I couldn't find a thread for it, but was wandering who was going, if anyone is? :)

Nicholas D-C

I'm pretty sure most of the usual suspects will be there. It should probably be a close event this year:hmm:

How bout you guys?

Nicholas D-C
13-07-2009, 08:32 PM
Alex, why is this your only shot? Are you turning eighteen before the 2010 tournament? By the way, I'm around 1600 ACF, but my FIDE is 1869.

William Xu hasn't played any tournament chess that I know of since last year, so it would be surprising to see him defend his title after a year's hiatus

Lol yea thats true, but William just played in the Secondary Schools One Day for his school, I saw him there :owned: Nick why didn't you come along?...

It's a shame that NSW junior champions don't defend their titles anymore (William this is your chance to prove me wrong :) )

p.s. Check the hall of fame at nswjcl.org.au a couple of years ago ppl were defending their title again and again :P

Hi there!

Can't really remember the face, but I should come this Sunday :)
Im getting nerves already :P

I think I can remember the game though, I think I had a slight advanatge, but threw it away. Or am I thinking of another game? :)

Nicholas D-C

Nick why didn't you come along?...
I left for Queensland on that day, but I doubt that my school would have organized a team anyway. We never do that well. Our layout would have been me on Board 1: 946, Board 2: 406, Board 3: 370.

*gulp* lol.

hey trent! not to mention the city of sydney lightning :P:P:P

the ruans are playing in the U18, and i think william xu said in the sec schools one day that he might be going.

Nicholas D-C
14-07-2009, 08:51 AM
Newcastle and back everyday? Is it really worth all of that driving back and forth, leaving at 6 am and getting home at 6.30 or so?

Nicholas D-C
14-07-2009, 08:53 AM
Was last year's paired on ACF ratings? I can't really remember. Expect Anton Smirnov to be playing in the U18 as well, because he played in the City of Sydney U18 last year at the age of 7.

The ACF are more accurate though. The NSWJCL rating system is a bit weird, so they should probably just use ACF

To your post above, its pretty much the only way I can do it, Dad needs to come home everynight, so by Friday I'll probably fall to sleep at the board! :P

With ACF being more accurate, I would have to disagree to an extent, as most people say that juniors are always underrated. Yet I don't think my JCL rating is accurate either ;)

that must be a pain! :wall: well how about a hotel near by, or one of your city friends to accomodate you? And regarding the rating accuracies, i'd say the most inaccurate one is fide... lol ... I think they are using both ACF and JCL... not sure, you guys gotta confirm that with someone

Alexrules01

Don't think I have any city friends :P

I think it is using JCL rating. I saw last years results, and it had the Junior ratings next to everyones names. (or they were all REALLY low ACF ratings :P)

I think the two-year ban will be the end of Edward Naoumov's chess "career". Sean Gu is likely to win the Under 12's if he enters. I doubt that this year's under 18 will be won with a very high score. Most of the top players will be pretty well matched when they play each other so I think 7.5 might be the top score, but you never know with these events. @ Tan the Bdx Man: You must be pretty desperate to get that CCCM title.:D LOL!!! Tan's Account was just banned for wasting space! Thx for wasting my precious seconds reading your endless posts!

They would be top seeds supposing they both go and William Xu, Jeffrey Tse, Edwin Wu or Max Illingoworht don't go

Also Jack and Harry have said they're both going to U18 this year so i guess there wont be too many high rated people in U12 since there's already no Harry and Anton

Tan the Bdx Man
15-07-2009, 04:39 PM
So pretty much confirmed entry list so far U18:

Nicholas Dean Cowell
Jerry Xu
Peter Yang
Kevin Tan
Jack Ruan
Harry Ruan
Benjamin Encel
Alex Mehan
Bernard Chau
Adrian Chau

And prob many more since there are alot of active players nowdays

Also does anyone know if there's going to be a simul?

Nicholas D-C
15-07-2009, 05:10 PM
There is usually a simul. But it'll probably depend if Zong-Yuan Zhao is able to give one. I haven't actually had a look at the new ratings for a while, so I just tipped Adrian because he usually does pretty well anyway, no matter who is there.

Tan the Bdx Man
15-07-2009, 05:14 PM

Nicholas D-C

It's a shame that the simul always clashes with the lightning, because it's hard to concentrate on the simul games.

Tan the Bdx Man
15-07-2009, 05:24 PM
Yeah it does get distracting but thats the only way everything can be done on the same day. I suppose one could always move slowly or take some passes to keep playing after the blitz

http://www.youngchess.com/afispart.php?id=67&cid=225&op=sahistiVladimir, interesting link in your sig. Does it mean Anton has fourth hignest rating in the world for Under 9? Strange that Colombians are so good at such a young age! They don't usually feature among the top adult players.

Read my previous post carefully!:)

I believe all these Columbians have fake ratings. We met the #1 kid in the world youth almost 2 years ago. He had a rating of almost 2000 even then. Have a look at post #55 in the following thread:

http://www.chesschat.org/showthread.php?t=6401&page=4

Another thing is that he did not look like he was 6-year-old 2 years ago, more like 7-8 year old. It is a very common problem for contries like India, Columbia, etc.

Now if you look at the other Columbians (at the fide website) you will notice that they get their ratings from the same competition. More interestingly is that whenever they play they loose rating points. This loosing track continues for years, which is absolutely abnormal for kids.

Anyway, it is not Columbians one should worry about. It is very likely that neither of them will play in the world youth anyway.

The rating list contains only kids who played in the fide rated events. Kids from countries like Russia, China, Vietnam, etc. do not have opportunities until they get to about 2200 level.

For the benefit of those not involved in the tournament, after 4 rounds, John Papantoniou, Pasan Perrera and Sean Gu are leading the tournament on 3.5/4 with five rounds to play. Peng Yu Chen is leading the Under 18 with three games left to play. He has 5/6, but is only half-a-point clear of several players on 4.5. The tournament is still wide open, however, with another group of players on 4.

I thought seeing as I travelled 2 hours to play one game, we'd play to the end. Then this happened and i sat there thinking why didn't I take the draw. Unfortunately the next major tournament is not until October and the City of Sydney Championships. I think there is a Class 2 GP event in Blayney, but it'll be hard to get to. It's strange to think, If I had capatilized on my good position against Jack Ruan and won that game, I could've been fighting for first place on the last day. It's strange how things work out sometimes... Oh well, I'm satisfied to get 16th, after a bad tournament.

The playoff should be next month. Jerry, we should continue playing lightning between the rounds. Playing some fast and furious blitz is a great way to take the pressure off during a serious tournament!

going into the last round the tournament is still wide open, with 3 people on 6/8, and with a possibility of a six way tie for first.

well tan according to ian rogers a queen always beats 3 pieces in an endgame lol ...

That wasn't an endgame and it was rook and two pieces which were much stronger than the queen. Still don't know how to post game.

From the NSWJCL website.

This year's NSW Junior Championship (Under 18) produced a tie for first place after an exceptionally close tournament. Twelve-year-old Peng Yu Chen and 17-year-old Adrian Chau scored 7 points out of 9, half a point ahead of Jack Ruan. Five players finished another half point away.
A two-game playoff for the title was held the following day and was won 1.5-0.5 by Peng Yu. Congratulations to the new NSW Junior Champion!
In the Under 12 division, 11-year-old Shirley Gu was a clear winner on 9 points out of 10. Clarise Koh and Vincent Chen were equal second with 8 points.

Why are you always rebuking my comments. Far out. And why do you keep putting ...sigh... at the end of your messages. i mean it just gets annoying. IDK about you but I've only beaten two 900s so far (but quite a few 800s). I think Kevin Tan is a 900 so it is hard to beat him therefore in my terms it is a feat. I consider Anthony a player at around my level. I've had three draws with him in real competition.

Second of all I had assumed he had won. Beating Kevin Tan is an achievement.

Third of all, I remember Anthony telling me he kept drawing with high-rated players. I thought he won this game so I assumed that this was one of his better games.

Well Kev's 1000 for a start... and I think I've beaten a number of players at 900 JCL when I was 710. Check my 2008 spring 2 day record I'm pretty sure that was it... :P

First of all last season I was a 600 ( I know. I should be ashamed.) and now I am a 700 so 900s beware (that includes you and NDC). Second of all, Kevin maybe 1000 but he did get the brilliancy prize for something and the position came up in the magazine. I think that was pretty good so to beat a player of that calibre is good. I don't really have a third of all so I'm just going to laugh at you.
