entering as well as a No. of parents entering their kids but I can't give a specific No. since I had to make sure I would't be knocked out by another junior in the tournament.
I estimate the No. of people entering earlier tonight to be about (or maybe slightly more than) 10!
All I am interested is Nos. of entries.
Give me more than 93 (No. of entries last year - exluding dropouts) and I will be very happy, to the tune of a $100.00 donation to the organisers to use as they see fit!
Equal 93 and I will be happy!
Over 80 ok still a good size!
Over 70 acceptable!
Under 70 from indifferent to unhappy depending on the actual No.

Good evening JaK,
Sorry, but i will be not able to come to the Victorian Open, even if I would like to visit Melbourne and visit your chess clubs. I am definitely not going to miss next one. Reason is that all my Family suppose to come with me but my daughter is going for a school trip and she can't forgive me if she is going to miss nice Holiday in Melbourne.
However, she has written a poem for you and Victorian open participants:

Play chess, love chess, live chess.
I want a challenge, it's like an obsession.
The time to get stronger, time for aggression.
The black and white checkers on the board looking
at my score sheet, all ruffled and tored.
I want be a master, I want get there faster. Too bad,
there is no easy way, apart from playing night and day.
Every day I feel wiser as I play on ICC. I am training
for the tournament and this programm is the Key.
Chess brings me harmony, it's like my breath of life,
chess is best of all,
Especially when in strife.

Hi James, there will be World Cup and Footy games in the duration of the Tournament, we demand that you exercise your undisputable IM powers  and irresistable personal charm, to convince the organisers to have TV monitors installed in the analysis Room. I will be there supporting the move! :)

Thanks:)

It was a pleasure to be at the tournament, it was both strong and friendly with lots of interesting chess, hats and scarfs.

Well done to both Erik and Bobby - another Vic Open title for the former, and (I expect) the first of a fair number for the latter.

Congratulations to all involved in the making of this great memorable tournament!
80+ players fought galiantly and in the true spirit of the game for 3 days in the hospitable and warm environment of the Box Hill and Canterbury Juniors Chess Club!
The congratulatory notes list is long!
First of all to the organisers!
CV officials and the BHCC stalwarts co-operated fully in order to run things smoothly and successfully!
Gerry Hartland - the official arbiter, assisted in a couple of instances by Marcus Raine, asserted his popular style of direction on a co-operative chessplaying lot!
Trevor Stanning - co-operated with Gerry in all aspects of keeping things in order including the difficult task of your DGT transmission during rounds!
Members of the BHCC and CJCC committees including mums and dads who were rostered for canteen duties and other tasks (including the very popular provision, preparation and serving of yummy goodies in the end of the tournament) so important in staging such an important event.
Notable visitors such as the Presidents of ACF and CV Mssrs Gary Wastell and Leonid Sandler, Chesskids reperesentatives Mssrs IM Robert Jamieson, Carl Gorka, officials of other Clubs and others.
An incredibly heart warming and friendly atmosphere exhibited by juniors of all Clubs. The kids analysed, playerd, joked and encouraged each other in a great spirit developed and promoted for so many by more senior members!
The joint winners of the main event FM Bobby Cheng (who actually made a short and to the point speech  - well he only said "thank you" but that's an improvement of Bobby's very laconic standards :) - and IM Eric Teichman who congratulated the organisers as well as a the catering staff in his address! :)
The last couple of weeks before the staging of the tournament, I agitated, criticised, screamed, provoked, cried and in gererally tested the organisers' patience (not excluding my dear friends Gerry, Trevor and Leonid) in many ways.
My goal was to encourage participation and add as many behinds on seats as possible! If I overdid it with my melodramatic overtones I sincerely apologise! I totally deserve the stern - yet friendly and understanding as well as humorous dressing I received throughout the tournament.
An extra  for Gerry, who apart from his other duties during the tournament kept us informed providing details of the tournament through the CV's website http://chessvictoria.netfirms.com/news_and_results.htm
Last but not least a big  to Carl Gorka for blogging live the tournament and thanks for airing yours trully thoughts in a short but meaningful interview which you will find on Carl's blog link provided below in my signature!

Nice to see so many rating group prizes. Even an IM could win a rating group prize!

Were the games recorded for live transmission archived anywhere? I can't see them on the CV or BHCC sites but I may be looking in the wrong place.
