Looking at historic chess records is always a very exiting and enjoyable task. Would be great to know more about the past champions. I had a pleasure of meeting some of them over the chessboard (Kable,Maydan, Craciun) - I hope that all of these great players (and extremely nice and friendly people) are still well and have not given up on chess completely. If anyone is still in touch with them - please pass my best regards and warmest wishes.

First Round of the Championships at the Box Hill Chess Club, having finished my game vs young Sam Gluzman I am heading for the exit, when the Publisher nods to me and in his usual polite yet firm whispering (*) style summons me to the analysis (**) room.
(*) Publisher's whispering tone means that you might have to face the music for something you have done or said!
(**) Summoning you to the analysis room, means you definitely will face the musich for something you have done or said!
Then I remember this ... He must have seen it say to my self!

BTW Publicist, I know this is not the place and the time to whinge but having lost touch with the Club for a few months now, I went trhough some of the most recent Club's bulletins to catch up.
During the Australian Championships in Sydney earlier this year Josh Dalton won outiright the Norths Classic, and I shared equal second in the same event. Not a word of this news found its way to the Club's bulletins!

"You know that posting of yours in the ChessChat Forum" he begins. Now I know he has seen it. "Not that I mind what is written there, however, it would be much better for all of us, if the Clubs that publish information and advertise their tournaments in the Forum, to do the wood work throughout and keep on publishing results after each round as well as draw for the next etc. Finally, it would also be great if in the end of the tournament they clearly stated who won all prizes and if possible what were the prizes they won, like we do here at the Box Hill Chess Club"!

I nodded in agreement and having of course evidence such as the following for my defence

Having said that, I must admit the bulletins have improved even more since the last time I had a look, and for that you deserve a huge
BTW chatters are encouraged to check out themselves here: http://www.boxhillchess.org.au/newsletters.htm

and also having had a clean record in my dealings with him, I know he 'd never doubted my good intentions! Additionally, he looks in a great form, and directed play in his usual cool, calm and efficient style. 'on ya captain! :)

Many thanks for keeping us updated with the draw but I noticed some differences between the draw as shown on the page linked above and that given in the latest newsletter also dated 6 May.

The draw is a living thing and I try to update it when new information comes to hand. The most extreme example I witnessed once when I assisted in an Australian Championship when the draw was changed after the games had started. Players seemed to accept stopping the games and starting again with a different opponent

The following should also be credited to the Box Hill Chess Club bulletin, since I copied it from there!

This draw has been made with with Savithri, Michael Addamo, and Geoff Cook receiving a 0.5 point bye. This is probably as good an opportunity as any to re-mind everyone that the allocation of this is entirely at the discretion of the arbi-ter.
These are some of the principles that guide him.
1 No 1/2 point byes after round 7
2 You must be sufficiently highly rated to give you an expectancy of a 50% score in the tournament.
3 You can only get one 1/2 point bye in the tournament

Normally I'd say (2) was unnecessary. Even if a player who is likely to score <50% gets a half-point bye that lifts them to a score above what they deserve at that stage, then most likely any form of Swiss or Swiss-like draw will then take care of them by giving them opposition who will beat them, and therefore no advantage will be gained.

I think though that with eight rating groups there must be some possibility of a half-point bye a few rounds out from the end being advantageous to a player in their quest for a ratings group prize.

It took me quite a few years but I finally discovered how to castle K- or Q-side without touching either the King or the respective a or h rooks! I think I am going to try it at Box Hill Chess Club tonight!!!
And it's perfectly legal too, I checked the FIDE castling rules they have nothing against it!

It's been quite some time since I have noticed that the official Box Hill Chess Club's announcements in this Forum are becoming less and less frequent!
I don't know if this is an official directive on behalf of the Club but just in case this is the case, I will abstain of transfering information that I find from other sourses here.
That's although I believe that information about changes of the Club Championship's draw and other information regarding events etc should be given as much publicity as possible.
Then again I might be wrong!

It is true JaK that over time I have become less inclined to publish on this chat board. Why should I, my threads get hijacked, my posts get ambushed by live links to competing events or other peoples blogs; I get patronised and denigrated by ACF officials. However until the new interactive Canterbury/ BoxHill web site arrives I will try and do better. The new board is only a few months away.

Oh diddums. Your "ambushing" theory is paranoid nonsense that several posters here (not just "ACF officials") have debunked and if you still go on groundlessly insulting other posters by falsely accusing them of competitive ambush marketing then what sort of obsequious response do you expect?

Dear Publicist, it is true that I had anticipated (albeit too late as I can see) that something wasn't exactly going smoothly in the state of Denmark.
Apologies if my observation in regards to the gradual diminishing of BHCC and CJCC promotional material and subsequent decision to cease conveying related information from other sources, (the Club's website not excluded) in this forum here caused unforeseen dimensions of friction.

I understand your position (that doesn't necessarily means I justify it) although as a bearer of a multiple signature promoting events that i see fit at the time (including the Goons Show) I should be careful which sites and threads I am visiting.

What really intrigues me is that the confrontation here can be described as the proverbial storm in a tea cup in comparison to uproar it caused in the other Forum, which of what i was told since I was away during the climax of the events led to thread splitting, removal of posts and some very unsavory exchanges. Yet, promotion of the Club's events seem to be going on unperturbed if not substantially augmented in the other place! Why the preferential treatment?

I am posting here most of the time and my input in this forum is substantially larger than the corresponing participation in the other place. However, when it comes to Club promotion I am trying to be as equal as possible, not because i am trying to wave the pacifist flag (never again thanks) but for the simple reason that (A+B)>A, where A+B = all of us and A or B = not all uf us.

The way things look now, and I stand to be corrected if I am wrong, can be presented as: I don't like elements c, d, and e from set A, so I take my ball (read Club) I go to set B and stuff set A!

I believe that discussion, not necessarily according to our liking, crirticism or encouragement, approval or rejection is better than silence. It is even much better than those horrible and monotonous stagnated repetitions of "results of round x and draw of round y in the www.clubofyourchoice/nowhere/000site". I, confess that I refuse to even look at those pages anymore let alone follow their links and I know for a fact that I am not the only one who has wondered "can't they form a freeking sentence to make the bloody thing a bit more attractive and readable? But that's me anyway!

I have conscientiuesly tried to help not only BHCC & CJCC and other CLubs as much and in any way I possibly could. You know my love and devotion for the Club, you also know that despite our occasional disagreements the common cause prevails and will continue to prevail no matter what!
Good luck with the new website, looking forward to see it!
