26...Qa5 followed by ...Rc8+ appears to be strong for black (it either wins Q for R+B with a very strong position or else wins a piece).

Smerdon wins 4-2 (+2=4-0). Good effort.

Game 6

Smerdon - Wang. A Closed Tarrasch, but not one of the lines of it that I've studied to move twenty-something. Early in the game I liked white, but does g4 actually slow white's attack rather than accelerate it? Black then had what I thought was a pretty promising q-side buildup (though whether it goes anywhere or not is another question) but unfortunately for him on 28 he played Nxc3??. It looks like the piece sacrifice is temporary but it isn't; it is a miscalculation and Smerdon made it permanent (33.Rc3!) and after that the game was over.

Nice tactics, that bishop on d3 was hanging for an age.

I can only guess, but looks like Puchen (when playing 28...Nxc3) forgot that his queen no longer protects the rook on a7. As a result he could not recapture e6 pawn with f7 pawn (after David's 32.fe6+) as it loses to 33.Qf7+ (33...Be7 34.Bg6, 33...Kd8 34.Qxa7).
After 32...Kxe6 white can always play Bf5+ (and does not need to do it immediately, thus allowing for niceties like Rc3).

The loose rook on a7 theory sounds very plausible Igor.

Even though it turned out to be a blunder I thought 28...Nxc3 was an impressively imaginative attempt to mix it up, as Black of course had to win Game 6 to tie the match.

The last two games were especially hard fought and were great to watch. Congrats to both players

I had the pleasure of hanging out with David during is recent tournament the Waikato Open which started on friday and finished on sunday the9th of august.

He duely won the event with 5.5/6. He had some very nice Smashes. A beautiful little win against Spain. And destroyed Mike Steadmans Alekine.

He drew with garbett. I played him in the last round and it was a very interresting game. I was probably completely winning on move 16 instead of .Rxc3 Nxg6 after Qxg6 Rxc3 is just carnage fritz giving close to plus +3. But the game went on and it was very exciting...

Here is the game....

If somone can edit my post and put into the game replayer. Cause im too retarded to do it!.[done - mod]

Any thoughts on my game would be helpful. He said he didnt no what to do after rc8. and he said he didnt like is b4 move as his strucutre became weaker. He thought my nce7 was very good and didnt c it. Still towards the end there is alot of crazy vairations...

I thought i had him.. hahaha. Would of won outright 2.
