If my memory serves me well there was an endorsement of about AUS$1000 by FIDE for an Australasian Masters Tournament.
Is it still on? Or shall we wait until after the CV AGM for further announcements?

It must be over forty years since I last saw Roger Nokes. I will certainly endeavour to meet him during the tournament.

I strongly believe that the newly elected CV committee should promote this tournament in this Forum at once.
By promoting I mean all details of the tournament published here as well as publication of current games, screening of DGT boards etc.
If coverage of this very important event continues the way it goes now (ie "it was posted on another forum on behalf" etc) by non committee members, while other information is pubilshed elsewhere by committee members (by proxy), shows bias, luck of professionalism and last but not least irresponsibilty!
Correct this unacceptable situation now!

MCC????
I asked the same question, IM James Morris assured me it was going to be played at BHCC.
By the way James spent most of his time this morning (most of the time I was there anyway) encouraging, congratulating, analysing with the other juniors in the Australian Schools Championships at Scotch College! I hope his presence, efforts and spirit of solidarity, particularly when he could have spent his time resting and preparing for his own very important tournament, would be recognised by all!

Round 2 early upset result.

Morris-Levi 0-1 (23 moves)

Is this really an upset as such, or just surprise at a quick black win in a relatively even matchup? Levi outrates Morris by 21 points on ACF ratings and 42 points on FIDE ratings. James has had some amazing performances in 2009 but he is not yet at the level where he should be expected to consistently perform at 2400+.

I think that this is the case since Leonid has also included the No of moves, but that's only my opinion! I think the CV Pres will clarify his comment!

Its because I played sooooo ridiculously badly, that it was a massive suprise. I played like a 1400, maybe even worse...

I played Nh6 and he chopped straight away so am very interested in this game....

cheers

The web site shows it's a tightly bunched field at the moment. Spread from 3 to 1.5 points out of 4. Several players could still win it.

If James keeps playing well ACF selectors should think hard about fitting him into the Olympiad team.

You heard it here first.

I had the same thought. Zhao, Smerdon are absolute certainties. Wohl is as well if he maintains the form he has shown for all of this year. Johansen surely would not miss out either. That leaves one spot. I guess Solomon and Xie are most likely, but James has certainly shown great form and if he can play like he is in the Masters and gets a very strong Aus Champs performance he must be a real chance.

I think white's 34th is where black really starts winning, the reason black gets away with ...f4 being that the pawn is protected by the threat of ...Qf5+ forking. To that point, a complex strategic tussle.

It's a shame we don't have a reliable way to transmit the moves of our great game in real time. cheers Garrett.

We do but the equipment needs to be treated with care!

Some chess players and organisers can't even look after their motor cars never mind DGT Electronic Boards! :(

Johanson atypically blew a won position; his opponent played for a draw with the exchange French, and as is often the case, found himself worse early on.

A well-played positional crush by Solo; White needed a draw but it looked like he played far too defensively. E.g. it would be a lot better to have the N on c3 than d2; a closed Benoni with e4,d5,c4 v e5,d6,c5 would be much better than the structure in the game (just e4, c4 v e5,d5) since the space advantage would compensate for the bad B and there would be no accessible hole on d4; and after 19... f5, it might have been better to mess it up with 20.exf5 e4 21. Re1 gxf5 then retreat both minors. After 21... Ng7 in the game, I doubt that White can hold: he is weak on dark squares, and as Bronstein pointed out, this eventually leads to weakness on the light squares too, as the pieces on those squares have nowhere to hide from the pressure.

Thanks all. I played well in the last three rounds, and was lucky enough to win it with 6.5/9.:) It was a pity both Mirko Rujevic and Vladimir Smirnov had to pull out; they would have made it tougher.

That's nice of you Lee, but Guy might have me covered there:D ; ... aren't race horses retired to stud?

Alex Wohl is up there too, I was just planning to beat him on top board in the last round of the 2052 Doeberl Cup, for my first victory in that prestigious tournament!

Actually I got back to Brissie this arvo and had a 2.5 km swim between 6.45 - 7.45 PM, very pleasant in the hot weather here. My father feeds me too much in Melbourne (:) I'm not complaining), now I might be right for my squash match tomorrow night.

I meant Phar Lap in the sense of having the largest heart in Australian Chess, rather than ability as a stud. And I'm not sure that Guy has 'retired' either...;)

Though you are the good catholic with 13 kids, so your ability in that department might not be so bad, Maestro :owned:

The BHCC newsletter has a report on this tournament, where there is a natural emphasis on their own players.

"However some good CV news The Australasian Masters. A successful tournament well organized by CV president Leonid Sandler with the support of our own Trevor Stanning. Apart from the usual sponsors of this event the tournament was also financial supported by FIDE [!!]. It was won by Stephen Solomon the Australian Champion who got his start at the Box Hill Chess Club all those years ago. FM Bobby Cheng our under 12 world championship hero did well. Not such a great tournament for our Tuesday and Sunday Coach GM Darryl Johansen who lost the last 2 rounds. Pretty unusual for Darryl to lose 2 games in a row."

A surprise that the success story of the tournament, who has just won the BHCC rookies cup for 2009 didn't get a mention:hmm:

Hello everyone,

It seems that the exploits of the most promising junior in Australia, International Master James Morris, have extended beyond the boundaries of our country. Today I came across a story in the local free train paper, MX, which I have since found multiple mentions of on the net. The story in general revolves around a multi-denominational sect in India which is seeking to alleviate the plight of young women in the sex trade. The connection became apparent to me upon seeing the following line

"More than 1,000 followers of a multi-religious sect in northern India have pledged to marry female sex workers who want to escape exploitation.

Young Hindu, Muslim and Sikh men have been queuing up at the Dera Sacha Sauda (Abode of the Real Deal) in the town of Sirsa as "wedding volunteers". ( my bolding)

full story here

If the above story is accurate, then it seems to me that James would be proud to accept credit for improving the rights of women, as he is a very moral young man, who would not approve of anyone being traded as a human commodity,

Take care and God Bless, Malcolm

:hmm: A little too Oz-centric!

--- Dr Roger Nokes is an FM (for over 25 years) and has no 'a' in his name.

--- And Bobby and James haven't had the respective titles FM and IM ratified by FIDE yet - although I suspect the chorus about their titles being 'soft' will soon abate ;)

It need not; "X,Y and Z won soft zonal titles" is logically compatible with "X and Y later equalled or surpassed the normal requirements for the title", and is supported by "Z never played at the title standards in his life".
