Seventeen children from Bundaberg and Maryborough attended the Sunday Children’s Chess Tournament held at Central School on 28 February

Top player for the day was Nathanael Tomlinson of Maryborough with a blistering seven wins out of seven games, a grand slam!!

Second place for the day was obtained by Tim Harris (Bundaberg) with five and a half games out of seven and third place was gained by Brandon Lowe (Maryborough) with five games out of seven.

As there were many of the top primary and secondary chess players in the Wide Bay area present, there were many close games. Some of the upsets of the tournament were when Tim Harris gained a draw against Aishwarya Preshy, Catherine Riggs winning against Dylan Hepenstall and Matthew Riggs winning against David Nelson, to name just a few!!.

Some of the players in this tournament will be playing in the first round of the Wide Bay School championships in the coming week.

Bundaberg Chess Club Secretary Allan Menham said the standard of chess amongst the children just continues to improve
