We are talking Canterbury leafy near Eastern suburb 5 or 6 KM east of Melbourne here. But if you are from Sydney a half point bye will be available

Entries are coming in already.

Work is proceeding and players can be assured that we will avoid a conflict with the tournament at the Melbourne Chess Club over Cup weekend. Details of how we avoid the conflict will be posted next week.

We want our tournament to succeed and we want the Melbourne Chess Club tournament to succeed big time.

The tournament organizer has informed me that players in the Canterbury Open who also wish to play in the Melbourne Chess Club Cup Weekend Tournament, will be able to re-arrange their last round game between Sunday October 25 and Friday November 6 with their opponents agreement and the tournament organizerís approval

Hey David, shall I introduce the Latvian Gambit in this tournament???

If you want to throw points away go for it.

You would be better playing the following line of the Spanish.

1.e4 e5
2.Nf3 Nc6
3.Bb5 f5 it is still high risk but has been played by grandmasters.

hehehe anyway back to chess... I have to play Leon Kempen on Friday!

He plays the "Black lion" defence. It is as tricky as a barrel load of monkeys and he knows the theory.

1.e4 d6
2.d4 Nf6
3.Nc3 Nb8d7 and e5 follows shortly afterwards.

It can be avoided as follows.

1.e4 d6
2.Nc3 but you must be prepared to play against the Pirc or Modern

only problem is that I don't play 1.e4 myself! so it doesn't really help but thanks anyway :)
