Billanook College (Mooroolbark) has been supporting quality chess incentives for their students and the wider community for a number of years, providing chess coaching and school tournaments for students within school as well as conducting their annual Billanook Chess Classic, held on a Saturday, which is open to public.

In 2010 Billanook College will be expanding their Chess program repertoire by offering to the public the Billanook College Chess Championship Cup tournaments. These events will be held on the four Saturday school tour dates of 20th March, 1st May, 19th June and 21st August. The idea is that children can attend the chess tournament while parents join in the tours. This is the College's first Chess Championship Cup in this very special year for Billanook College - their 30th birthday!

A healthy prize structure is offered for an Open division as well as a number of junior divisions. Individual scores for each tournament accumulate over all 4 events to determine the grand prizes and winners of the perpetual Billanook College Chess Championship cups, to be presented at the conclusion of the last event on August 21st.

More details will be made available shortly and posted here. For up to date information (prizes, entry fees and how to register online) please visit this site (http://www.northernstarchess.com/Tourney_Billanook.html).

Note that the BCCCC is a joint venture between Billanook College (http://www.billanook.vic.edu.au/v2/index.html)and Northern Star Chess (http://www.northernstarchess.com/Home.html).

The organiser has told me there are about 12 registered entries so far. I have no list of names - note I am not organising this. A number of people have told the organiser they will come, but the count is for those that have registered.

PLEASE register online to avoid disappointment - taking a stab at numbers means also guessing on the maximum numbers - do YOU want to be the last person to enter on the day where there is not a chess set/clock available for you??

A wonderful day was held at Billanook college. Very pleasant surroundings and a well run inaugural BCCCC event. Jamie Cross did a great job as the arbiter, and he had also organised a number of puzzles and problem solving to fill in the day as well. Many thanks to Pearl Yung for getting this whole concept off the ground. The next event is 1st May, from 9.30am.

Congratulations to Ascaro Pecori won the Open section, and Ethan Lim the junior. Ascaro had not intended to play (he was there for his son), but he was encouraged!

For those Melbourne chess parents/coaches that are curious about Billanook college, the college conducts a tour on a regular basis. The next is on Saturday 1st May, from 10.30am (that ties in with the Billanook College Chess Championship Cup dates, that start at 9.30am). Bookings are preferred though not essential. See http://www.billanook.vic.edu.au/v2/enrolment_print_form2.php for the booking form.

At the previous tour, two school captains came to the BCCCC tournament.

Come along and play chess at the host school of the 2011 Australian Junior Chess Championship! Parents can join a short guided tour of the grounds to get an idea of what's in store. Guided tours meet in the Alan Ross Centre, which is the proposed venue of the big event in January 2011.

Fantastic weather presented itself for Round 2 of the BCCCC. Again, Jamie Cross was arbiter and there were many entertaining puzzles when chess was not being played. Joshua Deverajh (U12) proved too strong for the assembled players, winning by a point from Gilchrist Clendinnen (Open) and Ethan Lim (U8).

Results are below, with prize money and trophies awarded. Billanook college donated two 'Be Your Best' awards, and these went to Lauren Huning and Johnathan Ho.

Everyone enjoyed themselves and we look forward to round 3 on 19 June.

39 players turned up for a very pleasant day of rapid chess. Leonid came out on top with only 1 draw (to Guy) while Guy was also undefeated but had 3 draws and so Ascaro snuck into 2nd spot. A good result for Joshua with a draw to Guy in the last round.

Damar, Joshua and Ethan won the U16/U12/U8 prizes respectively, while Joshua and Denise won the overall best boy and girl prizes.

A well done to Jamie Cross as arbiter and Pearl's overall organising.
