Dated Tuesday 9 March: "At an Extraordinary Meeting of the Members of the the Manly-Warringah Rugby League Club Chess Club held last night, it was agreed to sever the relationship with the Manly-Warringah Rugby League Club and re-locate the Chess Club at the Mounties/Harbord Diggers Club at 80 Evans Street, Freshwater. The new Chess Club will be named Harbord Diggers Chess Club and will become a Sub-Club of the Mount Pritchard RSL Club Group.

After more than 25 years with the MWRLC it was disappointing that this decision had to come, but the background to the matter is that over 12 months ago the MWRLC sold its Land and Building at 563 Pittwater Road, Brookvale and the new owner has closed the first floor of the building completely and the MWRLC now rent the ground floor and the small mezzanine floor. The function rooms and Auditorium on the first floor are no longer available to the Club and to the Sub-Clubs.

MWRLC relocated the Chess Club to the rear section of the mezzanine level and last year we operated the Chess Club and participated in the Grade Matches in that area. The adjoining bar area closed at 7.30pm, and whilst there was a certain amount of noise, we managed okay.

This year the area we had last year has been taken over by the "Poker" and the bar stays open to late and Chess Club has been re-located to the Lions Den which is an area closer to the bar, and has the TAB, Pool Tables, Darts, Fox TV all in the same area. The noise is considerably worse. Also when the Manly-Warringah Rugby League team has a home NRL game at Brookvale Oval, the Chess Club cannot use the area and has to cancel or use an annexe next to the Bingo. The first NRL home game is next Monday night, i.e. 15 March 2010.

The Committee realised that there is no way that Manly Chess Club could participate in the Inter-Club competition in the environment allocated to us and also members were subjected to the noise in all our general tournaments. Our membership has declined and members have been complaining about the noise factor.

The bottom line is that the MWRLC does not have sufficient room or the facilities to provide a quiet environment for serious chess. Poker and Bingo have larger following and take priority over chess. After looking at other venues the Committee recommended to Members that the Chess Club be re-located at the Harbord Diggers Club and the members accepted the Committee's recommendation.

The Harbord Diggers Chess Club commences operations next Monday night (15 March 2010) at Freshwater. (For those Council Members who do not know, the name of the suburb of Harbord was officially changed to Freshwater, but the Harbord Diggers Club's name has not changed).

The Chess Club will be located in the Kahanamoku Room which is a Functions/ Wedding Reception area on the Eastern side of the first floor overlooking the ocean.

The Harbord Diggers Chess Club will be entering teams in the Inter-Club competition.

The Committee will remain the same with Martin van Elmpt or me being the contact persons.

Regards

Tom Accola
Harbord Diggers Chess Club Secretary."

I think this is self-explanatory. I certainly noticed the noise issue. Note also that Harbord Diggers Club has disabled persons access which MWRLC was unable to provide on the Mezzanine Floor level in the last Little Board Match played against norths. Goodbye Manly-Warringah Leagues Club Chess Club. Hello Harbord Diggers Chess Club!

Its sad..... its happening at Campbelltown too..... we are now into a committee room that if we get many more than 12 people we'll be a bit squashed and would not be able to fit more than 18 players in the room.....

Another worry is that the Campbelltown Catholic Club has apparently given the marching orders to the Snooker club, Judo Club, the Saturday Bridge Club (although they still have Tuesdays and Thursdays....) and not sure what else.

Worrying times......

Poker. Poker is the biggest pain in the backside of Club chess and chess in general. We've changed our nights to a Tuesday night from a monday night due to the wretched poker.... got one player back...... just need to spy the others........

Went to HDCC tonight. Nice quiet room with a great sea view - a great contrast to the last Manly leagues club venue we had. Come and see on Monday nights!

The HDCC web site has now progressed niceley (thanks, Mokum!) and can be found at http://www.harborddiggerschessclub.org.au/

As posted on the norths cc 2010 thread, HDCC have won their inaugural match against another club, beating norths 11.5 -8.5 in the first leg of the "Little Board" match. This 2-leg match used to be played between norths and Manly CC and features opponents of approximately equal rating playing each other. 20 boards for their first inter-club match, and winning that match, was a great effort by HDCC!
