Note that these events are limited to players under 1700 ACF rating.

The Knox Festival is a blast! Lots of fun and entertainment - not counting the chess of course!

ALSO, for this Saturday 27th Feb, from 10am at the same venue, there will be free basic chess coaching, chess DVDs playing and a mid-size giant (?) chess set for anyone to use (you do not need to be a mid-size giant).

A record 61 entries were received for the Ranges Rookies Shield Lightning Chess Tournament held on Sunday 28th Feb as part of the Knox Festival. Sadly, because of space limitations, we had no room for seven other last minute entries. Our sincere apologies to those who missed out competing in this competition - we do hope you will come back for the next Rookies Shield on May 2nd when there will be room for everyone. (At next year's Knox Festival the Council organisers have indicated that they will cater for us with more space AND look at sponsoring a Knox Festival Cup with additional prize-money!). But this also shows the benefit to one and all if you please register online before the day!

Despite the cramped conditions everyone joined in the competition with good spirit. Some upsets happened when players overlooked a check, made an illegal move, pressed their clock and so allowed their opponent to claim a win. All part of the fun of Lightning (5 minute) chess.

But after the 9 rounds had been completed it was 'the usual suspects' who took top honours: 12 year-old Joseph Wong beat adults and juniors alike to take out 1st in the Open Section on a score of 8, Greg Albarracin was 2nd on 7.5, and Bruce Simpson came 3rd on 7. Ruihong Lu, also on 7 earned 1st in the U14 and Top Girl honours. Three players scored 6.5: Karl Zelesco showed his talent by coming 1st in U12, Serif Tuglaci was 1st in the Adults section, and once again Ethan Lim was among the leaders and won the U8. Vinay Lakshman won the U16 section with 6 points and newcomer Carl Dingfelder won the Under 10s with a score of 4.5.

The cinema tickets prizes went to Joshua Devarajh who was the Lucky Entrant prizewinner and to Rose Kelly and Angus McConnell who earned the Encouragement Awards.

Many of our Ranges club members gave their time to help throughout the competition, and on the Saturday, for which I am very grateful. It was a real team effort. Thanks, guys!

There was very little separating the top contenders in all the age divisions of this hard fought tournament. Forty-three players braved the cold rainy weather and the close results and number of draws reflected the high standard of play.

14 year-old Damar Bull-Quijano won his final round game against the new adult contender, Claude Romete, to finish outright leader on 6 out of 7 (five wins, two draws) and was crowned 'King of the Mountain' for 2010. 12 year-old Denise Lim retained her 'Queen of the Mountain' title with 4.5 out of 7, placing her just ahead of Ruihong Lu on countback.

Just an amazing number of entrants!

BIGGEST ROOKIES SHIELD TURNOUT EVER!

It was an exciting problem to have - not enough chess sets to cover the 86 entrants in our biggest ever tournament! But once we sorted out that problem everyone seemed to really enjoy the atmosphere of good fun and tough competition.

Last year's Rookies Shield Champion, Joseph Wong, proved that he is still the one to beat by remaining undefeated and finishing on 7 wins out of seven rounds. Joshua Devarajh came in second in the Open on 6, having only lost one game to Reginald Chong, the winner of the Adult division. Young Ethan Lim decided he was tired of only winning the Under 8 trophies and he nailed 3rd place in the Open with good wins against some of the toughest opponents.

Two others were also on a score of 6: new comer Chang Zhang was the top Under 14 player very closely followed by Karl Zelesco as the Under 12 winner. Denise Lim was ranked just ahead of Ruihong Lu on 5 wins. Jamie Cook became the Under 16 winner on 4.5 and on the same score Mingus Go-yang took out the Under 10 trophy and prize money. Althea Wong (yes, sister to Joseph) showed that she is a rising star by winning the Under 8 with a personal best of 4.5.

A big thank you musxt once again go to all the helpers at this successful event - especially Frits, Tom, Peter, Graham, PohChoo, Esther, and Priya - and to Yew Sze as Director of Play. Your help was essential with the high number of entries.

This year's Rookies Shield series is heading towards an exciting conclusion at the final round on November 14th.

Please see the attached flyer about the forthcoming final Rookies Shield competition for this year. We hope for a good representation from the club and our friends at this event on Sunday afternoon 14/11 at the Ferntree Gully library. However, please note that we do have a rating limit which limits participation to those who have a ACF classic rating below 1700 at the start of the year.

If you can enter, please do so on-line at www.rangeschessclub.com.au well before the day so we have a good idea of numbers.

Hope to see you there.

Warm regards,

Paul Bearup,
Director of Play,
Ranges Chess Club.
