do seeds 2 and 3 have ACF or FIDE ratings ?

I can see the numbers you've posted but I can't see them anywhere else on the net.

I would say they only have fide ratings. Though there fide acts as there starting rating for acf ratings.

If its a provisional rating than the field should be blank and them put in seed 2 and 3. It would be deceptive and dubious of the organizer to put false ratings in, especially if people are entering to play for a fide rating, very inethical

especially if people are entering to play for a fide rating, very inethicalDunno what "inethical" is but I don't think anyone can get a FIDE rating from this event alone, even if they do meet all FIDE rated opponents.

It's standard practice to give players estimated ratings. Not only is it standard practice but the general conventions for swiss tournaments from the fide handbook says that arbiters are to give an estimated rating to all those they can.

Dunno what "inethical" is but I don't think anyone can get a FIDE rating from this event alone, even if they do meet all FIDE rated opponents.
Being a seven round event, players are only able to get fide blocks. A player may be able to get a fide rating from this tournament if it is their final fide block and have 8 games or so already met. They need 9 fide rated games against fide rated opponents in total to get their first fide rating.

do seeds 2 and 3 have ACF or FIDE ratings ?Player 2, Mirsad Berbic has said to me that he had a fide rating of around 2000 about ten years ago but only has played in the 2009 Broadbeach Tournament since then. His name does not appear on the fide rating list in any form, but from the information tendered I thought it better to put him in with the 2000 rating for seeding purposes, rather than as an unrated as clearly he can 'play a bit'.

Player 3, Rodrigo. The 1926 rating is his Chilean official rating. He has no fide rating, but when I compared other players from the Chilean official rating list who do have fide ratings and similar Chilean ratings 1900-2000, he would most likely also have a fide rating around the same number.

So his estimated rating is the 1926 as per his Chilean rating.

It would be deceptive and dubious of the organizer to put false ratings in, especially if people are entering to play for a fide rating, very inethicalIf you believe I have done something deceptive and dubious, then first of all you should write to me by email and express exactly what you think I have done that is dubious and unethical.

To slam any organiser on an open forum, does nothing for that particular tournament, especially when you had other options open to you ie writing to me formally and making a complaint.

I am running this tournament all by myself because no one else wants to run a tournament over the Australia Day Weekend in Qld, especially in Brisbane. I see it is a large gap in the calendar to have four days available and to not use them for something other than another 60 + 10 tournament.

I think it is poor form in the extreme to slam an organiser, especially when you are wrong and when they are providing you with exactly what you want, a tournament with long time controls and it being fide rated. Also for players above 1750 ACF, they have no other ACF rated weekend tournaments in Qld until April.

It is very difficult to feel helpful towards any poster who slams organisers on open forums, especially as I said, when attacking on an open forum is their first choice, rather than last. I have noted as well that from my recollection this is not the first time you have engaged in this type of behaviour.

:hmm: must be an national rating of some sort.I have been doing some more searching. In the 2009 Broadbeach Mall rapid tournament, Berbic scored 5/7 and his performance rating would be around 1900+.

Amir had him listed as BIH, which would be Bosnia. The more I search for further information, the less clear it becomes what rating I should put him in. I am currently of the opinion that I will keep him at 2058 as that is the rating he played under in the rapid and is the last information I have available.

That information could be useless as the real question is where did that supposed 2058 rating come from in the first place as it does not appear to be a FIDE rating.I am suspecting that it is a local elo rating from when he used to play in Bosnia.

The only other information he has provided is:

I used to play while living in Europe. my last rating was above ELO 2000 in 1998. In February 1999. I came to Australia and played only Brisbane club winter tournament 2000 and won it with 3,5 out of 4.
Since i didn't play serious chess / only on the net /.
Last year I played the broadbeach tournament and told them about that asking to play among rated players, so they give that rating to me provisionaly. I got 5 points out of 7, finishing at the 6-th place.
My best rating was in Germany in year 2005 about ELO 2150 +. but i came to Australia and didn't play so it is lost.

I just went through the German rating files as best I could and could not find a mention of Mirsad Berbic at all.

Hi

2058 keeps popping up in his tournament crosstables and it is listed here.

http://www.unix-ag.uni-kl.de/~chess/dwz/dwzliste.txt

Dont ask me which list this is though. I'm thinking he might be unrated for fide and acf purposes, but not sure as hes unrated in tournaments with fide ratings

From following the discussion and playing through some of his games I don't think 2000 or 2058 would be a bad estimate.

At the moment either estimate would put him on top anyway wouldn't it ?

cheers

I thought I found every stupid way possible to draw games in Sydney.

Forgetting basic endgame theory.
Not winning endgames 2 pawns up.
Dropping a piece cold.
Getting move orders wrong in opening theory.

But I never agreed to any draws where I had a forced mate in 8 !!

I was short of time and was happy I had a perpertual (so I thought).

thanks everyone.

It was a good way to get out of the summer heat and nice to play a few new faces.

Kai Tan didn't play the last round because he and Justin had a plane to catch later that evening he and didn't want to risk a late late finish.

cheers
Garrett.

Yes, I was very tempted to play on but would have been anxiously looking at the time during the game instead of thinking! I enjoyed our game (they are always interesting) and congratulations on your great performance! Your under-rated FIDE rating should get a boost....

An excellent result against that field.

Barry Cox's Glicko 1 calculator, which is rather accurate given the ACF ratings use glicko2, gives you an increase of 18 points.

Nakauchi= - 1.8
Al Zaher= + 16.9
Young= + 0.8
Kospartov= + 1.9

If you check out the more detailed results on the CAQ website, you'll see that the ratings calculation doesn't include the games against unrated players. For Cameron, the win against Lalo will probably add another 20 points to his rating.
