Dear chess players

At the beginning of 2010, the MCC committee distributed surveys asking players what sort of tournaments they were interested in playing in and what type of tournaments the MCC was running well or badly and what could be improved about tournaments at MCC.

We put out the same surveys at the start of 2009 and the overwhelming majority of people who filled them out wanted the return of the MCC Saturday Allegro. This is why we have promoted that event so heavily over the past year. The allegro is now firmly entrenched as a great tournament which anyone is welcome to play in.

The results of this years surveys however, have been rather different. While people are still happy with our allegro, our Monday evening events and our Cup Weekender, a large number of people considered our smaller weekenders to be not up to expected standards - with the Australia Day weekender a low point...

In order to provide what the punters want, the MCC is giving its smaller weekenders special attention this year (in the way we gave the allegro special attention last year) so that they can grow and flourish into events which most players want to play in.

The following changes have been put in place so that our ANZAC Day Weekender has every chance of success:

1. The event will be FIDE rated. (last year it was only ACF rated)

2. The event will be a Catagory 2 Grand Prix Event. (last year it was Cat 1)

3. The first 3 prizes are guaranteed - $500 first, $300 second and $200 third. (last year the prize pool was significantly lower)

4. The event will be 7 rounds. (last year it was 5 rounds)

5. The pairings will be done using Swissperfect. (last year they were done manually)

6. The event is being promoted nearly 2 months in advance in order to secure a maximum attendence. (last year things were not so well organised)

7. The allegro will not be run on the ANZAC Day weekend, so the weekender will have the centre stage. (last year both events ran at once)

These changes have been made because they reflect the things that the people who filled out our surveys felt were important when participating in a weekend chess tournament. We have tried to please a much larger section of the chess public through these changes.

However, this tournament will only become a great tournament, and a permanent fixture on the Australian chess calendar if people actually support the event and play in it. The MCC has done its bit by making changes that you, the chess playing public asked for. We now ask all of you to support this event and seriously consider playing in it.

I hope to start a list of confirmed entries in the next few days. I would love to see all of your names on it!

Grant Szuveges, MCC President

Many of the allegro players do not play tournaments with longer time limits. Furthermore, some people have to work during public holidays (myself included) so they will not be able to participate in the weekender anyhow.

Nobody disputes center stage of the ANZAC weekender (it is promising to be a great event) but its a pity there will be no Allegro :(

Grant, I appreciate that you have listened to the survey responses and made changes accordingly. Well done. I hope the event is a success.

Great stuff, Grant. Once a flyer is ready, I’ll distribute it at Croydon.

About the allegro, whilst the regulars might be sad to miss out for one week, my feeling is that this way the club is able to completely focus on running our weekenders properly; there’s a lot of work involved in doing that. From a quick glance at the lists of players, I’d estimate at least two thirds of the allegro players do play in regular tournaments and from my observations, the allegro has taken away some of the life force of the weekenders it has run alongside: The focus of the MCC organisers is split, the focus of the members, players and spectators is split, the room which traditionally has the top boards is taken away from the weekender etc.
If the MCC can build up its weekenders so they are well run and well supported then we could consider having a mini allegro during a break in play but for now I’m all for focussing solely on the weekender and seeing where that takes us.

Jean,

What you have said represents the exact feeling of the MCC committee. We all need to get on board with this tournament (and our other smaller weekenders) so that we can provide a good environment for all chess players to play in - not just the ones who like the quick time controls.

That said, we are still taking our allegro extremely seriously and hope that it continues to grow and prosper. We still havnt had a field of 40 for the allegro yet but we have come very close several times.

Ive sent you, and many other people an ANZAC Day weekender flyer via email. You can use that one if you like, or pick one up next time you are at MCC.

I agree that its a pity that there will be no allegro that weekend, but we need to run the club in a balanced manner and give all players the opportunity to feel that their favourite types of chess are taken seriously.

This will only affect the allegro for 4 weekends per year, meaning that MCC will still run 48 allegros for players to play in if they wish. The allegro players are getting their fair share of the pie I think.

Okie, if the committee feels that having no allegro improves environment for the weekenders - lets have no allegro :) (even though, I still do not see the connection between the two to be honest). Hopefully, T. Toshevsky, B, Toshevsky, Krunic and other 'strictly allegro'' players will take this opportunity to play in a bigger event.

I don't want excuses, I want to be winning them.

And even if my computer does do it, you've seen over the past few weeks that I have had a lot of work to do changing the computer's pairings because of errors in the results that other people have put in.

I even had to fix some of your errors last week!

Hi Grant,

I am thinking of playing in this tournament, but I need to know is there any chance of getting a bye for round 6 at all?

Also the second question is, can players take half point byes and up until what round?

From memory, you can take half point byes in each except the last two rounds? Don't hold me to that though.

As Carl (fireater) said, half point byes are allowed in rounds 1 to 5. Therefore, you could have a bye in round 6, but you wouldnt get any points for it. There is no problem with this though.

Your impression is incorrect. It is perfectly permissable to have three fide rated games in one day. Only in norm tournaments must there be no more than 2 rounds per day.

If it was only two rounds per day for fide rated events, then NSW Open, Vic Open etc could not be fide rated under their current format.

You are correct of course - I was thinking of Norm events.

And I've played many times in Ballarat and the Vic Open!

Interestingly I've now found this FIDE regulation:
3.0 Number of rounds per day
3.1 No more than three rounds per day and a total playing time of no more than 12 hours.

This must be assuming 60 move games - I've played more than 12 hours in a day from memory...

I hope this tournament reaches over 50 players

Add Mark McKenzie to the list. That makes 32 so far.... Good chance of getting 50.... Cup Weekend got 50, so there is no reason that this shouldnt. That said, we shouldnt be counting our chickens before they hatch...

In any case, 50 would be a big success - last year we only had 25, so a 100% mark up from one year to the next is excellent. The growth of this event is something that the MCC should be proud of. And its great to see so many players from other clubs supporting the event too! If everyone gets behind this tournament, we could have a really great event on our hands and something which could be a big annual event on the Victorian and Australian chess calander.

So for anyone out there who is undecided about playing, PLEASE PLAY!!!!!

Smerdon, Teichmann, Cheng, Morris, Wallis, Dowling (The top 6 seeds) are all on 2, then there's Stephans, Ly, Urban, and Lekkas also on 2.

I think Zelesco's next on 1.5, then there's a bunch of people on 1, 0.5 and 0.

I think I'm the only one outside the top 10 on 2, so not too many upsets going on around the top.

Yes, a lot of thanks from the MCC committee are due.

David Stimson is doing a sterling job as arbiter, but he hasn't had much to deal with as the players have been conducting themselves excellently. As an example, some of the games overran this morning and we allowed those who finished late a little time between games. There were no complaints from any of the players who were affected by this which is a credit to them.

Mike Loh has helped out with the technical computer stuff along with Frank Lekkas, Domogoj Dragicevic and Jamie Kenmure and we owe these guys a big thankyou too.

Lastly, I wasn't able to talk to many players today, but one was David Smerdon and he agreed to analyse one of his games exclusively for our club website, so thankyou very much David.

I was only in the club for a short time today but the atmosphere was really good, and I was lucky enough to see the endgames between Voon-Addamo and Stevens-Teichmann where the lower rated players both overcame their opponents. I'd like to have a greater look at Michael's game against Richard Voon as it looked very interesting. When I first saw the Stevens-Teichmann game it was an endgame of bishop and 2 versus rook and 2 with the pawns split and no passed pawns. These can sometimes be tricky, but Tristan converted comfortably, though Eric had very little time to devise a defence.

The big surprise in the first round was Karl Zelasco beating Geoff Hilliard. But then again, when junior's gain scalps I'm not sure we should be all that surprised anymore.

So I suppose we shouldn't be surprised that Karl Zelasco drew with Domogoj Dragicevic....

Frank Lekkas isn't a junior anymore, but he is proving that he is still a vastly improving player with a win against Tony Davs.

Michael Addamo has an ACF of 1378 and a FIDE rating of over 1700....I think his victory over Richard Voon suggests his FIDE rating might be nearer the mark. We don't get to see Tristan Stephens too much in Melbourne, but he is a very capable player who has beaten some pretty good players over the past few years. Eric Teichmann is another good scalp for Tristan. Karl Zelasco backed up with another impressive draw against Milutin Krunic, but I suppose we shouldn't be surprised!!   And a great result for Enoch Fan to beat Rad Chmiel.

Mike Loh has posted the round 4 pairings which should bring us up to date. The mouthwatering contests of Morris-Smerdon and Wallis-Cheng on the top 2 boards head the round, but there are some interesting games throughout the draw. Tony Tosevski is in the hot seat against Karl Zelesco, while Tony Davis has to face another talented junior, Ari Dale.

Obviously David Smerdon is the man to beat, but the young players around him are showing their ability and maturity and it has been a pleasure to have the likes of Wallis, Stephens, and Cheng as visitors to the MCC, as well as some of our own young guns such as Morris, Addamo and Lekkas. Juniors really are the future of our game and when you witness the end of a +4 hour marathon between Zach Loh and Justin Tan, you realise just how much of a future we have in this country.

  to all the players competing at the MCC this weekend.

Very impressive performance by FM Bobby Cheng! A point ahead with a round to go - I wouldn't blame him if he drew in the last round. Mind you, GM David Smerdon will no doubt want to win!

It was a great tournament and a fantastic atmosphere. It was good to see visitors from other clubs coming to spectate and give support to their clubmates, like Roger Croft and Shane Lawson. It's always a pleasure to host interstate players such as Glenn Gibbs and Tristan Stephens. It's a testament to the character of Victorian chess that so many people around the club should try to help the tournament run smoothly, such as Mike Loh, Jamie Kenmure and Frank Lekkas, while virtually no complaints were made throughout the event.

A big congrats to all players , and a big thankyou to David Stimson for his work as arbiter

Even by the familiar standards of rapidly improving (and hence continually underrated on pretty much any system) juniors that is amazing.

Thanks fireeater for your comments. Also I did live up to my handle in this tournament.

The thanks should really be going out to MCC for there efforts in this tournament and may I say it was an enjoyable tournament with strong players. Once again well done to the committee of MCC for making this happen.

A big congratulations to David Stimson on arbitering the tournament and all others involved. If I have missed anyone I do apologise.
