Oh, I see. Well, welcome back. Ranges CC is a good club – should be a nice tournament to play in. :) I'd consider playing in this one except that we'll be away.

Last Tuesday night (13/4) our second Ranges Invitational Open Tournament got off to an exciting start with thirty-two entries for this seven round Swiss.

The competition will be run over the next six Tuesdays from 7.45pm. It was encouraging to have seven participants from other clubs come and join in to take on our adults and advanced juniors.

A Game-time for each player of 60 minutes plus 10 seconds each move helps avoid a very late night for juniors but it is still long enough to earn ACF rating points. And Dr G only had to give out one 'speeding ticket' ! It was very pleasing to see how the juniors got the message about slowing down. The quality of the games lifted with some going right down to the wire, resulting in tight finishes.

Cameron Foo made Top Seed Don Machell work hard for his win and the same can be said of Karl Zelesco's game against second seed Ian Burchall. Two other hard fought games were Carla's v Manny (with Manny eventually winning) and Simon Whitehead v Denise Lim which came down to a winning endgame for Denise.

Here are the results of Round 1 followed by the draw for Round 2:

I would just like to say that the Ranges Chess Club is a very friendly club. Its got good facilities and is a really cosy place.

Now onto the Round 2 pairings. Playing another junior, but not just any junior but a Australian Grils Junir Champion, Denise Lim, means I will be in for a tough game. Just another quick comment on the junior side of things, the RCC have a good set-up structure for there programs as well. Well done to the committee of RCC.

Thanks Jamie - we will probably need to make it a bit cosier and turn on the heating for the next few weeks (months?). We had enough bods to keep the place warm enough last Tuesday! I am glad you found us in the dark, even though you must have walked right past our new sign.

In the second round of the Ranges Chess Club Open last Tuesday (21/4) the advanced juniors again showed that they are not scared to take it up to the adults. Eight year old Ethan held Manny to a draw, and young Cameron Foo also gained the half point against Tom.

In other junior v adult games Damar resisted strongly against Don before losing in the endgame, Denise gave Jamie Kenure a scare before losing on time, and Dylan launched a successful attack against Marieke's king.

Here are the results of Round 2 but with one game postponed (David v Nadia). As soon as this result is decided I will post the draw for Round Three.

We were also pleased to have 2 late entrants (Elvis and William) to boost our numbers to 34. Welcome to you both.

Hi Shump,

There was a bit of a scare in the game from Denise Lim, but with everything swapped off and me having the pass pawn it should be winning. I will add though there was a missed tactic from Denise where she could have forced mate in 7 or 8. Very lucky to escape this win and just by looking at the draw for next round, there should be some exciting chess on the top boards.

Just like to say that the club is very friendly and I would recommend chess players to get down there and check it out the club.

Until then I will see you all down there this tuesday night.

Scott's upset win against Ian in time pressure has put Don back in poll position in the race to the finish line, so their match up in the final seventh round this Tuesday (25/5) will be decisive.

Tearing up on the outside is 10 year-old Karl following his win against Yew Sze. Karl's game against Paul will now be crucial in deciding the placings and the Top Junior award because Damar and Cameron are close behind. The trophy for the Top Female Award looks within Denise's grasp but also depends on how she fairs against Yew Sze and upon whether Marieke can pull off an upset win against Frits.

An intriguing way to finish what has been an exciting, evenly matched competition!

Congratulations to Don Machell from Dandenong Chess Club who won the two rooks verses queen ending against Scott to become the outright winner on 6 out of 7 in the 2010 Ranges Chess Club Open.

Ten year old Karl Zelesco showed how rapidly he is improving by cleverly winning the endgame against Paul and coming second on 5.5. Paul was equal 3rd on 5 points with Ian, Scott and Jamie Cross.

In the Junior Awards, Denise Lim top scored on 4.5 and won the Girl Trophy and Damar Bull-Quijano, on 4 points, won the Junior Boy Trophy, sharing the prize money with 8 year-old Ethan Lim also on 4.

Special congratulations to the junior club members who weren't daunted by having to play against the adults and produced some exciting games. The youngest was 7 year-old Calvin Foo who ended up with two fine wins.

Ranges has enjoyed the company of seven visitors from other clubs and this has helped to make the tournament a very pleasant and gripping contest. We hope that even more visitors will come and enjoy our mountain hospitality at next year's Open Invitational.
