Launceston Chess Club is trialling a change of night and venue.

Starting on October 14 the Club will meet each Wednesday at 7.00pm in Launceston's CBD at Pilgrim Uniting Church, 34-36 Paterson St (you can't miss it: the block between Charles and St John Streets, opposite the Myer carpark, entrance between the two churches).

In the meantime (until Christmas?) the Club will also continue to meet on Fridays at the old venue (see contact info below for address)

Door fees: Adults $3.00, Students & Juniors $2.00, Members free

Contact information: http://www.chesstasmania.org.au/clubs/launceston.html

I'm reliably advised that the Club will make the Wednesday shift permanent.

I haven't been along for a while but since I paid my sub - amazing value at only $50.00 per annum for (fully waged) adults - I'd better start getting my money's worth!

Top-level play at the Club in 2010 looks like it will be more competitive than in recent years with five players - Ramin Rezaie, Michael Lucht, Marcus Bretag, Lawrence Bretag and myself - all (more or less) 1600+ in strength which is not bad for Tasmania

New enquiries most welcome!

The Launceston Club is closed for 2009.

Happy Christmas to all

The Launceston Club is open for the 2010 season (old news but someone had to break it).

Michael Lucht tells me we are having a Club championship this year (for a change). My insane workload (at work - where else?) eases up in May so I'm keen to play if a few players over 1500 enter.

I'm told that unfortunately the Club isn't running another Launceston Cup event in January/February. However it will be hosting the Tasmanian Championships in March.

I'm interested in trying to run the 2011 Launceston Cup some time in the last four months of the year - either by myself or with LCC/TCF support.

Clearly this would need to avoid clashes or near clashes with the Burnie Shines and/or Hobart Weekender.

At this stage mid to late November might be 'the go' (as they say in this part of the world). Watch this space!

Hi everyone,

Can someone tell me what the entry fee for the Tas champs is and whether someone can provide me with some accommodation if I come and play?

This year the club is meeting at Launceston College on Friday nights. Ring a club official for further details (see TCA site).

Correction to earlier post: This year the club is meeting at Launceston College on Wednesday nights and at the 'old' venue at 8 High St on Friday nights.

Arriving around 7.00pm should be OK but if you plan to go on Wednesday you should ring a club official for further details - not least negotiating your way through the labyrinthine LC to the actual playing room (see TCA site).

In latest news:

The Wednesday meetings have discontinued.

The meetings at 7pm at 8 High St on Friday nights are still on.

At the Tasmanian Championships in March I suggested that the Launceston Cup could be rescheduled to run in September but at this stage I have to say this looks problematic. It's probably best to assume that there will only be four Grand Prix events in Tassie this year.

Further to my idea of running the Launceston Cup later on in the year, I haven't detected a sufficient level of local support so I've decided not to pursue the idea any further.

The Club has started another season with a few hardy stalwarts. (The season works on a financial year basis which addled my Kiwi brain at first, but I suppose it makes the Treasurer's job easier).

The current season's fees are $10.00 per year with a $2.00 door fee with plans to break the mild addiction to endless friendly games and run organised (rated?) events on Clubnight in the near future.

I recently re-floated the idea of running the Launceston Cup in the September school holidays but there seem to be concerns about insurance or something (I thought TCA covered this, but never mind). One or two other expressed support though; so although it's probably too late for the GP circuit, something may happen?!

Any event approved by the TCA to be run on its behalf is covered under TCA insurance.

And while you are in Launceston don't neglect some or all the fantastic Tamar River Cruises.
Amazing views, excellent service, relaxed atmosphere!
You guys should seriously think of organising a cruise chess tournament there.

Thanks for the clarification Kevin.

Club officials have since been reminded of this, so the ball is in their court re any September event.

It's almost certainly too late to run a weekender on the GP circuit and attendance at open events in Tassie has been way down, so a one-day rapid event might make the best sense.

Update: The Club has just let me know it agrees to let me organise an event - but its now too late for the September holidays plus it would be too close to the Tassie Junior in any case. Maybe next year folks?

Happy New Year folks!

Former Lunceston CC Club Secretary Michael Lucht has emigrated to SE Asia, so I'm not sure what is happening. Will up-date as soon as I hear something.

News has belatedly reached me that the 2011 Launceston Club Champs had the following results:

7/7 Michael Lucht 1656
6 Mike Baldini 1576
4 Colin Anker
3.5 Dallas Fry 1358
3 Leo Minol 1116
2 Hans Buhler
2 George Hambly
.5 Jason Smith

(Smith was recorded in the results as a finisher but actually played only two or three games and forfeited the rest.)
