For all 2009 ACF GP events the forfeit time is 1 hour.

Bill - where is this information found? I realise that different GP events have different game times (such as 60/75/90 minutes, with 60 being the minimum) but I thought the organiser could choose an appropriate forfeit time, usually based on the game times, that could be less than 60 minutes.

Since events at the start of the year were under the 23005 FIDE Laws with its forfeit time of 1 hour then this was adopted for all ACF GP events for 2009.

For 2010 the ACF GP forfeit time will be 30 minutes.

Thanks Bill - perhaps this 30 minute factoid could go onto the 2010 GP web site somewhere - or some way of letting all the GP organisers know about it?

1hour, 0.5 hour whatever. In a tournament that has more than 1 round a day. It is a good policy to get there on time. Then you can find out who your opponent is and think about what you want to play

Due to the wonderful donation response from the friends of the Box Hill Chess Club we are now able to increase the total prize fund to $1500 in line with last year's prizes. So we now have these changes from the first concept:
1st prize $500
2nd prize $250
3rd prize $150
6 ratings prizes at $100.
We now have 1hr forfeit time.
We have class 2 grand prix rating.
Let us hope we get many entries soon

With the entry of Sam Chow [2007 Joint winner] Entries are starting to flow . Sam being a BHCC member pays an entry fee is $30! This surely must be best value in town. Did I really set the fees as low as that? What was I thinking of. Come and join Sam and me. Enter early and often. Gerry

We have secured the entries from Eugene Schön and Justin Tan both of whom will be great assets to the tournament, however Bobby Cheng will be away on a family holiday in New Zealand. I hope they are proud of him over there as well

We have received entries over the last few days from Zachary Loh, Jorg Wallmueller among others. Who is the strong mystery player who may be going to enter. Even publicist does not know his identity.

Why not enter during the Chess Victoria Blitz this afternoon.

By reading anther thread on here, it seems for FIDE events that:

0.4 The tournaments to be rated must be pre-registered by the federation that will be responsible for the sending of results and rating fees. The tournament must be registered one month before the tournament starts. The Qualification Commission Chairman may refuse to register an event. Also he may allow an event to be rated which has been registered less than one month before the tournament starts.

So I went to this FIDE site (http://www.fide.com/calendar/tournaments?view=calendar&gy=1) and could not find this event registered (note that I found the Doeberl on there for April 2010)... One of the main reasons I entered this was because it was going to be FIDE rated.

Now all is not lost, as it says above that "must be pre-registered by the federation that will be responsible for the sending of results and rating fees", so I am assuming it is the ACF in this case (well, all Aus cases). So can someone, either at the ACF or BHCC, please confirm its registration with FIDE - this may all be well in hand, just not obvious. I know it is a small details, but it could be crucial for some...

Hi SHump,

I can confirm that this tournament is pre-registered with FIDE. Please see the current AUS registrations (http://ratings.fide.com/tournament_list.phtml?moder=ev_code&country=AUS) rather than the FIDE calendar (the listing on which is at the organisers' discretion).

On some related matters: there are no problems with the structure of the tournament and I had always pencilled it in as soon as I saw the initial post by Publicist on 22/10/2009. There have been some recent changes to the server such that it is not possible to put an arbiter in the registration field unless they have a FIDE ID, but I have since discovered a work-around (although I will still need to add the arbiter info when this becomes available).

I would remind all FIDE-rated organisers that they must communicate all necessary details - arbiter(s), organiser(s), time controls, exact dates of all rounds and tournament format - to me at the earliest opportunity if they want to guarantee the tournament will be FIDE rated (assuming it qualifies as FIDE rateable, of course). The details can be edited later if necessary up until the tournament starts.

Hi Mike,

Sorry, I only just saw your post now. To answer your question, there is no chance of this being rated on the Jan 2010 list.

The rules are changing all the time as FIDE gradually accelerates the system. The current rule is that the tournament must officially finish more than 7 days before the list date, with the exception of FIDE's own tournaments (i.e. tournaments organised by or on behalf of FIDE).

So in the case of the January 2010 list, unless the tournament is officially over before Santa gets to the bottom of the chimney on Dec 24, it goes to the March list. :)

FIDE has now updated the relevant part of the handbook (http://www.fide.com/fide/handbook?id=72&view=article) (see 7.13).

Greg

Why not play the last Rookies Cup this afternoon and enter the Canterbury Summer Swiss at the same time.

You can pick up a Box Hill calendar for 2010 as well. Hopefully it will be up on the web in a few days time.

will any half point byes be allowed?

I had been hoping no one would ask.
The tournament organizer is a relic from the Purdy era. when it was unheard of to ask for a bye let alone asking for a half point for not playing.
The tournament organizer also recognizes that those days have long gone but he still believes there should be some limitation to the present tendency to give anyone who does not feel like turning up a 1/2 point
In this tournament the arbiter will be empowered to give a 0.5 bye [one only]
1 if there are special circumstances for a player needing a bye
2 if the request is for round 5 or earlier.
3 if the player has a reasonable expectancy for a 50% score in the tournament.

looks like Illingworth and Morris have one last chance to slug it out for the Junior Grand prix prize.

Should be worth following.

I just read the thread and it appears there will be live coverage - cool !!

cheers

I would like to enter this event. I would have entered before Christmas, if I would have realised the event was on.

See those playing tomorrow.

Go James!

Go James!
I would understand that cheer in a zonal, but isn't it strange in a tourney where James is already a favorite (getting 2305 soon)? Okay maybe you are a personal friend, Thunderspirit, so in that sense it makes perfect sense ...

Who am I to judge, anyhow? :uhoh:

GL in the tourney Lee, I wish I could play in it but I feared that I would be to tired for the Aus major if I did.

See you at Monday nights,

It appears that accelerated pairings are being used in Round 1.
For how many rounds will the acceleration be applied?

It appears that accelerated pairings are being used in Round 1. For how many rounds will the acceleration be applied?
It would have been nice to advertise that normal accelerated pairings were going to be used.

I would understand that cheer in a zonal, but isn't it strange in a tourney where James is already a favorite (getting 2305 soon)? Okay maybe you are a personal friend, Thunderspirit, so in that sense it makes perfect sense ...

Who am I to judge, anyhow? :uhoh:

Jesper, James is one of my closest friends, so I cheer him regardless of what he plays.

I'm not a fan at all of accelerated pairings, though with 80 players an argument could be made for them. It wouldn't have affected my entry as I just happened to be in Melbourne anyway.

I agree with Garvin that it would have been nice to know. One player did complain that he wouldn't not have played if he knew the pairings were accelerated.

It's the round two pairings, I've never understood. Loose round one and you still can play someone on a one point in round two?

As for agreeing with Garvin... I might damage my image if I agree with him too often...;)

I'm not a fan at all of accelerated pairings, though with 80 players an argument could be made for them. It wouldn't have affected my entry as I just happened to be in Melbourne anyway. It is more to do with the rating difference of all the pairings in the first round that is the issue. There could be 80 players, but the average rating difference of each pairing is 300 or so, then the field should get sorted in some meaningful fashion.

I agree with Garvin that it would have been nice to know. One player did complain that he wouldn't not have played if he knew the pairings were accelerated. With a website and tournament flyer full of information, it would have been very easy just to put something in the entry forms that states that accelerated pairings may be used (insert circumstances here).
The point acceleration should be stopped is when all players from the bottom half are no longer on 100%, not just stopped after some defined round number.

It's the round two pairings, I've never understood. Loose round one and you still can play someone on a one point in round two? I take it you are describing where a player from the top half loses their first round game, then plays someone from the bottom half who won their first round game.
The purpose of this is to try and get rid of all players from the bottom half on 100% before the acceleration comes off. Otherwise the tournament will have a bottom half player on board one when the acceleration stops (or is that the music stops :P)

As for agreeing with Garvin... I might damage my image if I agree with him too often...;)I think you meant to say, reputation, not image ;). As for the general sentiment, I hear that quite often

I turned up this morning to say hello to a few people and it was great to see such a good atmosphere.

Lots of parents makes for company while the games are in progress, and there's always a few juniors finishing early who don't mind me sticking my big nose into their post game analysis.

My only disappointments were Jason Tang not playing the Alekhine-Chatard attack against Dyment, though maybe he's not quite as reckless as I am; and the amount of junior players who seem to be using solid systems like the Hedgehog, or the Catalan, or the Torre or suchlike, and growing old before their time

The Ollie Xue pairing in round 2 is an interesting case study for problems with accelerated pairings.

In round 1 the top "half" of the draw comprised 19 pairings and the bottom "half" of the draw 20 pairings (not counting the zero-point bye).

One of the 20 pairings in the bottom "half" was drawn leaving 19 bottom-half first round winners.

Normally they would have played the 19 top-half non-winners, but because there was an odd number of top-half winners, this created a downfloat in the latter grouping (Isaac Ng).

The downfloater was paired against a top-half non-winner, leaving 18 top-half non-winners, which was one less than the number of bottom-half winners, meaning a bottom-half winner had to float down. And because there was only one round 1 draw, colours resulted in the player who had scored an upset win in round 1 getting to play a player who was much lower rated and on a lower score.

As far as I can tell the round 2 draw is correct. The Xue downfloat problem could, however, have been easily avoided in this instance by making the top half-bottom half pairing split in the first round 20-19 instead of 19-20. Not only would that have ensured sufficient top-half non-winners to pair the bottom-half winners against, but most likely in this case it would have resulted in a 20-0 result for the top "quarter" and hence no downfloater from that section.

However the real mistake comes in round 3 when the acceleration is prematurely removed while there are still two bottom-half players (Xue and Addamo) remaining on 100%. Removing acceleration after a specified number of rounds no matter what is an incorrect policy except if there are only two rounds remaining at that stage.

It is correct and important to continue acceleration until all bottom half players have dropped at least half a point, and then remove it, or remove it with two rounds to go if that comes first. The reason for this is that a purpose of acceleration is to cull the 100% score group as fast as possible and another purpose is to avoid mismatches, but allowing bottom-half 100%ers to play top-half 100%ers in round three furthers neither of these objectives.

I sometimes think there should be a licence system for running accelerated swisses in this country.

Feel free to answer some or all of the pairing questions that have been raised Publicist.

Hahaha. In the other place there is a current post from Il cavaliere inesistente re the weekly Box Hill newsletter:

I can hardly wait for the next issue. The Tasmanian tiger may not like the arbiter's view on acceleration

"Tiger", sheesh, how cliched. Thanks for making it Tasmanian rather than Siberian, but how about something that actually still exists? [pun intended]

Anyway the current issue contained only the following enlightenment:

There were no mayor[sic] hassles, Some grumpiness about the acceleration of the draw but that was mainly from the usual suspects from interstate. There were some odd dicisions[sic] by Swiss perfect but I managed to repeat my usual excuse for not interfering that Swiss Perfect is equally unfair to everyone.

Of course, using Swiss Perfect to accelerate draws is itself an odd decision for anyone familiar with its defects in that department.

But if we are going to get a more comprehensive exegesis in the next issue it is I who can hardly wait. Provided that it takes great care not to misrepresent my published views, of course.

Well I have now seen the article (http://www.boxhillchess.org.au/e2010/news/201001.pdf) (PDF LINK) I was supposed to be trembling in my boots about.

Surprisingly I find that one of its main arguments is this:

The argument that you play junk round one in round 3 is just nonsense Look at round 3 of our CSS after 2 rounds of acceleration
1 Dragicevic,v Ng,I 2 Tang,v Dyment, 3 Addamo, v Schön, 4 Jager, v Xue, 5 Illingw v Hacche, 6 Ng,J v Morris, 7 Wallis, v Yu,Allen 8 Yu,Alec v Matheson

Now the first sentence there is exactly what I have tried to tell MOZ (as a general mathematical principle) for years. He countered by trying to use this tournament as evidence otherwise, and I pointed out that too many of the round 1 pairings were irregular for his example to fly, even as a single counter-example. As a whole, the article seems more directed towards MOZ's views on normal acceleration than mine.

However, I'll give MOZ a biiiiiig helping hand with that here: as an argument for round 3 being non-junk, Publicist's examples are in fact invalid for two reasons.

The first is that they focus on the leading pairings rather than considering the whole field. After two rounds of acceleration, it is normal that the 2/2 top-half scoregroup will be thinned down to a handful of players most likely all from the top 1/8th of the draw and these will have very close round 3 contests. Because acceleration removes players from the 2 point scoregroup rapidly (and also from the zero scoregroup) there is frequently greater clustering in the other scoregroups (.5, 1.5 and especially 1). Therefore it is through the middle of the draw, not at the very top of it, that you would look at an Accelerated Swiss to see if the round 3 mismatches were severe.

At least in a correctly run accelerated swiss, that is. The article goes on to note:

The computer adding further unpredictability by floating Hacche down instead of Xue to Hacche’s great annoyance

Hacche had every right to be annoyed. Not because he was downfloated due to colour (or whatever) by the computer but because he was downfloated and a bottom-halfer on 100% was left paired against the 100% scoregroup, which as I have pointed out is incorrect. Furthermore, had the top-half group at the start of the event not been too small, it is less likely Xue would have reached 2/2 in the first place.

For what it's worth, the ACF ratings differences on the top eight boards for the CSS were 478, 125, 824, 1216 (sheesh), 219, 927, 882, 837. Five of the top eight boards had mismatches of 800 points or greater. Two of these were directly caused by incorrect pairing procedure; some of the others may just have been bad luck. "Nothing like round one is it" the author asks? Well, actually, most of those boards look a heck of a lot like an unaccelerated round 1 in the same sort of strength field to me, where the differences would have been around 900-1000 points. So that's the second reason: while it is claimed that the examples given show a non-junky round 3, they are actually very patchy on that score.

So far from me being ruffled by this article, the accelerophobes and acceleration-addicts (who will even settle for black-market substitutes) are welcome to continue arguing their respective positions incompetently and I will happily dispose of either. :D

The author concludes:

It is acceleration that adds a little magic.

Indeed, but you need to know your spells, or they have unintended consequences.

Once again I quote from the First Edition (as distinct from the somewhat non-kosher Second and later editions) of The Chess Organiser's Handbook by IA Stewart Reuben:

There are many variations on this basic system. One of its problems is that, once controllers have grasped the basic principle, they often branch off into their own ideas, without grasping the finer points.

Whoever wrote the acceleration module for SP did not grasp the finer points and that is why acceleration-by-SP should simply not be used, and tournament controllers should not use acceleration at all unless they understand the system, in particular that you do not remove acceleration while there are bottom-halfers still on 100%.
