Just posting a thread about this so people know the date is 28 Nov not 21 Nov. I have not as yet received an entry form but imagine one is not too far away.

I don't know if there is one KB - so I'll ask Club President Dallas Fry about it.

It was originally scheduled for Nov 21 and is still listed on the TCA website as Nov 21 though I have recently sent an email about that.

I think the event dates/details are sorted now (Garvinator will be relieved).

People can enter on the day Nov 28 if they wish. Details (with entry form at the bottom) posted on the TCA website here: http://www.chesstasmania.org.au/events/rapid3_09.htm

No news a fortnight out from this event but I'll see what I can rustle up ...

I am looking for a lift up and back from Hobart on the day if anyone is going. Can contribute to petrol costs.

10 days out: Leo says he has four paid entries (sorry, I forgot to ask who but at least one is a young Launceston junior) with Kevin Bonham, Marcus Bretag and Lawrence Bretag also expressing some interest. Russell Horton is bound to bring a few NW juniors with him so I think the field will grow from a core of around 10-12 players to the usual 20 or so.

I've been asked to run a coaching session for juniors immediately after the event, so I'm expecting some entries from juniors.

Likely entries so far (based on inquiries): Alastair Dyer, Lawrence Bretag, Marcus Bretag, Dallas Fry, Russell Horton, Vincent Horton, Tony Dowden

No word from Garvinator yet though ;)

I have it on good authority that there are some serious negotiations going on regarding conditions

Wow, Leo was quiet on that one :)

Just warning that we can only offer six flavours of yoghurt and you will have to arrange transport of your custom-made chair yourself. (Can guarantee four seasons in one day though).

So how does the grand prix point system work? Last time I got =2nd with Kevin Hendry and thus got fewer than 11 points. What is the ratio here?

If there is a tie for a number of positions then the points available for all those positions are pooled and shared equally - same as in the ACF's Grand Prix.

So second is 11 and third is 9 so =2nd with one other is (11+9)/2=10.

Current points standings are at http://chesschat.org/showthread.php?p=250551#post250551

Thank you Kevin. Looking like quite a tight pack really. I will have to fight for at worst second and in competition with my brother. And does all the money go to the 1st player?

No. In the U18 there will be prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd at least.

For U12 there will certainly be a prize for 1st; I am not sure about others yet.

I am still not sure whether I will be there or not; if necessary cheques will be posted out.

OK, looks like I'll be there now - coming up with Mellissa Harvey who I believe will be bringing Jamie Briant, Owen Short and possibly others.

One day out
The Bretag boys are camping in out table tennis room downstairs (hmm, playing tt at the moment it seems) - so we have at least 2x Bretags, 2x Hortons, 2x Briant/Owen, KB and myself.

Very surprising if Tassie GP leader Alastair Dyer didn't also show. Actually theres rumours of around 20 players, so its looking good.

I was trying to win my games - honest - but in two of my drawn games I had to stave off defeat.

:hmm: Ten years ago I was a dangerous rapid player but those days seem to have gone (sigh).

I either recorded or reconstructed all my games except alas for my extremely silly loss to Marcus.

Bonham - Sturges. Tony does sometimes cause problems with his expert knowledge of some of the strange openings he plays so I was rather pleased with my play in this one.

1.c4 d5 2.cxd5 Qxd5 3.Nc3 Qa5 4.d4 Nf6 5.Bd2 c6 6.e4 Bg4 7.Qb3 Qb6 8.Bc4 Qxb3 9.Bxb3 e6 10.f3 Bh5 11.Nge2 Nbd7 12.h4! h6 13.e5 Nd5 14.Nxd5 cxd5 15.Nf4 Bg6 16.Nxg6 fxg6 17.Rc1 Rb8 18.Ke2 Be7 19.Rc2 0-0 20.Rc7 Rfd8 21.Ba4 b5 22.Bc2 Kf7 23.Rxa7 b4 24.Rc1 Bxh4? 25.Ba4 Ke7 26.Rcc7 h5 27.Rxd7+ Rxd7 28.Rxd7+ Kf8 29.Rd6 Kf7 30.Bd7 Bg3 31.Bxe6+ Kf8 32.Bg5 h4 33.Rd8+ Rxd8 34.Bxd8 1-0

Fry - Bonham. Lucky to get away with this, the middlegame was very interesting.

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2 Nf6 4.Bd3 c5 5.c3 Nc6 6.e5 Nd7 7.Ne2 cxd4 8.cxd4 f6 9.f4 This is bad but I just forgot what to do here! 9...Bb4 [9...fxe5 forces 10.dxe5 (10.fxe5? Nxd4 wins pawn) 10...Qb6 and black is at least equal] 10.a3 Ba5 11.0-0 Bb6 12.Nf3 fxe5 13.fxe5 Ndxe5 Thematic but white gets some compensation. 14.Bb5 Nxf3+ 15.Rxf3 Bd7 [15...e5] 16.Bxc6 bxc6 17.Kh1 Rf8 18.Rg3 Qf6 19.Bf4 g6 20.Bd6 Rf7 21.Rf3 Qg7 22.Rxf7 Qxf7 23.Qf1 Qf5 24.g4? Bonham - L Bretag

1.e4 g6 2.Nf3 d6 3.c4 Nf6 4.d3 I often find English setups against the Pirc, whether good or not, are confusing for opponents not expecting them. 4...Bg7 5.Bg5 Bg4 6.Be2 Nbd7 7.Qd2 h6 8.Bh4 c6 9.Nc3 e5 10.h3 Bxf3 11.Bxf3 Qc7 12.0-0 h5 13.Be2 0-0-0 14.f4 exf4 15.Qxf4 Qb6+ 16.Qf2 Qxb2? [I analysed 17...Qc2 quite a lot but after 18.Qxa7 Qxe2 19.Rab1 black is clearly smashed] 18.Qxa7 Nc5?? 19.Nb6+ 1-0

M Carter - Bonham. Mason's attack was almost enough, just not quite.
