The Ranges Chess Club web site (see my signature) is now taking online entries for the Summer Sizzler - and we already have our first entrant (Luke Williams).

Payment is not required until before round 1 on the day, but please register to make it a smooth start to the day (and so we know we can fit you all in!).

Thank you to those already registered - this will be very helpful for starting the event on time. I will publish a list of entries when it gets to 20 or so.

I have revised the start times (added 30 mins) for rounds 3 and 6 following advice, to give a little longer between those rounds. See attached revised flyer.

Hi Bloke - the brochure tells all and includes a Melway reference (maybe no use to someone who lives in Coffs?) - it is about 50m from Upwey station) on the Belgrave line. The club site also shows a map of the club site (that is where we are playing).

I am planning on chalk directions on the footpath on the day so no-one gets lost.:), well no excuses anyway

I don't know your circumstances, but if you are retired, then hit the road for 2 months and also go back home via Ballarat (March), Canberra (easter) and Sydney (week after Canberra). Otherwise, a damn long way to come - but we will roll out the welcome mat if you get here!!!. But do you call yourself a real chess tourist or not? Are you a KING among men or a mere PAWN??:D

We have less than 10 entries at this stage (the event is still a way off) - and lost you are the highest rated so far! I will publish a list when we get to 20 entries.

I am expecting most of the experienced and up and coming juniors from the Ranges club to go into the event, but am also realistic that a lot of people are not thinking too much about next year's chess right now, and so am expecting more activity/entries in the New Year - depending on how much of a chess fix you need.:D

Oh and BLOKE, I was toying with the idea of free or reduced entry to any player that can prove they live more than X kms from Upwey.. no idea what X could be though - 200kms?? Just a thought...

Just in case some do not know how to find Upwey, it is on the Belgrave line, in the lower Dandenong ranges, so it can feel like a holiday destination for those from more suburban vistas. Upwey is about 30 minutes from Canterbury station, for those with a Box Hill locale. There is a 693 bus from Oakleigh station (travels all the length of Ferntree Gully Road) as an option as well, for those coming from the south perhaps. The club is very close to the station, but I will be doing some chalk on the footpath for the first day seekers.

If I really wanted to, I could probably even find a picture of the place from street view.
but I will be doing some chalk on the footpath for the first day seekers.Just a few well place signs between the station and the venue is more than sufficient :)

As a small enticement, and to streamline entry and payment on the first day, if you enter and pay for the Summer Sizzler by the 1st February, your name will go into a draw for movie tickets (one name per entry). How many tickets and how many draws is still to be determined - it depends on entries received, but at least one double adult pass set of tickets.

Entry and payment details (netbank transfer) are now on the Ranges site (www.rangeschessclub.com.au). I will send you a confirming email once you have paid. For those already registered, I will send out a reminder email re early payment.

Thanks Jean and good to know it went smoothly. When the bank account does an update I will send you a confirmation re payment.

GOOD NEWS - Northern Star Chess (www.NorthernStarChess.com) is sponsoring some movie tickets, so we will be offering a few draws for a chance to win for the early bird entrants.

Currently 34 entrants and still more are expected. Due to the forecasted fine weather, we are going to move the analysis room to the analysis garden - ie outdoors under a shady tree. This will keep the interior noise down and bring chess to the (maybe) passing masses. The raffle is growing and the new guessing competition will add to the fun! Not too late to sign on. How can I get in touch with JAK to remind him of his promise to attend??

Sorry for the dodgy format.

Well 45 players turned up for the first day of the first-ever Ranges weekender! This was great result and showed strong backing from the local (and not so local) chess players. The first round had a clock setup glitch that seemed to affect several games, but this was smoothly sorted by the arbiter (NY Wong). No other admin related issues of note to report - and everyone seemed to be having a relaxing time of it. However some game results were unexpected, games scores to follow in a later post.

Current cross table and provisional round 4 pairing follow:

Guy won with 5.5/6
Cark Gorka and David Flude came equal second with 5/6.
There were a whole bunch of juniors who won prizes - there were some very impressive performances - but I'll leave that out as I'm sure to forget someone if I try to name them all.
Many thanks to Ranges CC for an enjoyable, very successful first weekender.

Hi All. Thank you to the Ranges committee and members, volunteers, sponsors and the players and parents/siblings that turned out for the Ranges inaugural weekender. Final cross table is below, highlighting the winners (4 open winners, 6 junior-only winners). All game scores will be available eventually on the Ranges site - I will post when it is available. Thank you to NY Wong for doing this - this was not expected but very welcome. Also, thank you to those that filled out the post-event survey - this will be helpful for future events.

Thanks Carl for those kind words and the few pics. Yes our club must have the only internal mural in Melbourne I would guess! We at Ranges were pretty chuffed (no Puffing Billy pun intended) at the turn out and how everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. 21 juniors battled against 22 adults and I would say the honours were shared on that score. Being our first weekender we were a bit apprehensive about the whole process but it seemed to go well.

The game scores from rounds 1-5 will be on our site soon – I will email all players when it is available, and ask players to submit their round 6 game, as many took away their last round with them.

We are looking forward to our next weekender in Spring, and hope for new record numbers!!

Just to recap, the event attracted 43 entries - adults and juniors - some even coming from across the other side of Melbourne to enjoy a sunny two days and friendly atmosphere.

We are especially grateful to NY Wong for the excellent job he did in guiding the competition with clear, calm and fair adjudication. Thank you, NY!

To the winners, our Congratulations - Guy West 1st place on 5.5, It took Carl Gorka to hold Guy to a draw in the exciting final round. Carl tied with David Flude on 5. David also had an excellent tournament.

Among the juniors Nathan Hibberd performed well above his rating, taking the Under 1600 prize with a score of 4.5. The same applies to Joseph Wong and Jamie Yung who shared the U1400 1st and 2nd place on 4 points. Another very promising junior is Ari Dale whose score of 4 gained him the U1100 prize with Cameron Yung coming 2nd on 3.5. Also on 3.5 was the U800 1st prize winner, Karl Zelesco, and Jack Puccini was 2nd on 3.

We look forward to the Ranges Spring Break Weekender in September, and hope you will all come back for more mountain hospitality!
