The return of the Suncoast Open is certainly a welcome addition to the CAQ calendar. I really do hope that players will support the return of the Suncoast Open like they did in years past.

Information is on the CAQ website here: http://www.caq.org.au/htm/2010SuncoastOpenEntryForm.pdf

I would like to start a list of players who are considering playing in the Suncoast Open. This may help interest other players if there is someone on the list they would like to play in a tournament with. The list will include name and rating. If you would like to be included on this list please e-mail me or post it on this thread. I will then post the list on this site and our clubs website. I would also update the list with confirmed entries.

Cheers

Directions are now posted on the clubs website for people travelling from Caloundra, Brisbane or Bundaberg.

I have started a player list. The list has been created to create additional interest in the tournament. I have left off players names & changed there rating to the nearest 100. With location I have used Suncoast & Other.

The list has been done this way to protect the players, as naming them could make them a target for thieves. Players may choose to list their correct details if they wish, as I have.

Just wondering if the prizes estimates are correct ... 60 entries @ $40 a pop would be $2400 not $1200.

Prizes estimates & Prize categories: Prize Pool for 60 entries estimated at $1200. May be more or less due to sponsorship/costs /entries.
1st Place: 33% of Prize Pool. ($396 on estimate prize pool from 60 entries)
2nd Place: 15% of Prize Pool. ($180 on estimate prize pool from 60 entries)
3rd Place: 10% of Prize Pool. ($120 on estimate prize pool from 60 entries)

Just wondering if the prizes estimates are correct ... 60 entries @ $40 a pop would be $2400 not $1200.

They were an estimate, I think I underestimated the potential prize pool for 60 players, see below.

Income for 60 entries @ $40 does equal $2400, but expenses are taken from this.

DOP, Venue & Other expenses. Roughly $600

Rating fees CAQ $5per person, 60playersx$5 = $300

ACF $0.60 per game = $0.60x7gamesx60players/2 = $126
Not to sure about this one in my original calculations I used per person per game not per game. If it is per game not per person per game, then I was out by double on the ACF rating fee. If so the estimate prize pool for 60 players should be increased by $126.

Estimated Prize pool (for 60 players) = $2400 - ($600+$300+$126+$40) = $1334

Prize Fund $1,334
1st $440
2nd $200
3rd $133
Rating G1 $107
Rating G2 $107
Rating G3 $107
Rating G4 $107
Under 18 $67
Under 14 $67

Lucky Door Prize $40 (for survey participants)(amount to be decided)

I am still seeking sponsors & hope to cover cost/ increase prizes with sponsorship.

I am expecting to receive some donated new chess books signed by the author. These books will be used as prizes in the tournament (i.e. Best Upset, Brilliancy)

I hope the structure of the tournament prizes does not put any one off from entering. It has been set up this way as no profit (hopefully no loss), so we can ensure its future.

If anyone not attending could please send me an e-mail (suncoastchess@gmail.com) to let me know what we could do to improve the tournament I would appreciate it. For those attending we will be conducting a survey (with a chance for prize (TBA)) to see what players require in a tournament.

I've got a resort "Seacove Resort" to offer discount rates for the weekend. They are only 150m from the venue. They have also added a prize to the tournament - two free nights for two people, to be used in 12 months.

Attached is a PDF file with a updated list of accommodation available.1473

Early entries received up until last Tuesday = 5, plus 2 players that I know of that have booked accommodation.

A local state MP (Steve Dickson) has pledged $100 that will go towards the prize pool.

The venue operator has organized to have a caterer at the event, I hope to get a list of what food items and how much soon. This also means that no food from outside the venue will be aloud. I will change this on the entry form ASAP. The venue operator has given the chess club a large discount on using the venue of over 35%, so I hope that many players will support their catering.

Also the club received 5 signed (by Kevin Casey) copies of Australian Chess Brilliancies to be used as prizes in the tournament.

Early entries received up until last Tuesday(11/05/2010) = 11, plus 10 players that I know will have their entry in shortly.

All setup costs have been met with donations and the anticipated CAQ subsidy of $250 for running a Grand Prix Event. So all entry money will boost the prize pool after rating costs are met (so about $33 per player into the prize pool).

Support has been received from:

A past club player & president who has stepped down from playing competitive chess has donated $300 (Bill Powell).

A local state MP (Steve Dickson) has donated $100.

The venue operator has organized to have a caterer at the event. This also means that no food from outside the venue will be aloud. The venue operator has given the chess club a large discount on using the venue of over 35%, so I hope that many players will support their catering.

Also the club received 5 signed (by Kevin Casey) copies of Australian Chess Brilliancies to be used as prizes in the tournament.

The Seacove Resort - discounted their prices & donated a prize.

Early entries received up until today(19/05/2010) = 22 paid, plus we are expecting some other players who I have spoken to have their cheque in the mail.

Of the players who have paid
Rating >1500 = 9 players (one who scraps in just over 2000)
Rating >1000 & <1500 = 6 players
Rating <1000 or UNR = 7 players

Hi Jeff and Finn Great to see that the Suncoast Open is back! Great to see Bill Powell has put in $300 to bolster the prize fund! Tony Weller, Michael Cashman and Guess Who are coming up on Saturday to raid your prizes!
Cheers & beers xxxx Gold!
PS This is my first ever Chess Chat Chat!

Best guess for entries at the moment, is 34/35, with 27 paid entries so far & 8who have contact with me directly or on chess chat.

If all of the 35 players turn up the rating spread would look like this & the prizes pool should be over $1200 with first prize around $400.

Rating >1800 = 7 players (one who scraps in just over 2000)
Rating >1500 & <1799 = 8 players
Rating >1200 & <1499 = 4 players
Rating >1000 & <1199 = 7 players
Rating <1000 = 4 players
Unrated = 5 players

And I am happy that Mark Stokes first Chess Chat Chat was on this thread, and wish him good luck in winning (raiding) a prize, in my current list he would be the 14th ranked player.

Cheers all, it will be a good little tournament.

Garvinator thank's for being so prompt!!!I am sure there are heaps of other's like myself who couldn't make it to the sunshine coast, but we still have a interest as to what's happening at the tournament.By your reporting we are informed and it's the next best thing to being there.well done and thank you.And of course for next year you are going to mark the tournament on your calendar as a must play event, right ;) So you can turn yourself from a sideline spectator into an on the day competitor. Results are much better viewed from the tournament hall :)

Congratulations to Gene Nakauchi for winning this tournament a point and a half ahead of the field !!

2nd= were Lovejoy, Lester, Weller, and Duffin.

Kevin Casey's books went to the 5 biggest upsets for the tournament (had to be at the closing ceremony).

Michael Lawrence won the lucky draw prize.

I can't remember all the details of the rating groups but don't anyone take it personally, I forgot a lot of my opening lines too !

Well done to Suncoast Chess Club for reinstating their tournament. It was a nice weekend, hopefully even better next year !

cheers
Garrett.

Allan, I'm assuming that you're trying to mkae the point that the BCC members should have been better represented at this event. The BCC membership is a new one as most of the long-standing members have rolled over in the last 18 monthso or so.

Of BCC's longer-standing members, they are quite active in other non-home tournaments, such as Gold Coast events. Our president has all but ceased competitive chess despite contributing hugely to chess admin at a state level. Our secretary fits the profile raised in sentence one of this para. Our tournament director was the Suncoast DOP, and I spent a pre-planned session in hospital with my son on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

I was happy to let your first post stand as you weren't a serial carper. However now you have some facts regarding both the old-school and new-school members of the BCC, perhaps you can turn your commentary to focus on the positive aspect of the Bundaberg attendance and stop double-guessing the membership of the BCC.

Carry on!

Allan's main point from speaking to him on the weekend is that for quite a lot of the time Bundaberg often gets asked when are their players going to start travelling to other tournaments. So the point of comparison was fair enough. Another question can be, where were all the club players generally for this tournament?

It does need to be said though that there are two distinct playing populations up here, those that attend club chess and those that play in 'weekenders'. They rarely mix and very few play in both.

Dribbling-Chessical-Muddling-Twaddle that begs the question. You should both be sentenced to dinner with Wayne Swan and Kevin Rudd for a good puking to help clear your brains.

I was unaware that people in Bundaberg were being asked if they were going to travel to play in the big smoke; but their having been pestered? to do so (apart from being inappropriate) is not a reason for the reverse to occur (viz Bundy people carping that Brissy people should travel).

That said, even if it were appropriate/ intelligent and so forth (it still ain't, but even if it were) the issue would be one of capacity and inclination to travel and so forth. My earlier post clearly illustrates that club membership profiles are invariably fluid, and at the moment the BCC membership is largely brand new (and low-rated) and flat-out attending their local club. The fact that Bundy, in its life-cycle and with its present membership profile, was able to send four is great, but drawing a corollary with BCC is twaddle (for the reasons outlined).

Any more mindless dribble on the subject and I will start emailing you both random Kevin 07 campaign mugshots.

I think local tournaments shouldnt expect people to travel over an hour to get to their events, if they do then thats a bonus.

They need to have the players come from there local areas.

To give the BCC Members a chance to compete in a local Grand Prix Tournament, why does the BCC not consider conducting a two day GP Tournament.? That would certainly promote chess interest in the Brisbane Chess Club amd the Brisbane area

How do you know we haven't? Best start another IMO.

Back to the topic of this one, I played in a Suncoast once and enjoyed it tremendously. Family circumstances since 2003 prevent me from playing all weekenders unless my family is in tow. Adelaide 2009 was an exception.

Well done Tony & Mark, you certainly did raid the prizes!

Of the $1200 that went in prize money, only $50 went to Suncoast players, I hope we can pick our game up and take more next time.:owned:

I would also like to say that the juniors did exceedingly well taking $620. Not bad when they only make up 8 of the 33 entries (5 of them taking prizes including Gene on 1st).

Coming from you mate, this and your other anti-whinging comments are like a red flag to a bull.

Have you learnt how to set up a room full of chess sets yet?

I have played at Suncoast more often than you mate!

You remind me of Michael Baron - only playing when you have a chance of winning something (eg Adelaide).

You remind me of Brian Jones, Lee Jones and Nancy Jones waving their titles around with great pride :D but forgetting to add chess ability to them. Brian, I think if you play only if you have a chance of winning - you will not have many tournaments to play and will end up playing in senior events only....particularly if they are held far away from where Rujevic and Hamilton live :)

Yeah, I thought you'd played in Adelaide more than once... coming this year also? It's in a warmer location than last time ;)

As for the Suncoast Open, well done to the organisers keeping chess alive in this little pocket. I played this in 2001 at Noosa, when, on a hitchiking adventure, I was spotted by JONO who was driving to the event and ended up staying with him in a motel, after spending a couple of days on the beach. I think there were about 60 entrants and Solo won.

I'm not sure I'm going to make it to Adelaide this year. 2010 has been insanely busy on the work front. One project is a national one that may allow me to play in ad hoc tournaments around the country. Then again, I may only be interstate on week days. We'll see.

There was one at their premises on Australia Day weekend but it may not have been sponsored by the BCC (Hamish Selnes was one backer), although the CAQ is behind your tourney in August so it doesn't really matter does it.
