James is starting VCE this year
A whole term of late night Mondays is not good
His chess is way important to him but VCE has to have priority

There was a good turnout and atmosphere; 38 players in the field I think. The higher rated players mostly all won their games. There were only a couple of upsets (on ratings) on the lower boards. Unrated player Schmidt beat Chmiel and I'll be interested to see what happened in the end with Lekkas and Kildisas. Sorry I don't have more precise details - I was too busy with my game (a loss to Lycett.)
Btw, the new couch is great. Apart from looking good, it actually provides back support.

Hi Watto, and Michael,

The results are at the MCC website, barring one game that I am still unsure of the result of between Shaun Hose and Domagoj Dragicevic.

the url is:http://www.melbournechessclub.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=44&Itemid=83
Frank Lekkas did win his game against Victor Kildisas in 4.5 hours and about 100 moves, a good result for Frank, well done!

What do you mean by the phrase "get that much detail about others' games in"
just curious as the report was not the result of note taking, but memory instead

Exactly that - just that I am impressed that you managed to notice and remember so much of other player's games. People often complement me on the same skill in my reports from tournaments I play in but I think you did an even better job of it there than I do.

Meh everyone knows I didn't win. You'll see at move 70 that I realised that I just wasted 20 moves driving him into the wrong corner lol.

Baron: There's no need to take it to endgame group. I just couldn't remember what side of the board I needed him on, and after I wasted 20 moves driving him back to the queenside a8 corner, I had very limited moves left to actually mate him. It's been a while since I had tried mating with bishop and knight and I guess I had just forgotten what corner I needed him in :\

It's been a while since I had tried mating with bishop and knight and I guess I had just forgotten what corner I needed him in :\

In some endgames it is not necessary to know all the mechanics, but it is really, really useful to know the basic details, here that the mate must be in the corner of the same color as the bishop, in 2N vs. P that the pawn must be blocked by a knight as far back as possible (not with the *King* Anand!)

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.d4 d6 5.Nc3 a6 6.a4 Bg4 7.Be3 exd4 8.Bxd4 Qe7 9.Bxf6 Qxf6 10.Nd5 Qd8 11.Ba2 Ne5 12.Ne3 Bxf3 13.gxf3 c6 14.f4 Nd7 15.Qd4 Qf6 16.Qxf6 Nxf6 17.f3 Nh5 18.f5 b5 19.axb5 cxb5 20.Bd5 Ra7 21.Bc6+ Kd8 22.Bxb5 a5 23.Nd5 g6 24.fxg6 hxg6 25.Kf2 Bg7 26.c3 Nf6 27.Ne3 Kc7 28.Bc4 Kb6 29.b4 axb4 30.Rxa7 Kxa7 31.cxb4 Kb6 32.Bxf7 g5 33.Nf5 Bf8 34.Bc4 g4 35.fxg4 Rxh2+ 36.Rxh2 Nxg4+ 37.Kg3 Nxh2 38.Kxh2 d5 39.exd5 Bxb4 40.Kg3 Kc7 41.Kf4 Kd8 42.Ke5 Bc3+ 43.Ke6 Bb4 44.Nd4 Ba3 45.Bb5 Kc7 46.Ba4 Kd8 47.Bc6 Bc5 48.Nb5 Bb4 49.Bb7 Bc5 50.d6 Bxd6 51.Kxd6 Ke8 52.Ke6 Kd8 53.Bc6 Kc8 54.Kd6 Kd8 55.Nc3 Kc8 56.Na4 Kd8 57.Nc5 Kc8 58.Bd7+ Kb8 59.Kc6 Ka7 60.Kc7 Ka8 61.Kb6 Kb8 62.Na6+ Ka8 63.Bc6#

Instead of 53.Ba6 Ke8 54.Nd4 Kd8 etc. there was already mate in 11 with the above instructive move order. Especially note 60.Kc7! Ka8 61.Kb6! Kb8 where white "triangulating" the king converts Ka7 vs. Kc7 to Kb6 vs. Kb8 where the knight gets the useful move Na6+. This is based on retrograde analysis, not my fantastic moves :D

Right move order was 96. Bc8 Kb8 97. Ba6 Ka8 98. Nd8 Kb8 99. Nc6+ Ka8 100. Bb7#, where the last move capture was on move 51 :\Even with moves played in the game you could still have mated him on move 100 with 98. Nb4 Kb8 99. Na6+ Ka8 100. Bc6# instead of 98. Bc8.

Yes well as I said earlier, I drove him to the wrong side of the board and wasted about 20 moves doing it. When I realised I needed him in the other corner, I went for it.

Also Frank, Jack Shanks pointed out that your opponent wasnt writing the moves down so he couldnt claim the 50 move rule anyway

Can you put up provisional pairings depending on the result of Pano and Paul's game like you did in the U2000, or do you have to wait for the other 2 postponed games first?

What about the game between Thai and Jesse? Any word on the result of that game or (if not yet played) when that's being played?

Also, has the game between Bosko and Jim been played yet? It was mentioned earlier that boards 3-6 were postponed, but this is not fully reflected on the club's website.

I can't see how a draw can be done if two additional games apart from Domagoj versus Simon are still outstanding.

Good points all, but I was under the impression that the Dragicevic-Schmidt game was the last to be played so I was letting everyone know when to expect the draw for the final round. I don't know the results of the other postponed games yet, and the arbiter is in Canberra until later today.

Although I cannot confirm this, I am guessing that Jesse beat Malcolm and Domagoj beat Guy putting them both on 6.5, and leaving Guy on 6 points.

I left the club early last night and don't know the full results. The Stojic game was probably still going when Malcolm also left the club and so he couldn't give that final score, but if Dusan won then he would have come clear second on 7 points.
