Sorry, I will miss this one (mainly thanks to swine flu); hope it goes well and if anyone who does go could post the basic results here that would be great. If not I will get them from Tony Sturges who is going up; Janice and Milutin are also going.

The porcine virus got me too - still a bit headachey on Day 13. So I probably won't compete.

Good luck to all :P

Alastair came first with a picket fence (5/5) although Kevin Hendry gave him alot of trouble in the second round. Kevin (Hendry) and I got equal second on 4/5, we didn't play eachother. Vincent and Marcus came equal third with 3.5/5. Those two having drawn earlier on in the tournament. I think Marcus had a difficult game against David Hughes. The under 12 prize went to Mason Carter, Kimberley Tongue got the girls prize and Jesse also won a prize.

So the basic places went; 1st Alastair Dyer, 2-3rd Kevin Hendry, Lawrence Bretag, 4-5 Vincent Horton, Marcus Bretag.

Peter Lucas played, apparently he used to be rated quite high but has not played chess in a fair while thus is loosening the hinges with this rapid. Zen Zero and his son also played their first tournament and did well for relative to their lack of experience

Afterwards there was a coaching session. We played through a couple of Capablanca's games and got a good insight to how different players thought about positions.

Overall a very nice little tournament with a big thanks to Russell Horton for organising and running it    . Also a thanks and apologies to anyone that helped out that I may not have mentioned.

Thanks Kevin and Tony. I'm really looking forward to Launceston, I'll see if I can improve my position or atleast get to prove my play against some of Tazzies top.

Mid-year exams/reports will be over by november so I'll have heaps more time for practice so a watchout warning will have to be issued :P :P :P.

Peter Lucas is a very strong player at normal time controls and has been rated around 1900. He has a +3=3-2 career record against me. Apparently much less dangerous in rapids.

Yeah my game vs him was interesting. A pirc with opposite side castling pawn rushes either side where my attack broke through first so I got a two pawn advantage but got tricked by a simplification into a difficult rook ending where my king was all pinned down. Luckily for me he made just one mistake in the ending which I was able to capitalise on. I thought it was definitely my most difficult game in the tournament.
