The first allegro of 2010 at the MCC bodes well for the future. A strong line up was headed by FM Michael Baron and included 27 players, young and old. The club was absolutely buzzing, and I was a bit thrown because I had got my days mixed up over the holidays and didn't realise it was Saturday. I was looking for a quiet time to do some stuff around the club....no chance today, I just decided to join in the fun:D

It was good to see some new faces at the allegro (welcome to Emmanual Wong and Reuben Nowak) and also that no one finished on 0 from their played games.

Michael Baron won the tournament quite comfortably to take the $50 first prize, and was followed by Doug Lindberg who finished very strongly to take outright second and $30. I somehow managed third placeand $20 swindling my way out of a few very dodgy positions, especially against Deniz Tuncer and Milutin Krunic. Funnily enough, the only game I felt really good in Dave Beaumont managed to turn the tables on me when I thought I had him and I lost:D

The first rating prize was set at U-1700 and a four way tie was reached between Ari Dale, Eamonn O' Molloy, Tony Tosevski and Deniz Tuncer all scoring 4 points and having to play some pretty tough games.

The second rating prize was set at U-1400 and was won outright by Michael Tanner (your prize of $25 is at the club waiting for you when you next turn up) who scored an excellent 4/7. Joint second in this category were Michael Steele and Finlay Dale.

The full scores follow, but I have to emphasise that besides the competitive nature of the players, there is a really good spirit at the MCC allegro's. I haven't been to one in a few months and it was a real pleasure which I'm going to have to try to get back to.:)

Michael Baron and Jesse Jager have tied for first in a smallish but strong Allegro number 47.

The argy bargy started in the very first round with Chris Kolak falling into a mate in one against Adolph Lekkas while in a winning position to continue what has been a horror stretch over the past few weeks. But in round 3, an even more unexpected blunder happened with Michael Baron losing from a much better endgame against Douglas Lindberg. Meanwhile, Jesse Jager steamrolled his way through the field to reach 5/5 after defeating Lindberg. Eamonn O - Molloy was also having something of a purple patch scoring 2.5/3 against higher rated players in rounds 3, 4 and 5 to reach 3.5 points. But after losing to Lindberg, Baron (like all true champions) was able to fight back and in round 5 he defeated Kolak and went on to defeat Jager the next round to share the lead on 5/6. O - Molloys luck ran out when he got to board 2 and copped Lindberg who moved to 4.5 points along with Beaumont and Tosevski (who had been very lucky against Michael Addamo who overpressed in round 5). In the final round, Baron destroyed Beaumont on board 1 while Jager accounted for Tosevski on board 2. Lindberg needed to beat Fitzpatrick to finish third but ended up losing. While Frank Lekkas had a day to forget, Deniz Tuncer played well to score a solid 4 points in a fairly hard allegro, defeating Tim Trott in the final round. Kolak also played a nice attacking win against O - Molloy in the final round. The loss didnt stop O - Molloy winning the group B prize though and Tony Tosevski won the group A prize.

Allegro 48 was massive - in more ways than one! Firstly we had 32 players, but secondly, 5 board 1 games were streamlined live via the dgt board, thanks to some helpful MCC members.

The fun started in the very first round when Michael Tanner scored an upset win over 2nd seed Cedric Antolis, and the upsets continued in the second round when Sylvester Urban and Richard Voon both lost. The top seeds kept falling in round 3 when Douglas Lindberg lost to Rad Chmiel. In the meantime, top seed Michael Baron just kept winning, defeating Marcus Raine, Chris Kolak and David Beaumont to get to 5/5. In the 6th round Baron continued with a win over Lindberg as black after sacrificing the exchange while Kolak-Beaumont went down to the wire on board 2 with Beaumont declaring mate with one second left - after a queen was left en prix in the time scramble! In the final round Baron was crushing Antolis but strangely lost the plot to register his only loss from the tournament. However this loss was still enough to win after Beaumont and Raine eventually drew a blocked up position from a Samisch Nimzo-Indian. Angelos Tsoukalis won the group A prize while new MCC junior Thomas Gawin won the group B prize with 3.5 points. It was great to see 8 new players playing the first MCC allegro and also great to see so many new members sign up today!

Michael Baron completely dominated Allegro 49 from start to finish. From what I saw of it all, nobody else ever stood a chance against him this week. Michael steamrolled the field and had won the tournament by the end of round 6. He then went on to play in the blitz and draw with Polish GM Soko who is here visiting for a few weeks - hopefully he can play in next weeks allegro to give Baron a challenge... Chris Kolak jumped into second defeating Douglas Lindberg and Tony Tosevski joined him by defeating Bosko Mijatovic. Elizabeth Warren won the B group with her first 4/7 in an allegro. Rueben Nowak also impressed scoring a creditable 3.5 points.

Here are 2 reasons to play in MCC Saturday Allegro number 50:

1. Its the 50th MCC allegro since it was relaunched! We have had allegros 50 weeks in a row!!!! Make the 50th your next (or first) allegro! Lets see if we can get 50 for 50!

2. The MCC has a new couch - in burgundy leather. So come down on Saturday, try out the couch and then stay for the allegro - what more could anyone want?

I would love to see 50 players for Allegro 50 - we could even get a photo of them all on or around the brand new couch!

The MCC broke the record for allegro participant numbers for Allegro number 50, with 35 players. Michael Baron was in fine form winning the event easily with wins in all 7 of his games. Brian Fitzpatrick came second with 6 after beating Carl Gorka in the final round while a number of players shared third. Great to see Goran Ilic back at MCC after a number of years away! He scored a creditable 4 points. Also great to see so many MCC members renew their memberships today - and a few new members sign up! We have more than 50 already and its not even the end of January yet! Hopefully we break that record this year too. Of the rest, Michael Addamo started well - after losing to Baron in round 1, he won the next 4 in a row, while Jack Puccini started with a draw with Sylvester Urban and continued on the defeat Simon Karumbi who recovered brilliantly to score 4.5 points.

Michael Baron continues his good form taking out the 51st Allegro with a picket fence score. Brian Fitzpatrick came second with 6 points whilst Milutin Krunic and a number of the juniors had really good tournaments against strong fields. Great to see 30+ players in consecutive weeks. (when will we get to 40?) Another interesting thing about this allegro was the strength of it, with players rated just under 1650 starting in the bottom half!

Allegro 53 attracted 33 players and was an enjoyable day at the MCC. The top seeds were FM Michael Baron and IM James Morris, with Partsi, Fitzpatrick, Kolak and Lindberg all above 1900 biting at their heels...

Baron started well defeating Kolak, Morris and Partsi and it looked like he would run away with the tournament (as usual), but then in round 6, Douglas Lindberg played a really good game to defeat him. This situation left Baron, Morris, Kolak and Lindberg all on 5/6 going into the final round.

In the final round, Morris turned the tables on Kolak to win from 2 pieces vs a rook down while Lindberg also won a game which looked certain to end in a draw against Frank Lekkas. Baron also stayed in equal first defeating Brian Fitzpatrick.

While the top was very exciting, the middle and bottom part of the event also produced competitive chess, with MCCs juniors on the rampage! Ari Dale had a great tournament to finish on 5/7 after beating 3 players much higher rated than him. Another player to impress was Jack Puccini who scored 4/7 defeating (destroying) David Stimson in the final round very quickly. Jack has long been able to play brilliant sacrificial chess, but Jack and consistency havnt always been used in the same sentence. This tournament though, he got it all right, easily accounting for the lower rated players who have traditionally given him more trouble than the higher ones! Finley Dale also impressed with 3.5 points. While only finishing on 2 points, Sreemanth Gurram also seems to have turned a corner, putting up massive fights in all of his games.

IM James Morris has won the Saturday Allegro outright for the second week in a row! James won all of his games except for his draw in round 5 with Michael Baron. Dimitri Partsi jumped into second by beating Baron in the final round, while Baron, Chris Kolak and Eden McGorlick shared third. Finley Dale had the tournament of his life, scoring 4 points with 2 of his wins coming against 1700+ players and the other 2 against 1400+ players. Juniors are usually notorious for finishing games quickly (and usually losing) but today there were many juniors winning their games very quickly - against adults!

Over the past few years, our society has seen a huge rise in the number of people playing fantasy sport over the internet. In America, one can play fantasy baseball, fantasy football, fantasy hockey, fantasy basketball and a whole host of other games. Here in Victoria, we have fantasy football (AFL) with 2 very popular games - Supercoach and Dream Team. I can imagine that NSW and QLD have something similar with rugby league. In any case, myself, David Beaumont, Philip Dragic, Jake Kostrzewa, Kelvin McBride and 400,000 other people will begin our Supercoach seasons tomorrow night when Richmond plays Carlton. The winner will win $50,000 and a four wheel drive while weekly winners will win $1000 per week.... Players also get to play in a league with their friends for personally bragging rights. My team, "the Papagalos" won the premiership in 2008, however I lost last years grand final to Philip Dragic's team "The One Percenters". His team also won the 2007 premiership. David Beaumonts team, "The Firegoats" have not won a premiership yet, so maybe this is their year..... Ive played 4 years with the Papagalos, so this year my team has a new name: "The Berko Bunnys"! Hopefully I can win a premiership with the Berko Bunnys too!

You might be wondering by now, what this has to do with the MCC Allegro.... Well, Ive thought that since we play fantasy football, fantasy cricket, fantasy soccer etc, why not fantasy chess?

For those of you who dont play, here is a rough rundown of the rules:

You pick a team of footballers from real football teams. They all cost different amounts of money depending on how good they are. You also have a salary cap, so that you cant simply pick the best 30 players in the AFL. In the real games, when one of "your" players gets a kick or takes a mark, you get points, or if they stuff something up, you will lose some points. If they are fairly cheap and they keep playing well for a number of weeks in a row, their price will rise. For example, Player X starts at $130,000 (a low price) but he plays 7 great games in his first 8 rounds and by round 8, he costs $445,000. Therefore, if someone wants to buy him in round 8, they will have to pay a lot more for him. Throughout the year, you can trade 20 players, so at round 8, you can trade player X (at $445,000) for Player Z, a genuine superstar who is usually priced at $600,000 but has had some bad weeks and is down at $440,000. I think that you are starting to get the idea.....

So, how do we do this with chess? Well, we need to find an equivelent to the prices - and that equivelent is the ratings. But, for this game, we need ratings which change EVERY WEEK - therefore, the most suitable are the MCC Allegro ratings. They change EVERY TIME a player plays an allegro, and therefore, would work perfectly for a game like this....

The next thing we need to work out is how the players give you a score - since they dont take marks and kick goals. Well, that is easy. We use their score from the allegro. Eg, if Michael Baron scores 6 points, then you will gain 6 points, if you "own" Michael Baron. If he scores 5 points, as he did last time, you will only score 5....

So, I propose that you get to pick a team of 10 players at the start of the year, and every week, your best 7 scores count. Obviously we dont want all 10 to count, because not all players play allegro every week. Therefore if 3 of your players dont play one week, you still have 7 left to score for you. The player costs exactly what their rating is, and the salary cap is $150,000 - meaning that, if you use all of the money in your salary cap, the average cost of a player will be $1500 (1500 rating).

OK, if this was the case, then my team (based on last weeks ratings) would be as follows:

1. Michael BARON 2244 (398 games) (55 allegros)
The rolls royce of the competition! Baron has played in 55 of the 56 allegros, so he will score points for you every week - and lots of them! I cant ever remember him scoring less than 5 points, and he often gets 6 or 7! You can build a team around him. The only problem, is that he is very expensive at $2244...

2. James MORRIS 2189 (47 games) (6 allegros)
The heir apparent. Also very expensive and probably riskier since he doesnt play every single week (no use having all that money sitting on the bench). But, I reckon he will be playing a lot more this year, so I think he is worth the punt, and when he does play, he scores big - very big!

3. Chris KOLAK 1928 (354 games) (49 allegros)
Chris plays most allegros and usually scores between 4 and 6 points. He is very good at beating weaker players and therefore almost never scores less than 4. He is also a player capable of beating the big guns, so he will always have the odd week where he scores 6 or 7. This could make a difference...

4. Tony TOSEVSKI 1706 (392 games) (55 allegros)
Along with Baron, the player who has played the most allegros (he has less games because he has had some byes which Baron hasnt had). $1706 is expensive for Tony since his rating fluctuates between 1600 and 1700 usually, but he is fairly consistant with his scores and he virtually always plays... He would be better value at $1620 for example...

5. Ben FRAYLE 1356 (48 games) (7 allegros)
Here is where having some inside information helps. On the surface, it doesnt look like Ben is a good bet as he has only played 7 allegros, BUT, he has played the past 5 or 6 of them! And he recently joined the MCC, specifically to play in them! Therefore, I think that he will be playing regularly and will get me points every week. The other thing I know about Ben, is that he is playing on the net a lot and improving rapidly. He always seems to beat someone higher rated than him and thus his rating is going up. If it goes up high enough, I could trade him in for someone more consistant who has had a few bad weeks (sorry Ben!).

6. Finley DALE 1338 (160 games) (23 allegros)
A rapidly improving junior who is gaining a lot of rating points every week. Buy him now while his rating/price is still fairly low. When he gets to 1500, he could be traded - or you could stick with him, because he is always getting better! He beat 2 players over 1700 last week!

7. Eden McGORLICK 1315 (7 games) (1 allegro)
I would pick Eden because I believe that his rating is too low. In hindsight it actually went up by 85 points after this week! This was because he scored 5/7! Any player rated 1300 who scores 5/7 is worth having in the team! But, he wont stay cheap for long! He has the low rating I think, because in his first allegro, he beat some unrated players and lost to some highly rated others.

8. Nicholaas SCHROEDER 1052 (107 games) (16 allegros)
Nic doesnt play in as many allegros as a lot of other kids, but when he does play, he usually gains rating points, so he is a good one to buy while he is cheap, and keep him until his rating skyrockets. His rating started out at 700, so I dont see what is stopping him getting to 1300.... That is a gain of $300...

9. Max SIMPSON 886 (9 games) (2 allegros)
Hasnt played many games, but is very cheap - and I know for a fact that he has recently joined MCC..... This means that he may be playing more allegros soon.... He is a junior, and is rapidly improving, so by taking him while he is cheap, we could have a very good player on our hands by the end of the year.

10. Geoffrey KOLAK 876 (52 games) (8 allegros)
Chris' brother Geoffrey is very cheap and he does play reasonably often. His rating doesnt tend to fluctuate much, but he can score 3 points sometimes. Thats what most players rated 1200 score, so surely Geoffrey is a better bet, since you save a few hundred dollars to get the same amount of points. That said, he sometimes only scores 1 or 2 points. But, that is the risk you take....

If this game was a reality, and I did have this team playing last week, I would have scored the following:

5 Baron
6.5 Morris
5 Kolak
4 Tosevski
3.5 Frayle
4 Dale
5 McGorlick
2.5 Schroeder
0 Simpson (didnt play)
0 G. Kolak (didnt play)

Total: 35.5 points (a pretty good score)

How much would their costs have changed in a week? Well Ive just updated the MCC allegro ratings, and this is what they would cost this week:

Baron $2244 -11 $2233
Morris $2189 +15 $2204
C. Kolak $1928 +12 $1940
Tosevski $1706 -5 $1701
Frayle $1356 +9 $1365
Dale $1338 +59 $1397
McGorlick $1315 +85 $1400
Schroeder $1052 +19 $1071
Simpson $886 - $886
G. Kolak $876 - $876

So, based on this, my team would be on track to do very well - but that said, I picked this team after knowing last weeks scores..... Lets see how this exact same team does again this week.....

Hopefully someone will be able to create a game like this based on the MCC allegro and we can all play it together. What do others think?

All I can say now, is that the best advice would be to pick yourself in your own team - and play in all of MCCs allegros - that way, your teams destiny truly is in YOUR own hands!

5 Baron
6.5 Morris
5 Kolak
4 Tosevski
3.5 Frayle
4 Dale
5 McGorlick
2.5 Schroeder
0 Simpson (didnt play)
0 G. Kolak (didnt play)

Total: 35.5 points (a pretty good score)

How much would their costs have changed in a week? Well Ive just updated the MCC allegro ratings, and this is what they would cost this week:

Baron $2244 -11 $2233
Morris $2189 +15 $2204
C. Kolak $1928 +12 $1940
Tosevski $1706 -5 $1701
Frayle $1356 +9 $1365
Dale $1338 +59 $1397
McGorlick $1315 +85 $1400
Schroeder $1052 +19 $1071
Simpson $886 - $886
G. Kolak $876 - $876

So, based on this, my team would be on track to do very well - but that said, I picked this team after knowing last weeks scores..... Lets see how this exact same team does again this week.....

Hopefully someone will be able to create a game like this based on the MCC allegro and we can all play it together. What do others think?

All I can say now, is that the best advice would be to pick yourself in your own team - and play in all of MCCs allegros - that way, your teams destiny truly is in YOUR own hands!
LOL! This is a really great idea, Grant. Very creative thinking. :)

No, more than one person can pick the same player. (otherwise whoever gets Baron and Morris will be at a huge advantage). The skill is to be able to pick a team of 10 players of all different levels. I would imagine that most people will pick Baron (rated over 2200) but if they do, they would have to pick someone rated about 800 also to balance this out. With 10 players and a salary cap of $15000, the average player payment/rating is 1500, so for every 2000 player you get, you will also need a 1000 player....

All I can say now, is that the best advice would be to pick yourself in your own team - and play in all of MCCs allegros - that way, your teams destiny truly is in YOUR own hands!I can nearly do that. Only problem is I don't know how regularly he will play in the MCC Allegro. But Michael Addamo (maddam12) is pretty close a name to Jonathan Michael Adams! I hope to meet him in person one day - we have exchanged PMs. (Sadly, 8 Allegroes out of 60 is not a high proportion.)

Of course another Michael who is an FM and a young Chelsea -supporter IM (yay!) are also non-negotiable members of my team! And if I could have a guest player (and Grant S or someone paid him an appearance fee) , well I couldn't go past my favourite GM and near-namesake- Michael Adams!!!

Yes, you should put Michael Adams in your team. That is a very good choice ;)

Domagoj and Scott

Both of your teams look good - thats the way to do it! It looks like this whole concept is actually going to go ahead! It is attracting a lot of popularity on both forums! Maybe we could get it started the weekend after ANZAC Day - because there will be no allegro on the ANZAC Day weekend. This will give people 2 weeks to look at the rating list and get their squads started!

Key rules:

Only 20 trades allowed for the year

Competition goes for a whole year - or do we make it go for 6 months?

Captain gets double points

Best 7 players scores count

I am trying to understand how these fantasy teams work....as far as I understand it the system - I think it is best to save money not to pick myself or James. Chris Kolak appears to be the best value of all among the top players given his inconsistency and consequently low rating. If Partsy plays regularly...he too may be a good pick.

I dunno, gotta give it a shot :P

James Morris 2204 (cos I have to, don't I? :P) (C)
Kozo Simutanyi 1767 (quality player, always solid)
Ari Dale 1704 (capable of absolutely anything)
Frank Lekkas 1678 (very solid, will consistently get 4+ points)
Michael Addamo 1664 (incredibly solid, sizzling value in my opinion)
Jack Puccini 1414 (upcoming junior, enough said :P)
Eden McGorlick 1400 (severly underrated, as Grant said, so I'll take him while he's cheap :D)
Tosevski, Bosko 1376 (always there, always gets a respectable score)
Simpson, Max 886 (good player for money value :D)
Kolak, Geoff 876 (good player for money value :D)

Total value: 14969.

Hi

I want to see how my players have done also!!! I dont have the full results though!!! Michael and Frank, where are they?

I think that we should start this competition the week after the ANZAC Day weekender (when there is no allegro). This gives people 2 weeks to study the rating list and pick their team.

The competition should go until the end of 2010 and people are allowed 20 trades for the year. The captain of each team gets double points. You can appoint a different captain each week.

Teams should be submitted to me by email at the start, and then I must be notified about any trades before 2pm on the day of the allegro! There is a lockout while the allegro is being played.

As for the tournament, all I can say is: Baron cruised to the 6th round undefeated, defeating Kolak and Morris in the process. In the 6th round, he missed a move against me and swapped into queen + knight vs queen and bishop which I managed to win.

Me, Baron and Morris were all on 5 points by the last round. Chris Kolak beat me, Baron beat Addamo and Morris beat Tanner leaving them on 6, me and Kolak on 5, Addamo on 4.5 and Tanner on 4.

Liam Hamilton stood out during this tournament. He's a junior who I don't recall seeing at MCC so I assume it was his first allegro. He managed to score a respectable 4/7, a great result for his first tournament.

Ill go for:
Michael Baron (2233)
James Morris (2204)
Ari Dale (1695)
Frank Lekkas (1674)
Jack Puccini (1410)

IM James Morris has won the 61st MCC allegro and with this, has overtaken rival FM Michael Baron on the MCC Allegro Rating List! Both players had headed into round 7 with 5.5/6 drawing only with eachother, however in the final round, while Morris got the job done against Sylvester Urban, Baron lost his game against Brian Fitzpatrick to fall to third place. Chris Kolak had a bad day finishing on 4 points, whilst Frank Lekkas, Ari Dale and Michael Addamo impressed with 5 points each. Many of the younger juniors als impressed lower down the field and many had big rating gains from this tournament - the best of which was Max Ruan who gained 63 rating points with his 3.5/7... Other lower rated players who are not juniors, also performed well to gain some hard earned rating points too....

Hi everyone. No allegro this weekend due to the ANZAC Day weekender. What will start however (by popular demand) is "Fantasy Allegro". Just a fun competition, no prize money or anything. The rules are as follows:

1. Pick your team of 10 players (cant be more or less, must be 10) from the players below on the rating list.

2. Your 10 players together must fit inside the Salary Cap of $15000 (ie 15000 rating points). Dont be like the Melbourne Storm - salary cap cheats will be banned from the competition..... The following rating list will be the one that counts eg. if you take Michael Addamo, he will be priced at $1707 - not his old rating of $1697.... Same with all players.

3. Pick a captain. Your captains points will be doubled. Thus if you had Michael Baron as captain and he scored 6 points, you would get 12 for him.

4. Send in your team to me at grantszuveges@gmail.com no later than midnight each Friday. Make mention who your captain is (highlighted, bold, stated etc)

5. For the rest of the year, starting after next weekends allegro (Sat 1st May), you can trade up to 20 players. But once you have sent me your trades, they stand, you cant take them back...... Same with naming your captain for the week.

6. If you dont send your team in each Friday, it will remain the same as the previous week, and your captain wont change. In other words, only send me an email if your team changes. If it stays the same, no need to email me.

7. Your best 7 players scores count, so dont worry if not all of your players play each week. When I say "best 7", Im referring to their scores, not their ratings, so if you had 6 players score 4 points and then a player rated 1100 score 3 and a player rated 1700 score 2.5, you would get the points for the player scoring 3 - even though that players rating is lower.

Im happy to answer any of your questions. Here are the ratings which all players will start out with. Can someone please put them into a nice format so that people can read them better? I wish I knew how to do it.... Check your players rating, number of games and how many allegros they have played! Its not much use having a 2600 rated grandmaster in your team if they only play 2 allegros per year!!!

Good luck!

One last thing about Fantasy Allegro.

The spirit in which this game is played is supposed to be a fun one. While we want our players to play well, it is important that the MCC brand name is protected, and that all players playing in MCC tournaments are treated with respect.

Therefore, any abuse of, derogatory remarks about or excessive criticism of players (particularly juniors) for "underperforming" by "Fantasy Coaches" on this thread will result in the disqualification of the offenders team from the game.

Good luck!

Non-attendance by some former team members has led to drastic action by the manager - some players have been replaced. Their contracts have been torn up!

The new team is as follows.

1. James Morris IM 2248
2. Michael Baron FM 2240 (captain)
3. FrankLekkas 1733
4. Michael Addamo 1707
5. Jack Puccini (1442)
6. Ben Frayle (1367)
7. Elizabeth Warren 1181
8. Nicholas Schroeder (1090)
9. Sohith Singamsetti (1027)
10. Sreemanth Gurram (846)

Total Salary: $14,881. Under the cap!

Hoping some of the team will be getting some chess practice in at MCC this weekend!

You will not have to pick an entire new team. All you will need to do is stay under the salary cap. At this stage, your team is 167 points over - so you will need to downgrade one of your players to somebody 167 or more points lower than them.... Congratulations on the 79 point rating jump too! Keep playing well!

This had to be the most interesting allegro ever. You had the two tournament favourites (Morris & Baron) losing in the second round. Also third seed, Fitzpatrick was defeated by Tony Tosevski leading to a top seed-less top two boards.

In round 3 Tony Tosevski took the lead defeating Kozo Simutanyi, while on 2 Kolak and F. Lekkas had a draw. By the end of round 4, the only people left undefeated were Tony Tosevski (4/4) and Frank Lekkas (3.5/4) after Lekkas defeated Partsi, Tosevski defeated Urban and Kolak lost to Baron.

Round 5 saw Lekkas defeating Tosevski to take the lead while Baron, Simutanyi and Morris were busy making their fightback. Fitzpatrick held a draw against Morris in a very controversial ending where the clocks turned off in a drawn position, but had Morris in time trouble. While Baron and Simutanyi both won their games.

Baron took back his place at top of the standings in round 6 with a win over Lekkas in a fairly exciting pirc opening. Ultimately, Lekkas' sacrifices weren't enough and Baron went on to win. Simutanyi applied the pressure to Kolak who couldn't hold onto his position, eventually conceding the point. Partsi was able to defeat Fitzpatrick in probably the longest game of the tournament keeping himself in the hunt for prize money. Tosevski's excellent start gave way as he was unable to consolidate against his higher rated counterparts.

In the final round, the clash everyone had been waiting for, Baron - Morris took place on board 1. Baron took the full point, thus winning the tournament on 6/7. Partsi defeated Tony Tosevski, pulling off a very nice swindle in a supposed losing ending. This secured second place for him. On board 3, the battle for =2nd was taking place between F. Lekkas and Simutanyi. After conceeding a pawn, Lekkas got onto the offensive and managed to draw the ending. This meant Simutanyi and Lekkas would tie for =3rd.

In the B group (U/1700), David Stimson had a great tournament. He defeated Addamo (1700) in round 3, and Puccini, an up and coming junior in the following round. His 3 loses were against the 2ndd, 4th and 5th seeds. He finished on 4/7, winning his rating group alongside Krunic.

Congratulations to the prize winners, and good luck to those participating in the Fantasy allegro.

Well done Captain Michael! Double points for my captain and I did not need a Vice Captain. Great win, Michael.

But the fact that I'm now at 1197 without putting in any more time to studying or without getting a coach suggests that the ratings may be too high.

You don't need a coach or need to put more time in to improve. You're just beating better players/winning more games.

In the pre-season my initial team went over the 15,000 part, thanks mostly to the brilliant efforts of myself :P. As a result I had to pick a new team. The way Adamski worded his post suggested that I might have to do it again.

Your team stays the same - if your players prices go over the cap, thats good - thats what you want! It means that you have more money to play with.... You can trade players if you want, but you only get 20 trades....

So, how will the trading work, say that I want to trade Sohith, what would be the highest rated player that I could trade him for?

A great day for me, winning 4.5/7! Except of course for the Milutin Krunic incident, where I tried to claim a draw, and he got very upset at me for stopping the clock:uhoh: . In fantasy allegro terms, Fitzpatrick didn't show up (again) and he is probably going to be traded as a result of his recent poor attendance.

It's a secret formula devised by Grant late at night in his secret laboratory in his basement that nobody else has ever seen, and nobody else ever will. Don't expect anyone to be getting their hands on that top secret formula any time soon!

C'mon let's work it out, like so many points for a win or loss or draw vs a stronger or weaker player, calculate the rating diff, can't be harder than them Fibos I used to do, they don't have to be accurate either. a reasonable approximation give or take 100 points will do!

As far as I know he uses the FIDE system.

Jack, Frank, Elliot, etc

I actually do use the FIDE system, but with a few minor differences. My system is basically the same system that was used for the ACF ratings in the late 1990s (and early 2000s) pre-Glicko. There are a few differences however:

1. In that old ACF system, there was a cutoff of 336 rating points, meaning that if you played someone more than 336 higher or lower than you, that game would be rated as if the player was 336 higher/lower. Eg, if you were rated 1000, and you played someone 1508, they would only count as 1336. In the MCC Allegro system, that number is 300 (not 336), and it is only used for players lower than you. Eg, if a 1000 played a 2000, then the 1000s game would be rated as if the opponent was 2000 but the 2000s game would be rated with the 1000 as 1700. What this means is that the ratings will gradually go up over time, but Im happy to wear that because the players (particularly the juniors) are improving all the time and this should make up for any points lost against the up and coming players. For the first year of MCC Allegro, I didnt have any 300/336 rule and all games were rated as if the players ratings were exactly what they were, but we were finding that the top players were losing rating points even when they were scoring 6.5 / 7! It was very hard for anyone over 1700 to gain rating points. Michael Baron lost over 100 points that year despite winning most allegros - many with 7/7... The players under 1000 were dragging down everyones ratings....

2. We start people off with their ACF or FIDE rating and go from there, unless they are rated under 900, in which case they start as unrated and get a rating from their first allegro. If we/they dont know exactly their ACF rating, it starts at a round figure, eg. if they think that it is about 1600, (maybe 1608), we start them at 1600.....

So, for people who dont understand any of this, you get the average of the rated opponents you played, then find the difference between that average and your rating (eg, 117 points). We then check the chart and work out how many points you should score against that field. Say for example you should score 4.2 points. If you scored 5 points, then we do this sum:

(I think that the forum wont let me send this part of the email as the formula may be similar to something - when I try to send it, it says it is forbidden!?)

As in the old ACF system that this is based on, there are also bonus points - given if you score 1 or more points more than what you should have, eg. if you are supposed to score 4.2 and you score 7 points, then the sum would be as follows:

(I dont think it is letting me send this part either)

Hopefully people can understand what Im talking about.....

I think that this system is quite a good one and it seems to give fairly accurate ratings to people. There seem to be very few players whose ratings are too high or too low and it is rare for players to have big gains or drops in one event. (Eden McGorlick and Finley Dale were exceptions a few weeks ago) unless they are genuinely improving or playing very well.... Basically people have ratings similar to what people generally think that their strength is.

As Ive said earlier, we also adjust the ratings every week (after each allegro) so they change regularly, meaning that players can track their ratings over time as a guide to how they may be playing. I also think that this is important because kids who start out get a rating after their first ever event and this provides some extra incentive for them - for a few weeks anyway until this novelty wears off - but they are hooked by then anyway...

I cant wait to see whose ratings went up or down after this weeks allegro!

Well done Michael and James.

I noticed that Michael Addamo is indeed otherwise occupied chesswise, so I am droping him from the Blues for the time being. His replacement will be Chris Kolak, since it appears there is no salary cap to worry about now! Is that right?

Ill be playing next week it is just that i have been sick, had exams and been playing in nick specks tournament so i will only play just over half of them, still probably not enough to keep in your team though

Thanks for that. I hope you are fully recovered now. Good luck over the board.

Here is a game I played against Max in today's Allegro, posted it here because I though it was an interesting game.
Event: MCC Allegro 66
Site: Melbourne Chess Club
Date: 2010.06.12
Round: 7
White: Jack Hughes
Black: Max Ruan
Result: 1-0

1. d4 d5 2. e3 c6?! (It is difficult to see the point of this move.) 3. Bd3 e6?! (A semislav setup is weak against the stonewall, his bishop is just as bad as mine!) 4. f4 Nf6 5. Nd2 Bd6 6. Ngf3 O-O 7. O-O Nbd7 8. Ne5 Re8 9. Rf3 Bxe5? (Another mistake from my opponent, now the f6 square cannot be accessed by his knights, making h7 critically weak. Additionally my pieces can now drop to f4 if necessary, which is the case in the game.) 10. fxe5 Nh5? (Better was Ne4, where white is only about one pawn better.) 11. Rh3 g6 12. Rxh5! (Sacrificing a rook for a knight and pawn is the easiest and most aggressive way to attack these weakened dark squares, even Firebird, which; like all engines is notorious for it's materialism evaluates this to be over half a pawn better for white.) 12... gxh5 13. Qxh5 Nf8 14. Nf3 Re7 15. Ng5 f5?? 16. Bd2?? (Better was exf6, where white is easily won.) 16... Qc7 17. Bb4 Ng6 18. Bxe7 Qxe7 19. Rf1 Qg7 20. Rf3 h6 21. Nh3 Bd7 22. Rg3 Be8 23. Nf4 Kh7 24. Nxe6 (Max resigned because after Qf7 comes:)24... Qf7 25. Bxf5 Qg8 (If instead an arbitrary move, then Bxg6, where Qxg6 runs into Nf8+, picking up the queen.) 26. Nf4 (And the Knight is dropping due to the pins.)

Ng5 was indeed strong, however we need to observe Lasker's rule, and Bxf5 is completely winning for white.

She is pretty good isn't she? I saw one of her games, she was beating some regularly high scoring players.
