Is the decision about forfeight time final? Several players are known to be coming late quite often...

Hi Michael

Unfortunately the forfeit time will be enforced. It is a FIDE requirement, so our hands are tied on this one....

Personally (and Im speaking for myself here, not the MCC), its not something that Ive ever really cared much about - I was always happy if my opponent turned up 40 minutes late because they had 40 minutes less thinking time, and thus I had an easier game....

But, a lot changes after 10 years out of the game and forfeit times are obviously an issue important to many people in 2009, including FIDE... Therefore we will have to enforce it. Im curious to see what others think about this issue actually...

Starting with this tournament.
Can we please have a MCC concrete bye policy and stick to it?
Are byes receiving?
0 points?
0.5 points?
1.0 point?
I believe that the current Club's policy in regards to byes is either non existant or varies from the absurd to ridiculous.
It's time to do something about it!

I strongly believe that for a tournament with FIDE time restrictions implemented, the Melbourne Chess Club should readjust the starting time from 7:00 pm to 7:30 pm to accommodate members who finish work late!

Hi everyone

For the MCC Open, the following rules will apply regarding byes:

1. Half point byes will be given for players who can not play in a particular round, eg. Player A has a prior commitment in round 3, and requests a bye for that round. He will be given half a point for that game.

2. Full point byes will only be given to players who have "earnt" the bye by being the lowest seeded player on the lowest score, eg. There are 83 players in the field (an odd number) and of those players, there are 6 on 0/4, the seeding numbers of those 6 being 65, 67, 68, 70, 72 and 73, then Player 73 will receive a full point bye - because he is available to play but unfortunately is the lowest seeded player on the lowest score.

Hopefully this should make the issue clear.

What about those who rely on public transport to get home...would not they prefer earlier start? :)

It won't hurt their arses to use public transport half a bloody hour later!

a) will the games finish by 11? with the late start?
and b) if games finish late...how to start work early next day?

I think 7 pm starting time reflects wishes of majority of the participants. However, may be we can put it to a vote :)

Waking up the usual time and getting there might be an idea. I play at BHCC where they start at 7.45 pm; I don't have any problems waking up and going to work next day!

Hi Grant,

First of all, I want to congratulate you and the MCC Committee on the tremendous revitalisation of this most famous of Australian chess clubs. To me, this is a real highlight in Victorian chess this year.

I don't often post on anything but my own FIDE threads these days, but there were a few things on this thread in particular I thought I should point out:

From post #1:
Forfeit time is 30 minutes after game begins. I suspect this will become the standard in many Australian tournaments, as a lot of people want to allow some leeway but think an hour is too long to wait around. But from post #3:
It is a FIDE requirement, so our hands are tied on this one.... This is incorrect. What has changed is that the default time for forfeit is now 0 minutes instead of 60 minutes. Any organiser of FIDE-rated events is free to advertise any forfeit time between 0 and 60 minutes (and of course, if there is any change in the forfeit time before the event starts, all reasonable efforts should be made to contact potential participants).

From post #7:
Half point byes will be given for players who can not play in a particular round, eg. Player A has a prior commitment in round 3, and requests a bye for that round. He will be given half a point for that game. If you are going to state this officially, you need to absolutely qualify the conditions, as Bill has pointed out. Also, it's the 21st century, and while the English language is still lacking a non-gender-specific third-person pronoun, using "he" would be much better replaced by "that player", "this player" and so on, as you're unintentionally offending at least half of the human population.

As per our email exchange a few weeks ago - for the benefit of anyone reading this thread - the finishing date of October 26 means that it will just miss the cut-off for FIDE's November list, and will therefore be rated on FIDE's January 2010 list.

Kind Regards,
Greg

I really understand where you are coming from and I agree with those that work until 6 or later
I would just like to point out that it is way late for juniors
I stopped James attending Box Hill because of the late hour...had to laugh at the seniors waiting for the juniors to fall asleep
James does not play Monday nights because it is too late...VCE coming up

Greg,

Thanks for the clarification on the forfeit time issues. And apologies to anyone who was offended by my use of the word "he" instead of "that player". Thankyou also for the support you have given the MCC.

RE. Half point byes

There will be no half point byes allowed in rounds 8 and 9 in this event. I realize that we have allowed them previously, but for the sake of consistency and fairness, the MCC Tournament Sub-Committee have decided to stop awarding them in rounds 8 and 9 of nine round events from now on. People can still request a bye in rounds 8 and 9, but they wont get a half point for it.
This will be the case for MCC tournaments from here on in. Looking back, we probably shouldve had a policy on this earlier.

RE. Start times (Michael, JAK, Mischa etc)

I find the debate between 7pm and 7.30pm start times interesting - for one reason above all: that I dont believe that it can ever be solved. I can see (and sympathizse with) the arguments from both sides of the fence. Inevitibly, regardless of which starting time is chosen, someone is going to be put off by it. There is no right or wrong answer to this. The tournament sub-committee discussed whether the start time should be 7 or 7.30 earlier in the year and 7pm was decided. We have advertised the MCC Open to start at 7pm and therefore we will stick to our word on it. Id be more than happy for MCC members to vote on the issue, however not that many of them have mentioned it to me. If both players agree, I cant see any reason why they cant start their game at 7.30pm anyway - its no different to a postponement really. Perhaps we need a system whereby odd numbered rounds start at 7pm and even numbered at 7.30pm??? Im open to any ideas on this one. But the rounds of the MCC Open this year will start at 7pm.

Players:

Ive confirmed the IM Mirko Rujevic will be playing, as will Victor Kildisas - welcome back to MCC Victor! Lots of other players are also confirmed but I dont have the names at hand.

JAK, its simple as that..tournaments should be run under conditions that majority of players find best. If you are the only one who wants to start at 7.30 ..then unfortunately count you out :(. You will be missed though. If many people want to start 7.30 fair enough....count out those who do not want to start past 7 pm.

Personally, i would prefer to play 60 min +30 secs as opposed to 90 min. but as few people agree with me on this one, there is not much i can do but to play 90+30 or not.

Misha, the problem with +30 is - nobody can guarantee games to finish at certain time :(. This is where I have the same concern as you and James. I would like to have earlier finish...or at least be assured that the games will not finish too late.

Hello everyone,

The delays in the publication of results lies with me, I have had a few things to do of late above and beyond what might be regularly happening for me, so hopefully there will not be a repeat of this delay.

So on to the results of play on Monday 31st August

These are the pairings that were played on the given evening; I phrase this in this matter, as it is hoped that the current field might be expanded; this is also the reason why I will delay for a couple of days more before publishing the pairings

Round 1 results

We have also have the following two players who are yet to be paired for Round 1; if we receive no further entries, they will be paired together for Round 1.

Mirko Rujevic 2223 [0]
Andrew Louis 1354 [0]

If anyone reading this has a wish to enter the tournament and play a round 1 game, I would urge them to contact either myself on 0408 150196
or Grant Szuveges on 0401 925075 as soon as possible. That way the round 2 pairings can be created with them amongst the participants.

Hope to hear from some of you soon,
