Things are shaping up well. Indications thus far are that we will have a field of 30+ players. Needing a few more New South Welshfolk to take on the ACT contingent of raiders :)

Either the Goldfields or Central are good motels. The Millthorpe Motel and Dalebrook of Carcoar are new to us and as yet untested, but they certainly look like nice places. The Exchange Hotel has proven very popular in past years and should continue to do so.

http://blayneychessclub.com/html/accommodation.html for info on how to contact them.

How much time do you think driving takes from North Sydney to Blaney? Is it possible to come at 10 am just before the first round start? Thanks.

Travel time would be somewhere between 3.5 and 4 hrs.

So long as you definitely enter, arriving just before 10 am would be fine. Note, in the previous two years, the latest we have started is 10.01 am! So don't be surprised if your clock is running if you are running late :)

Sign up at the playing venue from 8:30 am to 9:30am will suffice, otherwise send me an email with your details and that will allow you to plan your arrival for 9:30am for a 10:00am start.

Just a quick update.

Currently 37 players have indicated that they are coming.

Proposed prizemoney is at http://www.blayneychessclub.com/html/prizemoney.html

Hopefully with more entries to come, more prizemoney to the winners!

If it is possible, could we have a list of entrants? Thank you

Phil Bourke
04-09-2009, 08:59 PM
Not at this point. Indicated intentions often don't equate to being there on the day. :)

If I were to make a list of those that are definitely playing, I would only have a list of 20 or so.

Though in previous years, the numbers often match up, the composition of the field may alter dramatically in that last hour beforehand.

Given that I haven't included many of the usual suspects, the number should remain around the same, even if the composition changes a little.

The response has been phenomenal. Currently have 46 players on the list and fingers crossed that it remains at around that number or increases slightly.

Looking forward to the weekend.

This tournament sounds really good, but it is too far away. Why can't they organise more tournaments like this closer to Sydney. If you know of any tournaments in Sydney of a similiar format to this please tell me.

The Bennett

I am also fairly certain that Nick Beare and Glenn Ingham are intending to play in this tournament, so that makes an extra 2 people if you haven't already added them

Phil Bourke

Thanks, that makes 47! I knew about Glenn but not Nick. :)

Tournaments like Blayney are not possible in Sydney because part of the appeal is going to a town that you have not been to before and seeing the sights and meeting different people.

aransandraseg
09-09-2009, 09:26 PM
What if you really don't have the time to go there. C'mon you have to organise one of these tournaments in Sydney.:)

Phil Bourke
10-09-2009, 03:31 PM
Back to the point time :)

Some more entries recieved, two definites, one if other matters don't interfere, that makes a field of 49 fairly solid candidates!

I would guess that we may end up with a field of around 45 unless you too get organised rapidly and make your way to Blayney this weekend. :)

I have even started to try and sweet talk the wife into playing if the field is stuck on 49! The chances of that happening equate to me winning the Blayney Open! Fat and slim! :)

For the uninitiated, there is public transport all the way to Blayney, stops about 100 metres away from accommodation at $30 per night, and only a further 200 metre walk to the playing venue. Can't do much better than that for you.

14-09-2009, 09:21 AM
A quick summary, Emma Guo won the Open, Matthew Bennett won the Major (U1600), Michael Kethro, Col Parsons, Greg Wilson, Ramon Aich, and Erick McPherson were equal first in the Minor (U1300). Seven equal 2nds in the Open! It was a tight competition, I think there wasn't a round where one of the top seeds wasn't upset by a bad result!

Absolutely tickled pink with the outcome, 47 players, very competitive field, and apart from the early hiccup, not a problem anywhere else. Arthur Huynh was an excellent arbiter, the team from ACTJCL were a phenomenal help during the weekend, my own family were just brilliant help leading up to and during the tournament, and nary a cross word from any competitor, I think we may do it again next year :)

Here is the crosstable for you viewing pleasure.

Note, there was a mistake in Rd 1, a player was left in that should have been removed, I have edited his name for reasons of not embarrasing him with our mistake. Those there and in possession of the full files will have that info if it is absolutely necessary :)

hehe remind me to NOT play like that again. A decent game against Vladimir in the first, win in the second, and a win over a certain 2000, followed by three losses.

And no worries Bennett, I'll get my revenge in the ACT Juniors... Congratz though.

And thanks organisers! You guys are legends (even though one believed I was under 16 :P :) )

A couple of details that aren't on the crosstable.

We held a donation appeal for the SIO fund and raised $100 to keep a great event on the chess calendar. Thanks to the generosity of the those that contributed.

We had a new sponsor this year, who provided a voucher for accommodation to the value of $200. The best option we could come up with was to put on a Player's Player Prize, which was voted for by all the competitors. It was basically for any player that was felt to have contributed to the tournament with their presence either with their fighting spirit, or had made the occasion more memorable with their presence. The winner was Alex Momot. A chess legend among tournament goers who are continually amazed at how competitive he is given that he is blind, and getting into his 7th decade! I was told by my wife who counted the votes that Alex was a very popular winner, receiving twice the votes of any other nominated player.

Alex can either take a holiday in Carcoar during the next 12 months, or use it for accommodation at next year's Blayney Open.

Great result for Emma. One of those tournaments where the winner doesn't play the top seeds because the top seeds are too busy losing! Thus, in a tournament with two 2200+s and three 2000+s, a performance rating of 2074 wins the tournament by a whole point.

Congrats on a solid tourn, Phil. Genuinely sorry I couldn't make it. Genuinely going to try for next year.

Great result for Emma. One of those tournaments where the winner doesn't play the top seeds because the top seeds are too busy losing! Thus, in a tournament with two 2200+s and three 2000+s, a performance rating of 2074 wins the tournament by a whole point.

There was only 1 2200+. But yeah, go Emma!

Myself, I got 2/6. Beat an FM though!

It's always nice to donate a few rating points to a needy cause. :)

I don't know why us oldies don't do this more often. :)

Yes Brian, why didn't you just take my bishop and so I would have offered you a draw, you would have taken it, and I would have walked home with 150 bucks more?

Thanks Phil for organizing this event. I am hoping we will come next year. We have to get the first prize, don't we.:)

Thanks Vlad and Jerry, you will be most welcome next year.

Edit- Perhaps I should also say that I took the Phil here to be plural :) There are many people who all do a fair bit to make this event happen, and it should include Arthur Hunyh who did an excellent job with the arbiting.

Congratulations to Emma, commiserations to drug. Sounds like it was a smoothly run tournamant so congrats to Phil and his team as well.
